You can use Gemini to summarize responses to open text questions in your Google Forms.
This feature is currently available on desktop and in English. Learn how to change your language on the web.
If you can’t find this feature and your account is part of an organization, you can ask your admin to turn on the feature for you.
Use Gemini to summarize responses
Important:
- You can find generated summaries once there are 3 to 200 responses.
- You can’t generate summaries of quiz responses.
To find the summary to a question’s responses:
- On your computer, open a form in Google Forms.
- At the top, click Responses.
- In the summary block, summaries for each text question are generated automatically.
- Optional:
- To generate a new response summary, click Retry.
- To copy the summary, click Copy.
Tips:
- If you get new responses while the summary is open, to refresh the summary, click Refresh with latest responses.
- The generated summaries aren’t saved. You can copy or generate them again.
- Summaries won’t be generated for direct questions, like names and addresses.
Generate & refine themes from responses
With Gemini, you can identify, group, and analyze common themes from Google Forms text responses in Google Sheets.
Important:
- This feature works best with 8–200 responses.
- If your form has more than 200 responses, the theme generation option becomes unavailable. The button appears grayed out and the system displays an error message.
- Themes are generated with AI functions in Google Sheets, learn about AI function limits here.
- On your computer, open a form in Google Forms.
- At the top, click Responses.
- To generate themes for a text question, scroll to the text question.
- Below the question’s summary, click See theme percentages
.
- To modify themes, click Modify themes.
- To add a theme, click Add
.
- To delete a theme, next to the name, click Delete category
.
- To add a theme, click Add
- To get a more detailed analysis, click See theme percentages
.
- The system opens a new Google Sheet that includes:
- A pie chart that visually represents the distribution of themes.
- A summary response theme count that shows how many responses are associated with each theme.
- If you encounter an error, in the Sheets side panel, click Refresh & Generate.

Tip: If the number of responses is fewer than or equal to 8, or over 500, the summary shows but the button is grayed out.
