My Most Embarrassing Caper!

When I was a  church secretary and the elderly ladies’ group invited the Pastor and I to their meeting for lunch, (back then I was always trying to be perfect) you can be sure I had an incident to test my patience (or need to be perfect?).

I think it was a Valentine’s Day luncheon or something, because there was a punch bowl with red liquid in it.

As a dutiful secretary and lover of the elderly, I volunteered to fill up a plate for Grandma Mary and also bring her some punch.

There was a very narrow walkway between the tables upon tables that had been set up.  I don’t think a thin person would have had an easier time getting through.  So I walked sideways….carefully…slowly…and Grandma Mary was WAY at the far end of the walkway.  Balance, Debb, you can do this, I said to myself, over and over, until

ALL OF A SUDDEN  a little old lady backed her chair up with surprisingly lightning speed.   This surprised me more than the drivers who pull out into traffic without looking — because she backed right up into me.

So how could that be embarrassing, you ask?  Grandma Mary’s punched landed right into the lady’s pure white hair.  It looked like she had a skull cup on, one that was pink in color!  Grandma Mary’s plate of lunch also ended up all over the lady’s dress.  At the time I was in shock, but I have a feeling Grandma Mary’s lunch went into this lady’s  neighbor’s hair too…

And then I can also remember a foreign substance in my hair, too – this was not embarrassing, however, but downright icky!

In San Antonio and also in a Wisconsin lake, the seagulls there decided to oblige me with a little sticky, white gift.   Now in San Antonio, we were on a riverboat cruise so I could not wash it out right away, but in Wisconsin, I immediately washed that —- right outta my hair!  🙂    I guess I should just be glad these incidents didn’t happen when I had no hair.  🙂

Well, I hope this made you laugh.  It makes me smile, even now.

Some Observations

Tonight I was having a hard time finding my keys in my purse on the way home.  I knew they were in there but I just couldn’t feel or see them.  After taking off my gloves and rummaging through everything, they showed up in a side pocket.

Funny, I thought to myself.  This purse apparently is too big because things get lost in it.  But if it were smaller, then I might say that it was too small.  I wonder, can anyone really own the “perfect” size purse or briefcase?

This might be similar to a lot of people I’ve heard from who have curly hair and wish theirs could be naturally straight like other people.  Then, of course, are the straight-haired people who would rather die than be seen with their own straight hair; they put their beautician’s kids through college with all the perms they put their hair through.  Isn’t it enough that you even have hair, I would ask them.  But that point is lost on them; maybe it’s just easier to complain than to be thankful.

Could these examples possibly point to a similarity —->  we want what we don’t have?  My goal is to want what I already have and forget about the have-nots.  If anyone gets there before I do, please fill me in.

Three-Part Poem: Part I

highlands

London Sheep!

“Sunrise in the Highlands”

I.  Guinevere

Sunrise on the backdrop of the Highlands,

how beautiful a place and time,

mellow and calm.

A young lady sits on a hill

watching her beloved sheep graze.

“Guinevere” is the young lass

with curly, blonde hair

who didn’t attract the attention of others.

Her hair color in a sea of redhead

and brunette Scots made her ostracized.

She was glad of this, however,

because spending time outside

with her sheep

was the most important thing to her.

Sunrise brought her excitement

and peace each morning.

A heavy sigh escaped her lips

as she did think about her future.

Would anyone ever care for her,

a common, plain sheepwoman?

The sun rose steadily amongst the clouds

and gifted the hills with a pink hue.

How beautiful, Guinevere said,

As she jumped up to her feet

and raised her arms to the sky.

Thankful Tuesday

takes your breath away

Good morning!  Have you ever heard the idea of writing down five things a day that you are thankful for?  I try to write down ten.  It’s a good exercise because it takes me outside myself, to remember that it’s not all about me. For us, I’d like us to just simply be thankful today – no writing necessary.   If you have some situations, I have answers:

Did the sun come up too early today?   At least you are here and alive to notice it.

Just too tired and worn out?  There are some that wish they had legs so they could do activities to get tired from.  Or have legs that worked like they’re supposed to.

Too many clouds in the sky and you want to see the sun?  That makes it okay that you didn’t remember to bring your sunglasses along, and you won’t have to squint.

You’re having a bad hair day?  Some people have lost all their hair.  (I know what THAT feels like.)

Feel like there’s nothing decent in your closet to wear?  Some have to actually wear the same clothes day after day after day…

Your friends getting you down lately?  You have the best Friend of all, one who always cares.

Wish you had a different boss?  You might end up with someone even worse.  Or worse yet, no job and no boss.

Hate your job?  Would you rather be in a position of not being able to support yourself or your family?

Tired of your apartment or your house or mansion?  The secret is to want what you have, for some need a place to live that isn’t a cardboard box.

Tired of Ms. Debb rambling on and on (and on!)??  Well, she can take a hint.  I will leave you now, with one request:

I urge you to contact SunshineFactor if there’s something you just can’t be thankful for – maybe I or my other readers can help.   Debb
