Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge – One Day at the Olympics

Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge – One Day

One day in the fall,  September 1, 1972, was beautiful. My husband and I were living in Germany, courtesy of the Army, at the time. We’d been invited, by friends, to attend the Olympics, which were being held in Munich. They had tickets to see some events, but had no one to babysit their little girl…a few months old…could we come and watch her for them, while they went into the Olympic Staduim. We could, and we just walked around the grounds, enjoying the sights.

As we walked along, with the baby in one of the back carriers for little ones, a person came up to us, handed us a couple of tickets, and said they couldn’t stay to attend the event. We could have their tickets, if we wanted them, at no cost. Well, ok, this is cool, we thought. We hurried over to the stadium, and got to see some of the track and field competitions. There was a huge crowd making lots of noise, but we found a seat. Afterwards, we met up with our friends, went to eat in another huge food area, bought some souvenirs, then drove back home, to Furth/Nuremberg.

Little did we know, that less than one week later, the world would be shocked at what happened on September 5-6, 1972, right there in the Olympic Village, close to where we’d just been.

The Palestinian group, Black September, took hostages of the Israeli Olympic athletes, and others, and ultimately massacred all seventeen of them.

House # 5 – Germany

House # 5 – Germany

***

The next house we moved into was in Germany. We lived out in the city of Furth/Nuremberg in an apartment building where mostly U S service people lived, though not all.

Our little apartment was I think was on the second or maybe third floor. It had a tiny kitchen, a tiny bathroom, and one large room for the living room bedroom combination.

I don’t have a picture of the outside of the building, but this first photo I took while looking out our window to the Red Cross building across the street.

This photo was taken inside our place. I’d decorated a little bit for Christmas with some evergreen sprigs, and there were some wrapped presents on a piece of furniture. The walls were striped wall paper.

I liked the huge windows that opened outward. I don’t think there were any screens on them, but I remember sitting on the window ledge in summer, and also putting some food out there to keep frozen when it was winter.

A fun thing we did a lot of, was called junking. Certain streets on certain days were able to put out their unwanted items to the curb for pick up. It was tradition for people to come by picking up for free anything they could use.

Most times I’d walk to the post exchange store, or the commissary for shopping, and other times I’d take a taxi. I didn’t drive while there, but we had a small car.

One scary thing that happened was while at the PX, there was a bomb scare and we had to evacuate the building while it was checked out. Turned out a false alarm, but still scary.

Also while there we were able to go to the 1972 Olympics in Munich. These photos are of the Olympic tower and some flags, and more flags of all nations.

We just happened to be there a few days before the massacre in the Olympic village happened. So horrible!

We also went to the memorial grounds and museum of the concentration camp during the Holocaust at Dachau. It was so horrible to think such things happened in the past. Very sobering and sad to be standing on those same grounds. I don’t know if it happens to others who visit, but for me I could sense the presence of spirits all around.

A to Z BLOG CHALLENGE 2016 – LETTER O 4bd62ad9-ea74-4273-967b-7c426c911c61 IMG_2356

Hi – and Happy Monday!

Today we have the letter O to work with. Let’s see what the Mystery Box Chickens have unwrapped for us today. 🙂

Letter O is for…”Ob-li-di, ob-la-da” (Life Goes On)

The Beatles song, “Ob-li-di, ob-la-da” (Life Goes On), was written by Paul McCartney, and released in 1968. John Lennon was also mentioned as co-writer, but that is questionable, as he’d made it known he didn’t care for the song.

The title was said to have come from an acquaintance of Paul’s, the Nigerian conga player, Jimmy Scott-Enuakpor. He declared that it was an exclusive family saying, and it should be acknowledged as such. Paul disagreed, believing anyone could say the words, which meant life goes on. There were legal actions taken, resulting in the matter taken care of. (source: Wikipedia)

A fun fact – the song was used as the opening theme to a TV drama show, that ran from 1989-1993, called “Life Goes On”.

However the song came to be recorded, I like it. Do you?

Letter O is for…Olympics

In the summer of 1972, the Olympic Games were held in Munich, Germany. On the 5th and 6th of September, the Palestinian group, Black September, took 11 Israeli athletes hostage, among others, and massacred them all.

I was there. Actually, my husband, some friends, and I had gone to the Olympics a few days before the hostage situation took place. We enjoyed our day there, but later, when we heard what had happened, it was shocking to think we had been so close to it all.

For the longer story of our visit, I wrote a piece for the A to Z Blog Challenge a couple of years ago on here. To read the story, please click the link here
