Word of the Day – Rainfall

Rainfall

Deluge, flooding, wild wind, thunder & lightning. We had all of these yesterday afternoon. A thunderstorm popped up over the city with a boom of thunder and lightning and then came the heavy rainfall, flooding the streets, and wind whipping the trees all around.  All this happened within an hour or less, then it was gone.

The rain was so heavy we couldn’t even see across the street at times, just solid sheets of rain. I heard we had about an inch and a half of rainfall. When it rains that much here, it has nowhere to go unless it runs down to the lake. Our street I guess slants that way, so our street becomes a river for awhile. We were under a flood warning for a little while, too.

This actually is typical for this time of year. We here in west TX  get the monsoonal flow coming up from Mexico and the Pacific area which effects TX and NM.

The wind was clocked at about 70 miles per hour too, and the trees were whipping their leaves all around. It blew over our wooden bench under the tree, too.

Funny, as this is the start of the new school year, this season as I said is typical. When I was a kid we always were having rain. I remember wearing new school shoes, and getting them ruined from wading in high water. Same for my kids, having to wade through high water to get into and out of school day.  Yep, typical, but we need the rain, as most of the year we get very little.  We get dry and walls of dust haboobs!
