My Ghost Was Annoyed

Above photo shows my sage broom, and some incense holders and packages.

I’m pretty sure my house Ghost was annoyed with me one afternoon a few years ago.

I had just taken a photo of my sage smudge broom to use in a poem that day, when I heard a small crash out in the kitchen. I came out of the bedroom to see what was going on.

I looked around a minute, then saw a magnet had fallen off the refrigerator door. It had been slung across the room. It wasn’t a special magnet, just one I’d gotten at a yard sale years ago of a beach scene with umbrella, because I like collecting all kinds.

Anyway, the thing is you’d think a magnet falling off the refrigerator wouldn’t be that easy, right? I mean it’s magnetized and stuck there. It had been stuck there for a long long time. You’d also think it would have just fallen straight down to the floor. But no … this one had somehow come unstuck and then gone completely sideways at least 3 to 4 feet away into the next room. It also had to have jagged around a portion of the wall that sticks out several inches right by the fridge.

I’m no stranger to things flying around from time to time. It’s happened many times. I think my Ghost was annoyed because I had the smudge broom out and they were maybe thinking I was trying to banish him/her from the house. I wasn’t at all. I love having my Ghost around here. It’s usually pretty quiet, but every once in awhile I’m made aware he/she is still around. 🙂

Witchy Fun

***

This is a poem I wrote for October Poetry Writing Month, way back in 2014.

There are a lot of TV and movie witches that have brought us fun entertainment over the years.

Being it’s Halloween again, I thought I’d re-post it. Enjoy! 🙂

WITCHY FUN

From Oz to Salem, to suburban mayhem,

The witches entertained us all.

The witch of the west, was creepy at best,

And Glinda was belle of the ball.

Samantha twitched her nose,

Whenever she chose, and

Sabrina’s cat talks to her, it is true.

Elphaba was wicked,

Endora was vivid…

They all were an interesting crew.

The Sanderson sisters were funny and camp,

The witches of Eastwick were duped…

They all used their craft, and a bit of their vamp,

But Morticia’s my all favorite champ.

~

Shows referenced = Bewitched, The Wizard of Oz, The Addams Family, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Hocus Pocus, The Witches of Eastwick, and Wicked (broadway play)

Five Reasons Why Your Restaurant is Dead to Me Now

***

This is a large paper I stuck up on one of our kitchen doors. It has listed all the restaurants I could think of at the time that we go to occasionally. For awhile I was making a mark by them, so we could see how many times we visited that particular place. I haven’t updated the list in a long time, and some of these are not in business any more. Others, I forgot to put on the list at all.  You can click the photo to see it better.

Some of the restaurants have been exed XX out, and here’s why…

You know, we go out to eat quite a lot around here, and most always enjoy it. Sometimes it’s just fast food, sometimes a more fancy place. We get take-out a lot of times, but mostly we’ll go inside a restaurant to sit down and eat. We’re pretty regular customers at several places here in town, but sometimes something happens that makes us cross them off our list. We won’t ever go back to these.

They are pronounced dead.

Here’s a few things I’ve noticed about eating establishments that turn me off of them:

  • Cockroaches = If when using the restaurant’s bathroom, you shouldn’t have to lift your legs to prevent a whole army of cockroaches from crawling up while you’re sitting there. If the restroom is this bad, heaven only knows what’s going on in the kitchen area where the food is prepared.

  • Illness = If one of your employees is sick with something, and they are coughing, sneezing, and wiping their noses while taking your order, or serving your food, you should send them home until they are well. To have them continue to work, all the while complaining of how bad they feel, and how sick they are out loud to everyone, should be an indication you will lose customers. Besides, they will infect other employees and customers, too.

  • Lax cleaning = When the tables and condiment bottles on the table (salt, pepper, hot sauce, etc) are sticky from being used so often, you should clean them off with a sanitary wipe after each customer leaves the table. This goes for wiping down the tables, too. Don’t use a filthy rag, get a fresh one each time. Your dirty wash water and rag only spreads germs around. We see you do this … ugh!

  • Check the salad bar often = When there are flies in the restaurant, you can be sure they will land on the salad fixings. I saw one stuck in the pudding one time!

  • Check the register tape for accurate addition of charges of a meal. Don’t charge us $315.00 for a ham sandwich, and we have to point it out to you.

I’m sure there are more reasons that I can’t remember now, but hope this hasn’t grossed you out too much!

