SOCS – Chickens & Eggs

For Linda’s challenge:

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS June 29, 2024

***

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “chicken or egg.” Use the “which came first” conundrum in your post, whether about the chicken and the egg or about a real-life situation that fits the question. Or just talk about chickens and eggs! Enjoy!

***

Who really knows which came first, the chicken or the egg? Who really knows why the chicken crossed the road? Why are chickens so funny?

I think chickens are funny. Some are funny looking, and some do funny things, and sound funny, too. I smile when I see a chicken, either real or a toy one.

Here’s some things about chickens my cousin raises, plus some photos of chickens and eggs.

***

***

My cousin, Mike, raises exotic chickens.

He pretty much makes pets of them all, and collects their eggs to sell.

The first photo shows a large black & white chicken with an elaborate all black feathery head-dress. He calls this one Silver. I think it is a Polish Silver breed of chicken.

The next photo is Mike holding Silver.

The next photo is another kind of chicken he is holding. He calls this one Houdie. Could be because it is a breed of chicken called Houdan.  It is a large black and white chicken, with it’s head-dress of feathers of black & white.

Very cool chickens! 🙂

Hahaha what a strange combination of photos for this one. Only 5 – so weird, and no kind of connection between them at all. Here’s what the photos are:

  • the blue sky is orange and purpley/white  whispy clouds above a bare branched tree at the bottom
  • an orange tomato shaped pin cusion with lots of straight pins stuck in
  • my letter B wax stamp for sealing envelopes
  • three horse statues up on a shelf
  • two chickens at my cousin’s farm yard – one is black & white, one is orange & white

Chickens & Eggs – SOCS – Over

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS May 13, 2023

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “starts with over.” Find a word that starts with “over” and use it for your prompt. Enjoy!

Overachiever

Over-productive

Over-easy/medium/hard

I’m thinking eggs, here.  I’m thinking chickens, here.

Here’s a photo of a double yolk egg we were cooking in the frying pan. We get a lot of these. I did read once that it occurs more often in the jumbo sized eggs, and that is what we buy. Then the reflection in the pan looks like a smile, below the double yolk ‘eyes’. haha!

I like my eggs fried over medium, where the white part is cooked through, and the yellow yolk is partially cooked but still runny.

Now what about the chickens that lay the double yolk eggs. Are they overachievers or over-producers? I doubt they even know it happens. Their egg is just like every other egg to them.

Here’s a chicken, and a flat of eggs. These were from my cousins chickens. He has all kinds of them, and they have all kinds of eggs, big or small, white or brown, blue or speckled.

***

Oh, before I go on to something else, here’s a thing I remember about chickens. One of my very first paying jobs was working in an office of a manufacturing company that made watering systems for chickens (and hogs). They also made machines that graded eggs, into small, medium, large, extra large, and jumbo. They also made egg candling equipment. It was interesting working there.

🙂

Happy Saturday! We finally have some rain maybe all day today – yay!

Two different cities with the same name, which I think is pretty funny.

I was just thinking the other day about some cities we’ve been to. Quite a few have been cities of the same name, in different places. Here’s some I’ve visited. Have you been to any double cities?

  • Paris, France and Paris, Texas (also the Paris Hotel, in Las Vegas)
  • Las Vegas, Nevada and Las Vegas, New Mexico
  • Texarkana, Texas, and Texarkana, Arkansas
  • Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas

Neighbor Houses # 6

These are my thoughts and memories of the houses in our neighborhood when I was a kid.

***

Kennedy’s House

This is the house that was right next door to ours to the west. A small white framed house. It had a large front yard, and a fairly big back yard. In the front yard the older lady (portly, long white hair kept in a braid) would grow some vegetables. The back yard had a pen for raising chickens.

This lady would come over to our house a lot, and would babysit me and my sister from time to time. She had her grandchildren come visit her, and they would come to play in our front yard. We liked digging in the dirt, making roads for our little toy cars, trucks, and horses to go around.

One time I’d been to her house and was carrying a big glass bowl she’d borrowed from my mom, back to our house and I tripped on her porch. It was just a slatted wooden pallet kind of deal. Anyway, the bowl hit my mouth and broke my bottom tooth in half. So I had to go to the dentist where I got a cap put on the tooth. It was silver, and I had that silver tooth for many years, even after I got married and had my own kids. Finally I had the tooth pulled.

Another memory is that she gave us Christmas presents, and this one year was a big set of those Little Golden Books. I loved those books! 🙂

Weekly Prompts Photo Challenge – Edit

Standard

Weekly Photo Prompt – Edit

Photo Challenge Edit

***

Here’s what Sue has asked us for this week’s prompt:

Do you edit your photographs before inserting into your blog posts?

How often do you pre-edit and by that I mean do you take notice of everything in the background before you take your photo; do you stage manage your shots or is the stack of dirty dishes in the background still there when you finally showcase the picture to the world?

***

My answer to this is yes, I do some editing on my photos. I only have my phone as a camera, and am usually in a hurry to snap a shot. So, when I go back to look at them, I have to make a few changes.

I’ll crop out any background miscellaneous that isn’t in my main idea.

I’ll enlarge the main part of the photo I want to show.

I’ll try what filters I have on my phone to see which looks brighter. Sometimes the original is shaded, or muddy looking, so it helps to use a different one.

Sometimes I’ll rotate the photo, to get a better angle.

I’ve never gotten any special apps for photo editing, and should look into doing that someday.

And yes, I do sometimes stage my photos, by setting what I want to take a picture of in a neutral place, using a towel, or some paper behind the object. Then It’s either just the one thing, or a grouping of relevant things to make an interesting photo.

These next ones are a couple I set up.

A green pear and a red pear sitting on a white towel in the first photo.

The second one  I set up on my old school desk, with colorful paper (orange & green stripes) for the toy fuzzy chickens to stand on. For the background it was a piece of paper that looks like pink and blue tie dye. The words peace – love are stick on foam letters in red, green, yellow, orange, and purple.

***

***

Here’s some  photos in the original, and then the edited ones:

I wanted to showcase the yellow car for a color challenge, and didn’t need the whole line of cars in the parking lot, or the bushes in the foreground. I’d taken this one at a little distance, so the edit helped, I think.

***

***

This one I wanted to feature the door with many paned glass windows. I zoomed the photo in to make it larger, and also to cut out the green lawn and house roof, and most of the bush next to the door. I also lightened it up a bit to show the white curtains.
