This Saturday: Helpers of God's Precious Infants Vigil

I cannot make this vigil, but I hope people in metro Detroit will join Bishop Hanchon and others this coming Saturday.  It is Divine Mercy Saturday - a good time to remember the mercy and compassion needed to fight for life in a culture of death.

These are prayer vigils, not protests.  There are no signs; only the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Crucifix are seen at these vigils.  The aim is to pray, not just for the mother, but for those pushing her to abort her child, the abortionist, and staff.  Helpers of God's Precious Infants has considerable success in persuading mothers to follow through with their pregnancies.  They never condemn, or force women to take materials, some of which encourage them to visit crisis pregnancy centers that can help them with most of their needs.

This gives me an opportunity to point out that Imago Dei Crisis Pregnancy Center that was on 7 Mile Rd. in Detroit is now in Warren on Schoenherr Rd. between Common and 13 Mile Rd.   They take donations and always welcome volunteers.  Spread the word about their new location.

Bill Donohue to appear on Fox News at 1:15 to discuss HHS mandate

From the Catholic League (emphasis mine in bold):

The announcement on January 20 by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius that religious non-profits will have to cover sterilization and contraceptive services, including some abortion-inducing drugs, is being met with growing rancor. Catholic League president Bill Donohue speaks to this issue today:

Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, responded to the Obama administration’s edict by saying, “Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience.”

Joining him in this assessment is an unlikely ally, namely the editorial board of the Washington Post. Today, the editorial on this subject says that “requiring a religiously affiliated employer to spend its own money in a way that violates its religious principles does not make an adequate accommodation for those deeply held views.”

Michael Sean Winters at the liberal National Catholic Reporter was highly critical of the Obama edict; he even went so far as to say that Obama “lost my vote” as a result of this decision. Some prominent priests and nuns who initially supported Obamacare have also expressed their opposition to this ruling.

What’s going on? Many of those who tend to side with abortion-rights advocates also hold to the very American principle of respecting conscience rights; when these issues collide, the latter proves decisive.

The Obama administration made a fatal flaw when it assumed that most people are not going to get worked up about healthcare plans that carry contraceptive coverage. If the plans were voluntarily adopted, the administration would be right. But the difference in this instance is that this service is being mandated by the federal government, allowing no exceptions for those who in good conscience cannot go along; the inclusion of abortifacients in the policy only deepens the problem.

There is a high price paid for arrogance in politics. Stay tuned—this issue isn’t going to go away. (Source)

March for Life in DC - Happening Now - Streaming

There are a number of methods and modes to listen/watch the March for Life in Washington DC. Right now the opening Masses are taking place. It is split between two large venues in DC because there are too many people for one.

The Apostolic Nuncio, Carlo Maria Vigano, just got done offering the blessings of the Holy Father from the site of the Mass which will be celebrated by Cardinal Wuerl. The other Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal DiNardo.

Very sadly, the secular media, which will get all excited about 300 "occupy fill-in-the-blank" protesters, or even a few dozen, spending considerable time covering it, won't give this event the time of day despite a crowd of hundreds of thousands, half of them young people.  Watch the secular news tonight and there is a pretty good chance that they won't show the broad shots revealing the strength of the peaceful crowd.  They won't hesitate to show the handful of anti-life protestors.

Go to this page at EWTN to find streams depending on your location in the world. You can also find there, options for mobile streaming.

Video: Down syndrome community in France shows value for life

A veil-tip to Dcn Greg Kandra who tweeted his post on this a short time ago. This is absolutely beautiful.

Consider that, as Catholics, we believe that God created us to know Him, love Him, and serve Him. People are encouraged by professionals to abort their babies who are shown to have Down Syndrome. I know of couples who have gone through this and am grateful to say that they chose life.

Watch how the beautiful souls in this community of Down Syndrome young men give glory to God.  May this video go viral!!!

If you go to his blogpost on this, you will find a link to the  community's website.

Powerful homily for Respect Life Sunday

I was floored by Deacon Greg Kandra's homily for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary time.

Deacon Kandra writes:

Since this is Respect Life Sunday, and the beginning of Respect Life month, I wanted to talk about one woman who did respect life – and her choice has made a difference in the life of virtually every person in this church.

Her name is Joanne Schiebel. In 1954, she was a young unmarried college student who discovered that she was pregnant. In the 1950s, her options were limited. She could have had an abortion – but the procedure was both dangerous and illegal. She could have gotten married, but she wasn’t ready and didn’t want to interrupt her education. Joanne opted, instead, to give birth to the baby and put it up for adoption.