After Jimmy had left for the station house, Terry and Kinsey started to clean up the glass shards left on the floor. “Here, I’ll help with the windows,” Terry said. Kinsey got out the broom and dustpan, and began sweeping. Terry went downstairs to find some cardboard boxes that beer had been delivered in. He cut some up to fit in the broken window.

“Guess that will do for now,” Kinsey said, shaking his head. “I’ll call the repair shop in the morning for another window pane to be put in.”

“Okay then, I’m heading home,” Terry said. “I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.”

“Yeah, I’m turning in, too,” Kinsey said, as he went downstairs with Terry. He locked the back door, then headed back up to his apartment. First, he called Zach to let him know what had happened, and let him know he was staying at home now. Next, he fixed himself a snack, then went to bed. It seemed strange to try to sleep, in the late afternoon, but he was still sick and exhausted. Rest seemed the best medicine right now.

Jimmy got back to the police station, and filed his report of the crime, and put the brick and note into the evidence room. After more paperwork, he sent out an APB for every police headquarters from Missing Mile to the west coast. Someone would spot Maxy sooner or later.

~

Steve and Ghost had slept for several hours. Waking that late afternoon, they were hungry, so worked together in the kitchen to fix a meal.

“Something happened,” Ghost said. “I think it’s over at Kinsey’s”

Steve stopped chopping onions…”What do you mean?”

Ghost shrugged. “I’m not sure, but it wasn’t good. When Terry got to the club, he found something. They all know about it, now…Terry, and Jimmy, and Kinsey. Maybe you could call them?” he asked.

“Yeah, I will after we eat,” Steve said. “If it was really important, they would have called us.”

He finished up cooking their supper of tacos, and they both sat down to eat. Spirit sat on the table, begging for slivers of cheese, which Ghost tossed to him now and again.

“Hey, Steve, what’s gonna happen next?”

“Next? Like when we finish eating, or farther down the road?” Steve asked.

Ghost looked puzzled. “What’s down the road? Are we going somewhere?”

“No…I just wanted to find out what you meant,” Steve said. “What we’ll be doing next, like tonight, or later on…next year?” he laughed, since it was almost next year, already.

“Oh…well, later I guess,” Ghost said. “I mean, there isn’t a show coming up, and we aren’t having a party, and we already did our CD and book…so, now what?”

“Good question,” Steve said. “I haven’t really thought of it much…just about Linda and her kids coming to live here. That will be so cool.”

“Yeah, that’s right…when?”

“She said after New Year’s she’d get things going. She’ll probably have to see if Lisa will come, too. Then, there is the kid’s school…maybe sell the house. It’ll take awhile before she can come,” Steve said. “Did you have something in mind you wanted to do, like a vacation, or work on another CD?”

“No, I didn’t know anything,” Ghost said. “But, I think we’ll be bored, so I want something to do, ya know.” He looked bored already.

Steve eyed him. “Bored already? Do you have to be doing something fantastic all the time?”

Ghost nodded, “Yeah, or I’m bored.”

Steve laughed, “Well, when you think of something, let me know, ’cause doing nothing sounds good to me.”

“But, I’m so tired of doing nothing,” Ghost whined. He got up and looked out the back door. “I don’t like this part of the days. It’s like it’s cold, then warm, then boring, because Christmas is over.”

“Ya want to go for a drive, or go shopping?”

“No, nothing sounds good or fun,” Ghost said.

“Well, Dude, I’m gonna go relax…maybe read, or take a nap. You’re on your own…figure it out,” Steve said. He went to the living room, got his book, and stretched out on the couch.

Ghost sighed. “I’m going to the graveyard. Maybe the guys will have a suggestion.”

“Okay, y’all have fun out there,” Steve said.

Ghost put on his old Army jacket, and striped scarf, just in case it got cold, then went out the back door. Trudging through the back yard, he watched Spirit bound ahead of him. Wherever the cat stopped, that’s where he would stop, too. Spirit was used to their favorite spot, so he did stop there. He leapt upon the crooked headstone, looked at Ghost, and meowed.

“Ya sure this is the place?” Ghost asked. He stroked Spirit’s soft fur, then sat down, leaning back against the cold granite marker. He knew the stories of all the Civil War dead out here…heard them talking all the time. This time maybe they’d say something different if he asked them a question.

To get in a better frame of mind, he pulled out the tin box he and Steve had hidden back behind the marker. It held a candle, matches, rolling papers, and weed. He took a few minutes to roll up a joint. He’d never had a whole one to himself, before…having always shared with Steve, but now…why not? He lit up.

