Well, I learned something today. I’ve been pronouncing a word wrong for as long as I can remember. The word is ‘decibel’. I’ve always said ‘debicel’. The word means the measurement of sound waves – how loud or soft a sound is. Yes, I looked it up.

Anyway, I’ve heard some really loud sounds before.

I’ve heard the loud booms of cannon fire that shakes the house and rattles the windows. This was when we lived on the Army base at Ft. Hood. The soldiers were way out in the field learning and practicing with the cannons. Still, even from far away from our house, it was so loud.

I’ve been to really loud concerts – enjoyed every minute of the amplified music.

One day my daughter and I were screaming as loud as we could, and still couldn’t hear ourselves. That’s because a large military cargo plane was flying over the house.

A strange noise you wouldn’t think would be all that loud is the sound of locusts – thousands of locusts – screeching or chirping or whatever it is they do. Hour after hour with the noise, and it was loud with so many of the insects doing their thing at the same time. It was funny, that when they took a short break, it was all at the same time, too. In that sudden silence our ears would be ringing just like if we’d been at a rock concert. They can sure amp up the decibels.

So, I hope this weekend you don’t have to live with many of those booming, rattling, screaming, screeching, chirping, ringing, and amped up decibels.

Here’s some of my key chain collection. I know I have more somewhere, just didn’t want to dig them out.

There are so many interesting ones you can get, and pretty much about any subject or topic.

There are those you can purchase at concerts, and museums. You can find them for sale at airport gift shops in all cities (along with magnets), and tourist attraction sites. There are give-away key chains, too, that companies hand out. There are useful ones, such as bottle openers, and hooks to hang on a lady’s purse.

Whatever you’re interested in you can probably find a key chain for it.

  • shiny blue key that is also a bottle opener
  • a plastic orange advertising one shaped like the number one
  • a red and yellow electric guitar with flames (the ring is broken off on this one)
  • a Ninja? with a red mask on, and wearing white outfit

RDP – Ragtag Daily Prompt – Fair

We have a fair that comes to town every year at the end of September. It has all the usual fun things to do and see as most any fair, such as amusement rides of all kinds, carnival games, side shows, and good food to eat. There are also lots of stalls with interesting things to buy.

When I was in elementary school, we’d get free tickets to go to the fair. Here’s one of mine.

There are also livestock and flower, and farmer’s harvest exhibits to see. There are separate buildings for these, and also a merchant’s building. In there you can see all kinds of vendors selling their newest products. Another building is for crafts that people have made, like art, cakes,and canning foods. Antiques & relics displays are one of my favorite to look at. I’ve even entered some of mine, and won a few ribbons. Plus they pay you if you win a ribbon. It’s just a small amount, but fun to get.

One time I had a job making muzzles for sheep. The lady who showed her sheep in the fair used the ones I made.

There is also a building for music concerts. There are usually several well known entertainers who perform on successive nights at the fair. I’ve seen Charlie Pride a few times, and also Dwight Yoakum there.

On the off season, at the fair grounds, they would turn one of the buildings into a skating rink. It was called Fairpark Skating Rink. I’d go there every Friday night with my friends, to have fun skating, and listening to music. This is one place that Buddy Holly played his music, in the very early days.

We haven’t gone to the fair in a few years, though. Still, at this time of year it just seems like fair weather, when the days are hot, but you can tell there is a change coming toward Autumn, and it’s my favorite time of the year.

The song I chose for this week is, “Cowboy Take Me Away”, by the Dixie Chicks. It was released in 1999, on the “Fly” album/Monument label, and written by Martie Seidel and Marcus Hummon.

I must say that I love all the Dixie Chicks songs, so it was hard to pick just one. You could say that I’m partial to the Dixie Chicks, because we have been long time friends with the extended family of Natalie Maines. My mother-in-law, and Natalie’s grandmother were very good friends from way back. My father-in-law also worked with her grandfather for many years. My husband was friends with their sons, who also have a singing career, and are known as the Maines Brothers Band.

We visited many times at their house, and her grandmother visited at my house, too. They all have passed on now, however. (RIP) During our visits at their house, my girls and all of their grandkids, including Natalie, would be running around the house playing. We even stayed the night over there once.

So, excuse the name-dropping, but I’m happy to have known this wonderful family.

I’ve also been lucky enough to have seen the Dixie Chicks in concert twice now. Their performances are excellent! 🙂

“Please Introduce Yourself”

Hello! I am the nice lady’s violin. I’ve lived with her for many years. She learned to play music on my strings when she was in the 6th grade of elementary school. Over the years of her schooling, all the way through High School, she took the classes of Orchestra. We played many concerts together, with other students. She also took me to special competitions, where we were judged and received a score. We did well!

Sometimes the nice lady still takes me out of my case and plays a few tunes…to the cat’s dismay… Oh, well, it feels good to be taken care of and loved for all these years. 🙂