And so it was that in 1955, a California couple named Paul and Clara Jobs adopted a baby boy, born out of wedlock, that they named Steven.

We know him today…as Steve Jobs.

It would not be overstating things to say that Steve Jobs is my generation’s Thomas Edison. As one observer put it, he knew what the world wanted before the world knew that it wanted it.

If you have an iPhone or an iPad or an iPod, or anything remotely resembling them, you can thank Steve Jobs.

If your world has been transformed by the ability to hear a symphony, send a letter, pay a bill, deposit a check, read a book and then buy theater tickets on something smaller than a cigarette case…you can thank Steve Jobs.

And: you can thank Joanne Schiebel.

Read the whole thing at Deacon's Bench - it's an awesome read.

Division in the pro-life movement over use of graphic images

Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, kneeling next to Dan Goodnow (center; blue jacket), president of the Helpers of God's Precious Infants of Michigan has led prayer vigils like this in September of each year since his installation.
This one, from 2009,  drew nearly 700

Soon after arriving at Assumption Grotto in Detroit in 2005, I learned of a little known group called, the Helpers of God's Precious Infants, and all I knew was that they did pro-life work.  I was invited to go to a pro-life prayer vigil.  I was told that the founder of the growing apostolate, Msgr. Patrick Reilly, was coming in from New York to lead it.

I had been familiar with pro-life activism from the time I was quite young, but was not involved in it.  I prayed for an end to abortion in my own way.  I knew people were getting arrested and I saw anger and shouting at those going into the mills. This brought out pro-choice protestors and it sometimes got ugly.   In my teens, I recall that period of time when mills were being bombed in the off hours, and later at times that resulted in death.   While I have always been pro-life and was horrified at abortion, something seemed off with these methods, but I couldn't put my finger on it.  I wanted to get involved, but something kept me at a distance.  It wasn't that I was a coward.  I can be a pitbull.

I would later understand my own reluctance to be involved in those kinds of efforts at Mass held by Msgr. Reilly back in 2005.  There, I encountered an entirely different approach to saving lives - one that I felt had much greater potential to win not just individual battles, but the war.  In fact, it was aimed at saving souls which is how I believe Christians should work to save the lives of babies.   Abortion is such a grave evil, that human efforts alone will not stop it.  What comes to mind is the Gospel passage in which the apostles could not cast the demons out of a man.  Upon asking Our Lord about this, he explained that some demons can only be cast out with prayer and fasting (Matt 17:21, Mark 9:29).

In the major vigils, Msgr. Reilly made it clear that we were not there to protest.  We were not there to condemn the mother and others going into the mills.  We were not to bring any signs or posters of any kind; all that would be visible in this regard was a crucifix and a banner with Our Lady of Guadalupe, who is the Protectress of the Unborn.  In fact, Msgr. Reilly made it clear, our job was not to speak at all, but to pray earnestly. What really struck a chord with me, is that he passionately encouraged us to pray not just for the baby's life; he told us to pray for the mother, for the father of the child, for those encouraging the woman to have the abortion, for the doctors and staff at the mill.  His mission was clear: End abortion by changing hearts through prayer, and by being a witness to the love of  Christ.  As Archbishop Vigneron explained in the homily at Mass before his last vigil, we are merely instruments to be used by God.  His grace works through us.

On this basis, Msgr. Reilly's approach resonated with me and got me involved in the pro-life movement. I now get involved in the major vigils, extending the witness online with my photography. I support local crisis pregnancy centers, and I pray for the success of HGPI sidewalk counselors.

I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way because I don't know how else to explain why the bishops are so willing to get involved with HGPI, and just as importantly, why so many lay people and religious are willing to get involved.

The Helpers of God's Precious Infants of Michigan has been involving Catholic hierarchy here in Detroit in it's major prayer vigils for many years.  Proof of their willingness to get involved in this kind of effort is visible in the many that I have photographed and uploaded. Those which happen about 4 times yearly here in Detroit, draw no less than 250-300 and have drawn as many as 700. My last photostory from earlier this month shows that people will come out even in drenching rain to pray. Anyone wanting to know the success rate of the Helpers here in Michigan should contact them.

A "Helpers" sidewalk counselor speaks to a man who brought in a young woman.
He conversed voluntarily with several of the counselors.  Many who come to the mills feel there
are no alternatives.  When they see the "Helpers" are not confrontational, many are willing to hear
what they have to say.  Some "turn", and there are times when some months later, a woman or other
family member will return, with baby in the car, to thank them for saving the baby's life.