Immediately, he could tell that this was some of Terry’s good stuff. He let the drug take over for awhile, just relaxing, and thinking of nothing special. As his mind drifted, he giggled at the thought, that here he was, still doing nothing, but feeling ok with it. He began talking out loud to himself about all they’d been through, lately. It had been a lot.

“We did our book, and CD…and we had a big show…that was fun.” He smiled, remembering it. “And, Linda was here, and we were so nervous to see her, but she’s real nice. Then, there was that crap with Maxy and the cameras…God, I hope I never see him again.” He frowned, then shook it off, wanting to talk only about good times. “

“Steve liked the present I gave him…that Thunder-bird car is his baby. And, I love my ring.” He stopped and looked at it. He loved shiny things, and never wanted to take it off. The smoke was finished, so he drifted some more. Half awake, half asleep, he asked the spirits what he should do next…not really expecting an answer.

Then, he sensed a strange message. He couldn’t tell if it was in his head, or out loud, that the spirit talked. “Oh, hell no!” he said out loud, as he sat up and looked around. “Who said that? That’s crazy. I’m not that bored,” he said, looking out into the shadows of the graveyard. But, the message kept pestering him. He heard over and over…”Dig us up…set us free.” He’d never heard anything like that, before, and it spooked him.

“Stop saying that,” he said, but then, he’d think…what if I did do it? Would it really set their spirits free…for real? He rolled over to look further into the cemetery, looking for any apparitions. His eyes sharpened, as he focused on a grave, way back in the shadows of the pine trees. A misty form was taking shape.

Power of Color

***

For today’s SLS we are to find bands with a color in their name. So many colors, so many bands, so many good songs. Well, I had fun listening to a bunch, putting them on here, then finding another one and putting it on here, then deleting those and finding another one. I sure enjoyed hearing the songs, but still I had to choose one.

So, I went with one I like, and we did see them in a local concert one time. We also bought their CD.

Founding members, Kym Warner and Carol Young are from Austrailia, and formed this bluegrass band. I like their sound a lot.

From Wiki:

Fascination is the fourth studio album released by the progressive bluegrass band, The Greencards. It was their first album released on the Sugar Hill Records label.[2] Released on April 21, 2009, it draws inspiration from bluegrass, rock, and blues. The album was described by member Carol Young as their own kind of sound, resulting from several years touring together

“Rivertown”, by The Greencards, is on their 2009 album, “Fascination”. It was written by Kym Warner, and Carol Young, and is on the Sugar Hill label.

Midnight, I’m driving in the pouring rain
The thought washed over me
Will I ever be here again on this day or any other day?Sheets of rain like honey, made it hard to see
Turns of the road ahead fast approaching me
Approaching me, fast approaching meOoh, gotta get out of this Rivertown
I’ll get a ferry and ride to a higher ground
Far from RivertownThis town it leaves me empty
Alone I walk the streets all are lined with potholes
Left bruises on my feet, on my feet, bruises on my feetWeathered sheets of awning at the green grocer store
Been falling down on the side walk
For fifteen years or more, fifteen years or moreOoh, gotta get out of this Rivertown
I’ll get a ferry and ride to a higher ground
Far from RivertownThis windy road I travel in the highest gear
These wheels are gonna take me far away from here
Away from here, far away from here
So take me at this moment in the driver’s seat
There ain’t no one in Rivertown
Gonna be missing me, gonna be missing meOoh, gotta get out of this Rivertown
I’ll get a ferry and ride to a higher ground
Ooh, gotta get out of this Rivertown
I’ll get a ferry and ride to a higher ground

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Oct. 28, 2023

***

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “oo.” Find a word with “oo” in it or just use “oo” because why not? Whatever you decide on, use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

***

Oops! Just had to say that, because that could be my middle name. haha 😮

I have oops moments about a million times a day. There will be oops when I drop things, knock things over, stumble, stub my toe, mess something up, make typing mistakes and have to start over, say the wrong words at the wrong times, or not saying something when I should have. Whew! It’s a job just keeping up with all the oops moments.

Anyway, the first thing I thought of was this song. I like it a lot, and I like the promise that things will get better. I think that applies to myself, and hopefully to other people and their troubles, and the world, which is in such a mess in all corners and ways.

Wish we could just say ‘oops’ and have a fresh start, a do-over. Wouldn’t that be wonderful! 🙂
