ICE, The Latest Iteration of DOGE

If you recall, when Trump was first elected he unleashed his attack dog, Elon Musk, under something called the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk’s “employees” (how his illegal department could have employees when they weren’t part of the previous year’s budget is worth attention) who were very young “bro-types” who crashed any number of government offices, firing people willy-nilly, locking them out of their offices, and confiscating their computers or hard drives.

Gee, I wonder where they are now? I think I know. They are now employees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, aka ICE, who have used the exact same tactics with regard to what are being called immigration issues. They claim that they are targeting illegal immigrants, especially “the worst of the worst,” for deportation to cooperating government in other countries, nasty, hell-hole countries, that Trump previously referred to as “shit hole countries.” (I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists or make deals with shit hole countries?)

ICE, through mid-October, have arrested 210,000 people, including 3300 in my state, Illinois. The people here were as young as four-years old and as old as 75. (How does one get to become one of the “worst of the worst” at only four? Seems like it would take much longer.)

None of the targeted individuals were shown an arrest warrant and many were denied legal representation, some of the families of whom couldn’t even find out where they were. Many were apparently shuffled off to Texas or Missouri which would make ICE in violation of the Mann Act having taken people across state lines for immoral purposes.

These Smash and Grab agents, masked to prevent identification, (Where are all the MAGAts screaming that masks were the tool of the Devil?) seem to brook no accountability with their Dear Leaders shrugging of court orders as if they were litter.

So, how did they know whether the people they dearly wished to deport were undocumented? If you were whisked off the street, other than a driver’s license, would you have documentation of your status as a citizen? (One of those arrested pulled his passport out of his pocket and it was confiscated.) A sizable percentage of those arrested were released after a few days. So, how did they know to arrest those people in the first place? Apparently 60% of those arrested by mid-October in Illinois did not involve a criminal charge or conviction, so no court records could be used to identify them. Government statistics show, unequivocally, that undocumented aliens are less likely to commit crimes that citizens are, which makes this an “othering” effort, in spades (to classify people as “other than us” to discriminate against them wholesale). The administration, of course, is claiming that all of these “worst of the worst” are drug traffickers, gang members, and rapists (Oh, my!). What they actually have in common is … brown skin. (How dare they!)

If there is any motivation for these outrageous and illegal ICE activities, it appears to be to intimidate all other “brown-skinned” folks not already citizens to “self-deport” and discourage other brown-skinned folks from trying to get here to create a better life.

Here is a Google AI Summary/Overview regarding “What percent of ICE arrests are criminals?”

AI Overview
A significant majority of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees have no criminal conviction, with recent data from late 2025 showing roughly 73-74% lack any criminal record, and even more lack serious or violent offenses, with many having only traffic violations or pending minor charges, according to analyses from think tanks like the Cato Institute and Syracuse University (TRAC). This challenges claims that most detainees are serious criminals, as many have no prior criminal history, making them non-violent, non-criminal individuals caught in sweeps or facing immigration violations.

Texan Nat Guard Troops Sent to Chicago Labeled “Meal Team Six”

After Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (my spellchecker suggested “Hugest” as a replacement) berated all of the U.S. senior military officers for being fat, his Texas Thuggery assigned to slap Chicago around and teach it some respect showed up and, well, check out the photo … porkers all?

Not surprising from the land that invented the Chicken Fried Steak, but I’ll bet the SecWar’s face be burning right now, not so much that he didn’t have Texas Governor Greg Abbott replace all of the porkers with troops who met his standards.

(Source of Meal Team Six quip is the inestimable Jeff Tiedrich in his October 14th iteration of his blog Everyone is Entitled to My Own Opinion)

Another wag states “Operation Dessert Storm has officially begun. The 82nd Chairborn has boots on the ground, with the support of Marinara Corps, Meal Team Six, and the National Lard. Let us hope this doesn’t turn into another Battle of the Bulge. Semper Pie!” (Source: Sick Sad world, @YesYoureRacist)

I have been claiming that our sense of humor, dark though it be now, is a saving grace of our people.

Respect

I was brought up to “respect the office” of officials. I was also brought up with the understanding that respect is earned, trust is eared, and when it is lost it is very, very hard to recover.

I have used demeaning titles for our current president, e.g. the Orange Goon in the White House and Trumpenfűhrer, and I am distinguishing between the Office of the President of the United States and the current office holder. I sincerely hope that when Mafia Don is finally disposed of that such an office will still exist and it can be healed.

The current occupant has earned neither trust nor respect, although people say he can be trusted to lone his own pockets, persecute his imagined enemies, and insult our former allies. (Do we still have allies?). In other words, Mr. Trump can be trusted to do the wrong thing, e.g. give a tax cut to billionaires, partially paid for by a doubling or tripling of the health insurance rates for the poor and middle class. Giving a small group of people something they do not need (they already have more money than they can spend) and paying for it by taking away something really needed by a much larger group of people. Sounds like a plan, right? Maybe a concept of a plan.

Texas National Guard Deployed to Chicago (I live in Chicago.)

Setting aside the point that they have no business here, look at the photo carefully:

You done?

Clearly the TNG is a DEI organization! They got Black soldiers. They got Hispanic soldiers. And they even got wimmen! (I don’t dare call them wimmen soldiers.) From Texas! What in Jesus’s name is going on in Texas? I thought they got rid of all that DEI nonsense!

Do You Trust Trump?

Colleges and universities are being offered a “compact” from the Trump Administration that would guarantee a continuance of federal funding of research grants and whatnot if they just comply with a few trivial rules, most of which are Trump bugbears: anti-genocide protests, DEI programs, “liberal faculty” hires, etc.

Most of the commentary so far has focused on the content of the compact and that is just wrong. The focus needs to be upon whether the “partners” making the compact are trustworthy. If you don’t believe me just ask the Russians who signed a non-aggression compact with Nazi Germany.

Mr. Trump is not constrained by either tradition or the fucking Constitution, so his abiding by these compacts is a joke, a poor joke at that.

Never sign an agreement with an untrustworthy partner. Ask the myriad contractors Trump cheated out of their just due while developing real estate. (Remember when contracts were holy writ to conservatives? Not any more.)

It would be stupid to accept this “offer.”

Postscript BTW, as a former teacher’s union negotiator, I must point out that a common negotiating tactic in hardball negotiations is to place an item on the table you know your negotiating partners cannot accept. They may, however, offer a concession to remove it from the table. Cost of the offer? $0, ROI: infinite if a concession is made. You will notice Trump is not offering anything new or more, just “the same.”
