§257 My sermon

October 26, 2008

I preached yesterday about the topic I decided 15 days ago:

https://thatdudeyouknow.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/%c2%a7241-my-sermon-genesis-chapter-2/

I was the first preacher in our little congregation to use a powerpoint presentation for the sermon (I’m the young hip preacher, they’d expect that). Whenever I have time I’ll write a summary of the sermon and upload the presentation (it’s in Hebrew of course).

Or maybe I’lll start another blog… “the sermon blog” or something… We’ll see. I still do have my drafts for all the previous sermons I’ve had. Let’s see… this was my… fourth!

Ever.

§219 Translations to the original

September 8, 2008

I don’t have time to read or to write blogs nowadays. But just a little thing that doesn’t take too much time… here are some stuff I dug up on youtube. Well known songs, translated to their real original languages!

We will start with Aladdin in Arabic!

And then we have Hercules in Greek

Then two French songs. Aristocats and Beauty and the Beast:

Then two songs in German. Well, it’s more general European folklore, but the stories are most known for being written down by the Grimm brothers, so we’ll say it’s German. Snow White and Cinderella.

And of course, the Lion King in Zulu – this is the only version of the song where the entire song, including the chant in the beginning, is in the same language!

From far south, we’re going far north – here’s the Little Mermaid in Danish!

And off to the Jungle – here’s the Jungle book in Hindi!

And, as the last one, I’ve saved the best (and the only non-Disney) – here’s Prince of Egypt in Hebrew! The voice of Yocheved (Moses’ mother) is Ofra Haza (may she rest in peace) – the same as the voice in the original English.

§210 Multilingualism, Georgia and Accounting

August 11, 2008

I have continued to ponder over a few different life philosophies. I just need the time to blog about it. Another time. I will compare Disney movies, bible and sumerian philosophy. Stay tuned.

I received on a discussion group in Hebrew on facebook some criticism for my ideas in the last post. This about not consuming too much. Someone said that our exaggerated consumation is what keeps the third world factories in business. If we stop, the third world worker will be unemployed. If he has bad conditions, they need to form worker unions.

Your thoughts?

My wife blogged about the advantages of multilingualism. I added a bunch of advantages in a comment.

I am still learning excel functions. I didn’t know there were more than SUM… There are hundreds of them!

Anyway… nothing special. My work is going well, I’m slowly but surely learning to be an accountant.

Anyone has any clue what’s going on in Georgia? I’m a bit confused with all South Ossetian and Russia and everything. I hear propaganda from here and there and based on my knowledge from the Middle East I don’t trust the newspapers a bit. So is it big evil Georgia against poor little South Ossetia or is it big evil Russia against poor little Georgia? Russia points finger claiming “Georiga started it”. Why would they attack a super power like Russia? I find that hard to believe. And why is it so impossible to google this? Because those americans have a STATE named Georgia which makes it IMPOSSIBLE to search for the country. You couldn’t think of a better name for a state? Let’s keep going, name all the states after oher countries in the world. Make googling impossible.

I did find a few Georgian official websites. They’re all not working. Shot down by the Russians…?

§204 Kindergarten, sleepy, Africa

August 3, 2008

Yes! We finally received the kindergarten papers! Both kids in the same kindergarten this year. Starting September 1st! Woohoo!

I’ve been disgustingly tired all day. On the way to work I fell asleep with my head hanging out in the aisle, so the man who sat across pushed my head back. At least I didn’t fall asleep on the one who sat next to me. On the bus home I sat and fell asleep again. As I almost got home I heard someone say “Tuvia!” It was Jerusalem Gypsy who sat across and laughed at me. We talked about her latest blog posts. She’s not going to do the reality show thing. Could’ve been quite funny though… Me laugh.

Now I must study. And comment some blog posts. And shower. It’s hot outside. After one day I feel disgustingly disgusting.

Efraim’s birthday was great, anyway. One of the things I did with him (done it before) is to watch Lion King songs on youtube in various languages. Hebrew, Swedish, English, French, German, Zulu, Arabic, Norwegian, Danish. Lately I’ve discovered this multilanguage thing. You can type the name of any well known Disney song (including ALL of the songs in the Lion King) and add the word “multilanguage” and you get clips that talented young people with a lot of spare time have made. The Disney songs we grew up with in all kinds of languages – the same clip, but change of language every sentence. Sometimes with full subtitles, and sometimes only stating which language it is. It’s incredible. And it’s a great way to show the kids how many different languages there are.

Of course only around 20 different languages are represented each time. Not much against all 5000 languages there are… but still.

Question of the day: Which language is it you hear at the very beginning of “The Lion King”? You know, that African chant when the sun goes up? Is it Kiswahili? Zulu? Setswana? It can’t be Xhosa, I’d recognize the click noises… I know there are some click noises in Zulu too, but they’re more rare there. Anyway, I’m getting a bit off track. Or am I just trying to show off my sad little piece of knowledge of African languages? It’s a bit silly and hypocrite of me I think. I mean, if an African knew as little about European languages as I know about African I’d see him as an illiterate. Are we western people expecting others to know more about us than we are ready to learn about them? (Americans, you don’t have to answer that, we already know you do that).

I just realised I haven’t finished my blogs with an italic comment in a long time

§168 Quickies

March 10, 2008

Too often I’ve been blogging looong posts and therefore not been able to write as often as I would like. So this is it. I’m gonna have to start to post quickies. Like this one. And I’m gonna have a personal goal – everyday I will make sure something happens that is meaningful enough to be mentioned in the blog. Aha! Now there’s a way to give yourself a meaning in life…

We had a great time in Haifa with grandpa. My sister is getting married on April 14th. My parents and 2 brothers are coming to Israel for the wedding. I haven’t seen them for 2 years!

Today I bought a plastic drawer cabinet for the bathroom, and I’m going to start studying again. I’ve been taking a break from that a few days (I’m a week ahead in any case). But with all the wedding and everything I might as well make sure I’m a few steps ahead.

Other than that I am wondering if the Hebrew word “mechabdi” (“the one who respects me”) should be seen as a verb in present singular masculine tense with a objective pronoun in first person singular, or if it rather is a singular masculine noun with a possesive pronoun in first person singular.

I’ve also been thinking of what happened here. An israeli arab killed those people at the yeshiva. A israeli citizen. I work with these people. They’re all around me. I try not to be biased, and not say that “all arabs are terrorists”, because they’re not. Most are not. But when the Gaza people cheer in the street because innocent people have been killed – what is that? We’ve never done that! Have you ever seen cheering jewish crowds over the killed civilians in Gaza? On the contrary IDF appologizes. Civilians are not IDF’s targets. Also when the supporters of the arab soccer team from Sachnin booh-whistles during the silent minute for the killed ones during the soccer game against Beitar Jerusalem – I get mad. Aren’t they proving they’re all with this terrorist? These citizens? These israelis? These people I work with? I know not all of them are like this. But I can’t help wondering if one of them wouldn’t stab me in the back if he had the chance.

This wasn’t quickie enough. I’ll get better, I promise.
