I chose to feature Freddy Fender. His birthday is June 4th, 1937. Sadly he passed away on October 14, 2006..We still have one of his vinyl albums and are familiar with lots of his songs. His band plays Tex/Mex, Country & Tejano type songs, and are really catchy to hear.

“A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada”, by Freddy Fender with the Texas Tornados, is on the soundtrack for the 1996 film, “Tin Cup” with Kevin Costner. wiki article is here

Met her in a border town
We proceeded to get down
She turned me on
I dropped the telephoneMoonlight hits the Rio Grande
And the touch of her hand
It makes me high
Like the Fourth of JulyThe bad bandido came into town
But man, I’m gonna hunt that gringo down
But these words keep ringin’ in my earA little bit is better than nada
Sometime you want the whole enchilada
A little bit is better than nada
A little bit or nothin’ at allSaid Cancun was not her style
Turistas there, they drove her wild
The border’s the place
Put on a brand new face

Me and the boys had just hit town
Shake ’em up and rode ’em down
I guess it was fate
I hope I wasn’t too late

May 31 – Song about grass, cows, beef, condiments, fries or fast food

***

Lots of prompt words for this SLS, so I guess we just pick one or more. I like fast food, and I like burgers, so here are a couple of songs I like. The first one is fun to hear, and the next one is from Charlie Pride. He always has good songs, and I’ve seen him in concert at least 3 times in the past. My husband also got to play golf with him too, when he was in town, and got his autograph on the scorecard.

***

I’ve heard a lot of Bob Rivers Christmas parody songs, and had a couple of tapes of them, a long time ago. They are pretty funny, so I was happy to find this one about cooking out on the grill, as it fits the theme today.

Most all of his fun songs are done to the tune of popular and well known songs.

There will probably be a lot of people cooking BBQ out on the grill today, including us here. 🙂

From the Wiki article:

Robert Rivers (born July 7, 1956 in Branford, Connecticut) is a retired American rock and roll radio on-air personality in the Pacific Northwest, as well as a prolific producer and songwriter of parody songs, most famous for his Christmas song parodies.[1] His album Twisted Christmas was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.[2]

Rivers’ last regular radio program, The Bob Rivers Show with Bob, Spike and Joe, was broadcast on Seattle oldies station KJR-FM until August 8, 2014, ending a 25-year run in the Seattle market.[3]

Rivers played keyboards for a cover band affiliated with the show, Spike and the Impalers,[4][5][6] until 2015.

***

“Burgers on the Grill,” by Bob Rivers, was recorded in 2003. This one is done to the tune of the Doors song, “Riders on the Storm”.

Riders On The Storm – Doors)

Burgers on the grill
Burgers on the grill
I’ve really had my fill
Of burgers on the grill
When the relatives go home
I’m stuck with chicken bones
And burgers on the grill

There’s a steak tip on the coals
It fell down through the holes
And now it’s caught on fire
Smells like a funeral pyre
I was tryin’ to get it back
But it’s turnin’ pretty black
Steak tip on the coals

Yeah!

Wiener on the foil
The skin begins to boil
I dropped it in the soil
I thought that it was spoiled
So I washed it with a hose
And fed it to Aunt Rose
Wiener on the foil

Burgers on the grill
Burgers on the grill

The Last DJ – Song Lyric Sunday – Music Appreciation

Buy-A-Musical Instrument Day

***

May 24 – Song that expresses appreciation for music, singing, or listening to the radio

***

Whatever form your enjoying music takes, whether by playing an instrument, singing, or just listening on the radio or tv, it’s good to appreciate it, and also the artists and people who present it to us. I do listen to the radio every day, the old fashioned way I suppose, by transistor radios. I have a lot of them, plus regular radios. If one station isn’t playing what I want to hear, I keep turning the knob to find one I like. I appreciate the DJs who work at the radio stations that bring the music into our houses, too.

Here’s a song that wonders what will happen when even the DJs are silenced.

***

***

I read on the Wiki article that this song was banned from lots of Clearchannel radio stations because they thought it was ‘anti radio’.  … But I think he was just telling it like it is, that our freedom of speech is slowly being taken away, and in this song the  DJ was not playing by their rules. It’s better explained in the below link.

“The Last DJ”, by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is a 2002 single from his album of the same name. It was written by Tom Petty and is on the Warner Bros. label.  Read the Wiki article about it here

***

Well you can’t turn him into a company man
You can’t turn him into a whore

And the boys upstairs just don’t understand anymore
Well the top brass don’t like him talking so much
And he won’t play what they say to play
And he don’t wanna change what don’t need to changeAnd there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey hey hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJAnd some folks say they’re gonna hang him so high
Cause you just can’t do what he did
There’s some things you just can’t put in the minds of those kids

As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs wanna see
How much you’ll pay for what you used to get for free(Chorus)Well he got a new station down in Mexico
And some times it will kinda come in
And I’ll bust a move
And remember how it was back then

FOWC- Plush

Standard

FOWC – Plush

For Fandango’s challenge:

FOWC With Fandango — Plush

***

“Plush”, by StoneTemple Pilots

I like this song. In reading about it, it seems it is loosely based on a true story of trying to find a missing or kidnapped person who was later found deceased. So sad.

Here’s an interesting fact to me…my daughter had a pet rabbit a long time ago, and she named it Weiland, after the singer in this band.

***

This video is an acoustic version, performed on Headbangers Ball (MTV), which I like a lot. The official video is good, but I was detracted from the lyrics and the meanings of the song by the craziness of that video.