In between these major vigils, are the daily work of a core group of "Helpers".  When two mills are open on 8 mile, they are out there - in the rain, shine, snow, sleet, and sub-zero weather.  Among them, are trained sidewalk counselors.  As women come to the mill, they are met with compassionate faces offering them a Rosary and brochures.  They are informed of help available at local crisis pregnancy centers.   There are no confrontations, and I have witnessed a good number of the people taking the information and Rosaries.  I have witnessed some choosing to leave, or spending time talking to those outside.  For those women going through with the abortion, the same counselors hand them post-abortive literature.  Perhaps they will repent and convert, as well as avoid future abortions.  Along with the counselors are a group of "prayer warriors".  They simply stand there working the beads and praying for all involved.  There are still others who are supporting with their prayers and sacrifices away from the mills.   It is a very wholesome approach, and one that I would encourage bishops to bring into their own dioceses.

For guidance contact the Helpers of God's Precious Infants, main chapter in New York.  I'm sure the Michigan Chapter wouldn't mind providing some tips, as well.

Indiscriminate Use of Graphic Images

I think there is a time and a place to use graphic images.  I do not believe they should be used indiscriminately (as in unrestrained) and in the open where small children are needlessly exposed to them.  Some would say that they see more violence on television.  If that is happening, then some parents are not taking care to guard the innocence that that should be preserved in a small child.  Perhaps that is why there is so much violence is that parents are enabling them to become immune at a young age.

In any event, there are certain things we shield small children from.  We shield them from witnessing sex; we send them to the other room when delicate conversations are taking place, and good parents often restrict what kind of horror films small eyes should be seeing.  Why should parents then be confronted with an unexpected mobile billboard with a mutilated, aborted baby pulling up along side the car, or in front of the school, or flying in the air?

Upon learning that the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform was going to descend on Amarillo to picket parishes with graphic photos of aborted babies until Bishop Zurek released Fr. Frank Pavone from his "ecclesiastical house arrest", it became all too clear why some bishops are reluctant to get involved in pro-life activities.  Could some be persuaded not to have an abortion after seeing the photos?  I'm sure they can.  But who is counting the number of people who will now turn a blind eye to even the most peaceful of very successful efforst, like those of the Helpers of God's Precious Infants?

Of Bishops and Holy Boldness

The Martyrdom of St. Thomas Becket

Most bishops and priests today won't need to suffer a physical martyrdom; rather, the martyrdom they must suffer is a white one.  It starts at the pulpit.

+ + + + + + +

There is a discussion going on in two posts at Father Z's blog that are topics I think we should talk about in greater depth. I am linking to his posts because of the discussions taking place in his comboxes. You can pick up original links in his posts.

Respected philosopher, Dr. Peter Kreeft, recently stated something to the effect that it would be wonderful if 100 bishops were thrown in jail for marching with graphic images of aborted babies.

Yesterday, Dr. Ed Peters responded, respectfully, with a few interesting thoughts.

My own thoughts can be found in both of those comboxes.   If you want to discuss those topics, do it there where there is a good flow of dialogue already.

On to the main topic of this post....

Holy boldness begins at the pulpit, not on the street

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith. (Heb 13:7)

One commenter in the post on Peters' response suggested it would be good just to hear the bishops talk about abortion from the pulpit. I agree. There are ways to talk about things like abortion in a way that goes right over the heads of small children.

I think bishops and priests need to go back even further.  There seems not to be a problem talking about things like imigration reform (which is not the subject of this post, btw), but when was the last time you heard the word "cohabitation" in a homily, or fornication, or adultery - things that lead to unwanted pregnancies, some of which end in abortion.   Chances are, some people engaged in these things openly are distributing Holy Communion as EMHC's, or serving as catechists.

When was the last time you heard a priest or a bishop preach on sin, or the "four last things".   Incidentally, if you don't know what those are because the walls of your parish church haven't echoed them in nearly 40 years, I direct you to the blogging Msgr. Charles Pope who is unafraid to talk about such things, and he does it in a thought-provoking way, without condescension.   Make this man a bishop!  That's right; I said it!

I'll take it a step beyond the pulpit.  There are too few pastoral letters on subjects like those I mention above.  I pray for the day when I can visit the USCCB website and see a statement on cohabitation right smack on the front page.   I'll bet the New York Times would give it some publicity as they gasp at the audacity of  such "judgmentalism".  If you are wondering how so many young, unmarried Catholics today can be living and sleeping together, seemingly ignorant of the 10 Commandments, I'll tell you how it happens...

