At Stop AAPI Hate, our work is grounded in the belief that we must confront racism at its root with comprehensive, non-carceral solutions to effectively prevent and respond to anti-AAPI hate.
We recognize the term “hate” is subject to different interpretations. Our coalition upholds a broad definition of hate that accounts for the various ways in which racism, prejudice and discrimination show up: interpersonally by individuals inside and outside of our communities and systemically by institutions. Our work is equally as broad, and our core strategies – 1) Data & Research, 2) Policy & Advocacy, 3) Community Care, and 4) Strategic Communications – are designed to advance the nationwide movement for racial justice on the systemic level.

Not all ACTS of hate are hate crimes
The vast majority of reports we receive from the public are not hate crimes, but rather non-criminal hate incidents — such as verbal harassment or workplace discrimination.
Even though all acts of hate are harmful and traumatic, most are not classified as crimes or hate crimes. This means they cannot be addressed through our criminal legal system.
We champion non-carceral solutions to hate because they help us confront all forms of racism and discrimination — and because carceral solutions, like policing, disproportionately harm Black and brown communities as well as Pacific Islanders.
To fulfill our mission of building a fairer, more equitable future, we focus our investment on four interlocking strategies:
Data & Research
Our coalition is the leading national reporting center for anti-Asian and anti-Pacific Islander hate acts. We also conduct in-depth research on injustices and inequities affecting Asians and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. so that we can raise public awareness, shape policies at all levels of government, and mobilize resources to support the needs of our communities.
Policy & Advocacy
We lead policy and advocacy campaigns that mobilize AA/PIs to take action in the fight for racial justice and equity. We aim to hold bad actors accountable, strengthen our civil rights, dismantle systems of oppression, and enhance support for victims and survivors of interpersonal and institutional racism.
Community Care
Stop AAPI Hate centers healing as a response to harm and violence. We provide support to individuals and communities harmed by acts of anti-AAPI hate, pilot healing programs that uncover the effects of racial trauma, strengthen community responses to harm and violence, and research and identify effective interventions for community healing.
Strategic Communications
Social change requires fundamental shifts in how everyday people and decision-makers see and perceive the world. At Stop AAPI Hate, we leverage strategic communications to tell stories of those impacted by racism, raise awareness about anti-AAPI hate, uplift narratives that challenge harmful misconceptions about AAPIs, and foster solidarity across communities.