“Plush”, by Stone Temple Pilots, was released as a single from their album, “Core”, in 1993. It was written by Scott Weiland and Eric Kratz, and is on the Atlantic label.

[Verse 1]
And I feel that time’s a wasted go
So where ya goin’ ’til tomorrow?
And I see that these are lies to come
So would you even care?[Pre-Chorus]
And I feel it
And I feel it[Chorus]
Where ya goin’ for tomorrow?
Where ya goin’ with the mask I found?
And I feel, and I feel when the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?
[Verse 2]
And I feel, so much depends on the weather
So is it rainin’ in your bedroom?
And I see, that these are the eyes of disarray
So would you even care?[Pre-Chorus]
And I feel it
And she feels itWhere ya goin’ for to tomorrow?
Where ya goin’ with the mask I found?
And I feel, and I feel when the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?
[Bridge]
When the dogs do find her
Got time, time, to wait for tomorrow
To find it, to find it, to find it
When the dogs do find her
Got time, time, to wait for tomorrow
To find it, to find it, to find it[Chorus]
Where ya goin’ for tomorrow?
Where ya goin’ with the mask I found?
And I feel, and I feel when the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?
[Outro]
When the dogs do find her
Got time, time, to wait for tomorrow
To find it, to find it, to find it
When the dogs do find her
Got time, time, to wait for tomorrow
To find it, to find it, to find it
To find it

May 10, 2026 – Song about a bike, asparagus, strawberries, eggs, mental health, the elderly or the military

***

I heard this song a long time ago and liked it a lot. I’d never seen the video (that I remember) until today, though. It tells and shows scenes of the lyrics, of a girl remembering her first summer love, visiting her grandparents, and then in later years going back to find things were different now, therefore her memories are bittersweet.

“Strawberry Wine”, by Deana Carter, is a single from her 1996 album, “Did I Shave My Legs For This”. It was written by Matraca Berg, and Gary Harrison, and is on the Capitol Nashville label. This song won several awards which are listed in the Wiki article here

He was working through collegeOn my grandpa’s farmI was thirsting for knowledgeAnd he had a carYeah, I was caught somewhere between a woman and a childOne restless summer we found love growing wildOn the banks of the river on a well beaten pathIt’s funny how those memories they lastLike strawberry wine and seventeenThe hot July moon saw everythingMy first taste of love, oh bittersweetGreen on the vineLike strawberry wine
I still rememberWhen thirty was oldAnd my biggest fear was Septemberwhen he had to goA few cards and letters and one long distance callWe drifted away like the leaves in the fallBut year after year I come back to this placeJust to remember the tasteOf strawberry wine and seventeenThe hot July moon saw everythingMy first taste of love, whoa-oh, bittersweetGreen on the vineLike strawberry wine
The fields have grown over nowYears since they’ve seen the plowThere’s nothing time hasn’t touchedIs it really him or the loss of my innocence?I’ve been missing so much
Yeah
Strawberry wine and seventeenThe hot July moon saw everythingMy first taste of love, whoa-oh bittersweetAnd green on the vineLike strawberry wine and seventeenThe hot July moon saw everythingMy first taste of love, oh, bittersweetAnd green on the vineLike strawberry wine

Cher – May 20 (1946)

For the prompt today, I chose to feature Cher. She is a super talented singer and actress who has entertained us for many years.

Here is the Wiki article all about her and her accomplishments, which are many.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cher

**One of the best-selling music artists in history, Cher has sold over 100 million records and is the only solo artist with number-one singles on the US Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades (1960s–2020s)

***

The song I chose to play from her is “Believe”.

It’s one of my favorite Cher songs, and I have to sing along every time I hear it

***

“Believe”, by Cher, can be found on her 1998 album of the same name. It was written by

It is on the Warner Bros. label. Find out all about this song at the below link.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Believe_(Cher_song)

One thing that was mentioned, is the use of Auto-Tune on her voice. It makes a funny sound, and they weren’t sure it should be left in the song, the effect of the slide between her voice and the auto tune, but she said to leave it in.    I like this part a lot, myself.  It featured a pioneering use of the audio processing software Auto-Tune to distort her vocals, which was widely imitated and became known as the “Cher effect”

The song video is set in a nightclub, and she is both a singer on stage, and also an otherworldly person giving advice to the people, about being strong, moving on after a break-up, etc.

[Intro]
(After love, after love)
(After love, after love)
(After love, after love)
(After love, after love)
(After love, after love)
(After love, after love)[Verse 1]
No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside
And I can’t break through
There’s no talking to you
It’s so sad that you’re leaving
It takes time to believe it
But after all is said and done
You’re gonna be the lonely one, oh[Chorus]
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
“I really don’t think you’re strong enough, no”
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
“I really don’t think you’re strong enough, no”
[Verse 2]
What am I supposed to do
Sit around and wait for you?

Well, I can’t do that
And there’s no turning back
I need time to move on
I need love to feel strong
‘Cause I’ve had time to think it through
And maybe I’m too good for you, oh[Chorus]
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
“I really don’t think you’re strong enough, no”
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
“I really don’t think you’re strong enough, no”
[Bridge]
Well, I know that I’ll get through this
‘Cause I know that I am strong
And I don’t need you anymore
Oh, I don’t need you anymore
Oh, I don’t need you anymore
No, I don’t need you anymore

Here is a song about feeding the trees, which is a good thing to do. Not exactly what this song is about, but sort of. The songwriter says it’s a metaphor for carrying on traditions in family, and of a tree where relatives are buried under, and to pay respects.

I thought sure I’d posted this song not long ago for a challenge or something, but couldn’t find it. Spent way too long looking for it!