Kids are taught the 10 Commandments in the 2nd Grade.  Of course, they really can't be taught all of the Commandments at that age for obvious reasons.  Many do not come back for catechesis until the 8th grade when they want to make their Confirmation.  Does the material revisit the 10 Commandments at this time?  I know it didn't when I went back.  It seems to me we were still reflecting on how much God loved us without any mention as to how we were suppose to love God back, which starts with those Commandments.   Parents,  often ill-catechised themselves, or thinking that their kids are hearing it in catechism, or just plain lazy, or uninspired and running on empty for lack of hearing it from the pulpit, do not cover the 10 Commandments in the home with their older children, and there you have it: A generation of young people who get shocked when they go into the parish office, want to get married and are lucky enough to find a pastor who then tells them that they ought not be living together.  Why is this the first time they hear it?  Many a priest, and many a parent will have to answer for not teaching these things.  God have mercy on them.

In these days of often anemic homilies, our bishops and priests need to do a serious, collective self-examination on why they cannot bring themselves to talk about things like those mentioned above.  We don't need them  thrown in jail for carrying graphic pictures of abortions; we need them to understand what it is that must die within the self  for them to begin preaching about the fullness of the faith, rather than just parts of it. They ought not worry about the handful that are going to walk out of Church on account of pride when they discuss difficult topics.   If someone starts shouting from the pews, stop preaching, stand there humbly and wait for them to leave, which they usually do.  Consider that an entire town told Our Lord to stay away because they didn't want to know the truth.  Don't yield to these types who are sitting in the pews and thus refrain to teach the rest of us the fullness of the faith.    There is way too much concern for the self-esteem of a few and not enough concern for the eternal souls of the many.  In these times, there is no room for such false charity and spineless reserve.

For our part, we need to do a serious, collective examination on how much time we spend on our knees praying for the sanctification of bishops and priests, and for them to get the holy boldness they need.   Perhaps we in the pew, through lack of prayer for them, have earned the banalities we have been lamenting for so long.  We would do well to start spending no less than one hour per week in a holy hour for this purpose, most especially on Thursday evenings - meditating on Our Lord's passion, asking for vocations, and praying for the sanctification of the priesthood.  Don't let the lack of an adoration chapel in your area stop you; just shut the TV off, get off the internet, and do it in the home if it is all that is available.

For those who live locally, Assumption Grotto has a holy hour every Thursday following the 7:00 pm Mass for the sanctification of the priesthood.  There is secured parking.

EDIT SEPT 21:  Quick, go read a column by a bishop who just mentioned cohabitation (and a few other things).  Bravo! Bravo, Bishop!

EDIT SEPT 20: I have been getting some positive responses in email from priests and deacons.  There are some additional points I would like to offer with regards to "how" sensitive subjects should be approached in homilies (and how they should not be discussed).  I can't speak from experience on the preaching end because I'm not a priest; rather, I have experience on the receiving end which might yield some fruit if I "think out loud" about it.  I hope to do this within a few days or a week, at most.  Stay tuned.

A few words were added for clarification on a couple of points I was making, as well.

Fr. Eduard Perrone leads the summer 2011 Helper's of God's Precious Infants Prayer Vigil

Assumption Grotto's pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone led the summer prayer vigil for the Helpers of God's Precious Infants of Michigan

What follows is a photo slideshow, and a link to the online gallery if you cannot view the slideshow or want to look through them at your own pace.

Here is an audio clip of Fr. Perrone's homily which packed an awful lot in less than 7 minutes.

Here is the slideshow.  I recommend setting it to "fast" and it will cycle through at a nice pace. There are some seemingly redundant photos, but some of these were taken for stock photos and the slideshow function only lets me create what is in the folder.

Here is a direct link to the gallery if you prefer to click through them one at a time. You might want to click through other vigils and pro-life events I have photographed in recent years, in my Culture of Life tab.

Helpers of God's Precious Infants vigil with Bishop Reiss - April 16th

In an email sent to me by the Helpers:

The next Prayer Vigil for Life, sponsored by Helpers of God's Precious Infants of Michigan, will this time be held during the Holy Season of Lent on Saturday, April 16th, 2011, at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Eastpointe. The Most Reverend Francis Reiss, Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit, is the celebrant.

We need your help in spreading the word, so please invite your family, friends, pastor, parish, blog readers and so on....
We greatly hope and pray to see you there on April 16th (which, by the way, is both the day before Palm Sunday AND our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI's 84th birthday! ) On behalf of Dan Goodnow and all the "Helpers," may God richly bless you and your families in this holy season, and all that you do for LIFE!

Unemployed electrical worker, father, turns down job to build Planned Parenthood clinic

Standing on principle and faith, Tim Roach turns down a much needed job.

