Tell Your Senators: Protect Community Voices and Historic Places
For 60 years, the National Historic Preservation Act has protected the places that tell America’s story and given communities a say in their future. A permitting bill in the Senate, S. 5653, will weaken it.
We support faster, more predictable permitting. But as written, S. 5653 will:
- Exempt many federally funded projects from review, including highways, bridges and other construction in our communities;
- Ignore harm that doesn’t involve a bulldozer, like an overpass looming over a historic district or noise from a data center;
- Let federal agencies decide on their own that preservation doesn’t matter, with less accountability and less recourse in court.
We can build faster without erasing our history.
Tell your senators: fix it before you pass it.
We encourage you to personalize the letter before sending.