The Catholic Spirit, the official publication of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, has an interesting story about an unemployed worker who was offered a job. His hopes went up, but when he heard it was a Planned Parenthood clinic, he turned it down before he could blink.

Tom Peters blogs on this, and on another worker whose conscience would not permit him to accept an offered job for similar reasons.

Pro-life Flash-Mob counters abortion supporters protesting bill which defunds Planned Parenthood

Go to Fr. Z's blogpost which has several videos embedded of an interesting event which took place in Chicago.  A "flash-mob" is an impromptu event which comes about as a result of circulating a time and place through social media.  They are sometimes arranged in very little time, which makes them a surprise.  Sometimes it is people singing or dancing in a mall or a train-station.  This time, it was used by a group of mostly young adult and teen pro-lifers to counter a demonstration that was taking place by pro-aborts against the bill which defunds Planned Parenthood.

When contrasting the two crowds - the pro-lifers and the pro-aborts, look at the difference between them.

Video and explanation was sent by a reader of Fr. Z's blog.  Amazing!

Archbishop Dolan and Dr. Alveda King on the removal of prolife billboard in NY City

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York City

Archbishop Dolan reacts to the removal of a billboard which stated that the most dangerous place for African-Americans is the womb.

While some have painted this as racist, Dr. Alveda King, the niece of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Director of African-American Outreach at Priests for Life, had other thoughts. She blasted removal of the billboard as censorship. Says King:

Dr. Alveda King

Black people in New York and all over the country should be outraged at the numbers of black babies we lose every single day to abortion. An astonishing 60 percent of African-American pregnancies in the five boroughs of New York City end in abortion. That’s unfathomable!

“Some people are angry about the billboard, but that anger is misplaced. We should all be upset and heartbroken that so many African-American women have bought into the lie that abortion will solve their problems. Legal abortion has been with us for 38 years, and the problems facing the African-American community have not gone away.”

Dr. King concluded: “The message of this billboard is totally accurate. The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb! It’s a travesty of justice that it is being taken down.”
The National Black Prolife Coalition had this to say in it's press release yesterday:

“New York has been dubbed, by the media, the abortion capitol of the nation. Where else should the debate take place than in the city where more black babies are aborted than are born alive”, said Catherine Davis of the Black Prolife Coalition. Sixty percent of the abortions in New York City are performed on black women. “That is not an accident, and we believe Planned Parenthood Founder, Margaret Sanger’s ‘Negro Project’ is why,” Davis continued. “Black women have been targeted by the abortion industry since its inception, and New York provides the snapshot of what it looks like when that succeeds.”

[snip]
On Monday, February 28, 2011 the National Black ProLife Coalition will hold a National Day of Mourning (http://www.blackprolifecoalition.org/) to call attention to the genocidal impact of abortion on communities of color. “We will mourn the loss of possibility in our aborted children. We will mourn for the women who have lost their lives or have been maimed at the abortionist’s hand,” said Arnold Culbreath of Protecting Black Life.

“And when the mourning is completed, we will continue to help women in New York City and across America to have access to free services that will help them keep and care for their children”, said Dean Nelson, Vice President of Underserved Outreach for CareNet, the nation’s largest network of Pregnancy Care Centers. The National Black Prolife Coalition, CareNet, EMC Pregnancy Centers and local leaders are fighting to defeat New York City Council Bill #371 that aims to shut down all Pregnancy Care Centers in the city.

I can't help but wonder if there is a higher rate of abortion clinic mishaps among African Americans in New York City to match the higher abortion statistics (infections, perforated bowels or other damaged organs, some requiring a hysterectomy, anesthetic overdose, etc.).

Where should the charge of racism be pitched?  Why not in the direction of media and officials who ignore hard data?   Let's face it, if 60% of African American babies were dying in the womb of any other cause but abortion, it would not be so conveniently dismissed. Who among those persons aborted might have discovered a cure for cancer or diabetes, invented technology to permit space travel, or just lived life as an ordinary person who graced us with his or her presence?

Archbishop Dolan of New York City didn't mince words in his post, "Unpleasant Truths":

Arcbp Dolan
It’s unpleasant to look at open heart surgery, or a pair of diseased lungs, or to see a person who has lost fingers, toes, or the esophagus, all due to smoking. The ads are nauseating, even hideous, to see. But the New York State Department of Health, among many others, sponsors these kinds of ads because they know that they can help to save lives.

Another ad has been generating some fierce reactions. Here in New York, a billboard was recently displayed, that simply stated “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.” This message was accompanied by a photograph of a young, African-American girl.

Is that message unpleasant? Is it upsetting? Does it get our attention?

Yes!

Because the message is somberly true. The City of New York’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recently released its vital statistics from a year ago which showed that 59.8% of African-American pregnancies in New York City ended in abortion. That’s even higher than the chilling city-wide average of 41% of pregnancies ending in abortion. (I joined other community leaders from a diversity of religious and ethnic backgrounds at a press conference sponsored by the Chiaroscuro Foundation about this a few weeks ago.)

So why has the billboard suddenly been taken down? What was it that moved many of our elected officials to condemn this ad and call for the gag order. Are they claiming that free speech is a right enjoyed only by those who favor abortion or their pet causes? Do they believe that unpleasant and disturbing truths should not be spoken? Or are they afraid that when people are finally confronted with the reality of the horror of abortion, and with the toll that it is taking in our city, particularly in our African-American community, that they will be moved to defend innocent, unborn, human life?

Perhaps I’m more saddened by this intolerance right now because on Monday I will be celebrating the funeral mass for Doctor Bernard Nathanson(*), that giant of the pro-life movement, who died earlier this week. If you don’t know Dr. Nathanson’s story, you should. At one time, he fought hard to promote and expand abortion on demand in this state and in our country. He was one of the founders of the National Abortion Rights Action League. He ran what he called the “largest abortion clinic in the Western world,” and bragged about personally performing thousands of abortions. But, when Dr. Nathanson was confronted with the undeniable truth, when he could see the unborn baby in the womb through the use of ultrasound technology, he abandoned his support for abortion and became a crusader for the protection of the life of the baby in the womb.

His courage and bravery should be an inspiration to us, especially when we have to face unpleasant and sobering truths.

Requiescat in Pace, Dr. Bernard Nathanson

I learned through a blogpost by Dr. Ed Peters that Dr. Bernard Nathanson has died at the age of 84.  Dr. Nathanson was the abortionist who converted and was baptized into the Catholic Church.  He is probably most known for the movie, Silent Scream, in which an ultrasound video of an unborn baby, 11 weeks into gestation is aborted.  Keep in mind, it was witnessing just such an ultrasound that prompted Abbey Johnson, the former Planned Parenthood director to walk out into the arms of peaceful pro-lifers in front of her clinic.

Peters offers some very good catechesis on how we should pray for Nathanson.  You might ponder this question:  Do we need to pray for him on account of the roughly 75,000 abortions he was involved with?  Find out here.

Here he is speaking in an ad found on YouTube:

Interesting Catholic Reads for February 10, 2011

Tomorrow is the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. This photo was taken following the 7:00pm Latin Novus Ordo Mass at Assumption Grotto on February 11, 2008, which was the 150th anniversary.  The priests, deacon and transitional deacon all knelt before the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and led the Holy Rosary.

I am unaware if there will be a special Mass at 7:00pm Friday for Our Lady of Lourdes with all available priests.  Typically, the Friday evening Mass is in the extraordinary form (1962 Missal) and the Rosary follows all weekday Masses.  I plan on going in the morning.

I've been unable to post on a daily basis.  I will often "Tweet" things I want to pass along to readers (watch the feed in my sidebar).  Since someone else has already covered the news or topic, it's a matter of drawing it to your attention.

A few blogposts and news items...
Louis Belanger blogged on the Medjugorje commission, Pope Benedict, and the light of truth in his post: Medjugorje: De veritate nunquam satis (concerning truth one can never say enough).  Louis also placed this thought into the Vatican Information Service blogpost: Catholic Universities: Lead Students to Light of the World.

On a similar topic, Donal Foley, author of Understanding Medjugorje, takes a close look at the critique recently offered by Denis Nolan on the 2006 book (link to Nolan's article is embedded in Foley's response).

Fr. Angelo over at MaryVictrix, offers a thought provoking post enttitled, Alternate States of Unreality, which does a deep dive into the Occult, Magic & Mysticism, Harry Potter, and Theology of the Body.

Father Z fields a question: Is it a sin not to pray every day?

I heard about this on Catholic radio, but Tom Peters, the American Papist blogs on it  here: Chicago Catholic Hospital offers to help women halt abortions.  There are women who begin the process and then change their minds.

Update on Video Exposing Planned Parenthood's Sex-Trafficking Coverup

Here are some followup news stories related to the investigative video reporting by LiveAction.org exposing Planned Parenthood employees casually coaching a man acting as a pimp for underage girls, how to get abortions for them.  They are also coached in how to get around the age issue of those having sex with underage girls when they come in for abortions.  There does not seem to be any concern for the girls, and what kind of misery they may be living in, not to mention that it is illegal and Planned Parenthood is obligated to report anything that would be classified as statutory rape.

For much more on the excellent investigative reporting, visit the LiveAction.org blog

23 year old puts law enforcment to shame on Planned Parenthood investigative report

By now, you have probably heard about the latest investigative report/sting of Planned Parenthood in which a clinic worker was coaching a person posing as a sex-trafficker on how to get abortions for underage girls.  Nancy Lopez first gave the story visibility yesterday.  The clinic worker has since been fired. But this is not the first, or last time we will see this kind of thing out of Planned Parenthood employees.  Here is the video if you have not seen it:

The sting is the undercover work of LiveAction.org (high traffic was interrupting the main site, so check back if you get an error).  This is not the first time LiveAction.org has exposed clinic workers of offering illegal advice, not to mention showing a lack of concern for the supposed underage girls who would be returned to the "care" of their pimp.

It also comes in the wake of the horrific case of the Gosnell case in Philadeplphia. The recent grand jury report on the case, in which the infamous abortionist was found to be delivering babies live then killing them in a brutal fashion, revealed 20 years worth of neglect on the part of government officials who turned a blind eye to complaints. On top of that, taxpayers paid the legal bills!

Now we have a 23 year old woman, and a team of young people with a camera, doing the very investigative work that law enforcement officials should be doing.   Abortion clinics are getting away with much more than murder, and it is all happening under the nose of authorities who simply do not want to know what is going on in these places.

Horror: Abortionist kills newborns with scissors (video of DA discussing case)

{Updated with additional links}

People say abortions should be legal because "back alley abortions" are dangerous.  Tell that to the woman killed at the hands of an abortionist - Kermit Gosnell in Pennsylvania.

In the process of investigating the death of a 41 year old immigrant, authorities were horrified at what they found: The remains of seven infants who were born alive through induced labor and had their spines cut with scissors through the back of their necks.  For investigators to know they were born alive would mean that they have evidence the babies had a first breath.  These were babies that were viable, some up to 8+ months in gestation.  Not only was the abortionist arrested, but some staff members, were also taken into custody.

This is a story that would leave anyone in tears as it did me last night. A nation is shocked, and the case is on display for the world. While some will dismiss it as "the act of one bad man", what about the officials who ignored valid complaints as the district attorney explains below.

COMPLAINTS WENT  IGNORED FOR DECADES

This comes after decades of unresponsiveness to complaints.  Those who did not followup on the complaints should also be prosecuted. Here is what District Attorney, Seth Williams had to say at his blog:

The grand jury investigation revealed that, for over two decades, government health and licensing officials had received repeated reports about Gosnell’s dangerous practices. No action was ever taken, however, even after the agencies learned that women had died during routine abortions under Gosnell’s care.
“I am aware that abortion is a hot-button topic,” said District Attorney Williams. “But as District Attorney, my job is to carry out the law. A doctor who knowingly and systematically mistreats female patients, to the point that one of them dies in his so-called care, commits murder under the law. A doctor who cuts into the necks severing the spinal cords of living, breathing babies, who would survive with proper medical attention, is committing murder under the law.”

Watch this video in which a local Fox affiliate interviews the District Attorney. He said that the Grand Jury was outraged at the lack of oversight saying that a hair salon gets more oversight than an abortion clinic. He also says that it is likely that this man has killed thousands of babies in his career, but they can only prosecute him on those found in his clinic.

Most in the pro-life movement know what happens to women in these legal clinics. Some are maimed for life, needing hysterectomies or bowel repair, but it's a well-kept secret.

COMMON SENSE, OR LACK THEREOF

Does anyone really think that the pain those babies felt at the hands of Gosnell was greater than the pain felt by infants who are dismembered alive in the womb or birth canal in legal abortions?  This may be hard to read for the uninformed, but it is still legal in some states to deliver a baby feet first, leaving the head in the canal so she cannot draw a first breath, then puncturing her skull with a blunt object.  Does a breath of air suddenly permit the baby to feel pain that it would not feel otherwise in the womb?  Let's be realistic.  What about those babies who are burned alive chemically?

What more compelling evidence does one need that it is not a blob of tissue when it is known that some survive chemical abortions and are put on a cold shelf to die.  Jill Stanek was a nurse who blew the whistle on the practiceGianna Jessen is a survivor of chemical abortion which left her with cerebral palsy, but not a broken spirit. Thanks to Jill, and others who testified, President Bush signed into law the requirement to give treatment to babies who survive abortions (see "Born Alive Infant Protection Act").  But make no mistake, the Gosnell case proves that just because there is a law doesn't mean it will be taken seriously and enforced.

I am glad to see that even the liberal, secular media has made the facts of this case known without holding back the gruesome details.  I leave you with a mix of resources to see for yourself.
SUFFERING AFTER AN ABORTION?

For those suffering from the psychological effects of abortion, there are compassionate resources.  Young girls are often pushed against their will, girlfriends threatened, and people misled into believing that they are eliminating a blob of tissue.  There are sources for healing among other women who regret their abortions.

TO DEFENDERS OF ABORTION
For those who defend abortion, please know exactly what it is you are defending.  Click through some of the links on this page for photos and videos of abortions at various stages.  It's easy to defend a practice which kills someone you can't see.  Is this what we want to be remembered for in future generations? There are organizations out there that will help women with a crisis pregnancy, but some are actually abortion centers.  There are many more loving couples that would love to have your baby, and help you with expenses to bring him or her to term.  Call a local Catholic Church, which would always send you to a pro-life crisis pregnancy center.  It's not a matter of what you do with your own body, it's a matter of what you are about to do to someone else's body.

Archbishop Vigneron to celebrate Mass; speak at pro-life conference on January 22

Please take note of this opportunity here in the Archdiocese of Detroit - a conference, a Mass celebrated by our archbishop, and more on January 22 = all as people prepare for the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the March for Life in Washington DC.

Detroit — The Archdiocese of Detroit will mark the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision with a conference designed to revivify and deepen pro-life activism.

The 1973 decision effectively legalized abortion on demand in the United States, and its anniversary has become the focus of annual demonstrations and other events lamenting its effects and rallying supporters of unborn children’s right to life.

The Saturday, January 22, conference at Sacred Heart Major Seminary will feature speakers and workshops on the theme of “Life is a Gift – Giving Witness to the Sacredness of all Human Life.”

The conference was the idea of Archbishop Allen Vigneron, who will also be one of the day’s speakers.

“The archbishop wanted to renew the message of the Gospel of Life in our archdiocese,” said Socorro Truchan, marriage, family and pro-life coordinator for the archdiocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis.

The conference will be in addition to the annual archdiocesan Mass for Life, to be celebrated the previous weekend, on Sunday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

Archbishop Vigneron will also be blessing buses headed to the March for Life.  Read the rest of the article: Speakers to stress that ‘Life is a Gift’ at The Michigan Catholic

New Book: unPLANNED by Abby Johnson (former Planned Parenthood leader)

Remember Abby Johnson - the Planned Parenthood leader who walked out of the clinic and into the arms of peaceful pro-life prayer warriors after witnessing an abortion close up?  Here is an announcement by Ignatius Press on her new book which tells the story.

Dear Friends,

There’s a big story breaking concerning a new book from Ignatius Press. I’m confident you’ll want to know about it and will want to spread the word to your friends.

Next week, former Planned Parenthood director and 2008 “employee of the year” Abby Johnson will expose what happens behind the closed doors of the abortion industry. In her blockbuster, revealing new book, Unplanned, she explains how she went from directing an abortion facility to working for the prolife cause!

And not just any abortion facility but the place at which the first 40 Days for Life campaign was launched in 2004.

“Six 40 Days for Life campaigns were conducted outside her workplace,” reports 40 Days for Life Campaign Director Shawn Carney, “before Abby experienced a profound conversion during the Fall 2009 campaign ... and literally walked into my office with deep remorse to tell me she wanted out of the abortion business.”

Unplanned tells the whole amazing, life-changing story.

Of course, Planned Parenthood didn’t take Abby’s prolife conversion lightly. They wanted to shut her up. So they filed a lawsuit against her and against Shawn to keep them both quiet.

Planned Parenthood lost the case and now Abby is telling her insider’s story. She reveals the shocking details about Planned Parenthood, and why she changed her mind and heart about abortion.

Next Tuesday, January 11, Ignatius Press is launching the book, in cooperation with our co-publishing friends at Tyndale House and Focus on the Family. We have a special Ignatius Press edition, which features an exclusive note from Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio, Ignatius Press’ Founder and Editor, as well as a foreword from Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life, and an introduction by 40 Days for Life National Director, David Bereit. You can preorder the special Ignatius Press edition of Unplanned here. For a limited time, Unplanned is available at Ignatius Press’ website at 35% off, the best price available on the web! For bulk orders, email webhelp@ignatius.com

Our friends at 40 Days for Life are hosting a live webcast with Abby, on the night before the book is released—on Monday, January 10, at 9 PM Eastern (8 PM Central, 7 PM Mountain, 6 PM Pacific). This will be a sneak preview of Unplanned’s “no-holds-barred revelations” about the abortion business and its victims.
