The Woodland Celebration

Nestled within the forest clearing, the woodland creatures were busy preparing for a special event. From behind a tree I watched in amazement as they worked together. From the small house tables, chairs, and decorations were brought outside. The sweet aroma of cakes and cookies filled the air. Sunflowers were cut and placed within vases, adorning the tables. I watched as they sang and played as the scene formed before me. Someone was going to be surprised later today at the woodland celebration.

Silently she leaned against the hood of their small VW Bug, watching as he carefully placed each item within his new found space. Careful to not make a sound, knowing that the slightest giggle would break his concentration she amused herself with is fussiness. She carefully recalled all the comments he had made while she unpacked boxes and laid intricate knick knacks upon shelves and fresh linens on tables. Each comment made more amusing now that it was he was carefully unpacking and moving items from one spot to another because they needed to be in the right spot. Yet, while he worked at filling his space she did not make a sound, knowing that her amusement would be lost in the moment.

For Toby

No matter how old we are or where we are in ours lives, each of us has had a Toby. Their name may be different and they may be a different species of pet, but we all have our Toby. The little creatures we adopt into our lives and set roost in our hearts. Their cute little faces covered in fur or feather light up when we enter a room or return from a day at work. Their love for us never ends and their moments of comfort help ease a rough situation. In the end we would do anything for little Toby’s to see that they are well taken care of, after all they are our adopted children who love us with every ounce of their being unconditionally.

The Powder Room

Standing back, she looked around the one room she had finished decorating; the room she would spend a good deal of her morning preparing for the day. Hearing the small quiet mews, she looked over and smiled at the kitten giving its approval. The powder room was well decorated and cozy for those days after a long days work, or for those mornings where a few extra minutes of pampering were well needed.

The Dressmakers Dolls

Usually the young dressmaker, could be found in her little shop lost in new orders for dresses that the women of the village wore to special events, but for the last few days business had been slow for the dressmaker. Needing to find something new to help keep her business running, the young dressmaker took up a new hobby; one that had the little girls of the town whispering about. She had figured it would not be to difficult to make her dresses in a smaller size then what she was use to, after all she was already making gowns for newborns. Before she knew it she was making dolls for the all the little girls, who were making requests for dresses for themselves and their dolls (so they could match).

Having spent many days working long hours and coming home exhausted, only to find herself sinking into a deep slumber upon the couch, she woke on her day off late into the day and ready to enjoy a day of solitude with long lost friends. She savoured the adventurous stories they would share with each other; the tales of far of places, long lost loves, and finding the perfect ending to a hard day. Her friends sat waiting her arrival, listening to the on coming foot falls as she drew closer to the coveted spot near the window with the perfect amount of natural light and cool breeze to fill the small space. Only one problem stood in their way, she could not find her glasses so she could dive into the pages new adventures and old favourites.

The Quiet Guest Room

I stood in the entrance way to the carefully decorated spare room. My grandmother, busied herself inside cleaning the room as if someone had been in it. I smiled watching her clear a bit of dust off the wall hangings, light the small candles, and freshen the flowers. I watched on as she carefully laid fresh linens on the bed and fluff the pillows. I knew though that no one had slept in the guest room since I was younger. The room remained quiet in hopes that one day someone would come bounding in and ask my grandmother about the toys that filled the room, and why the hippo was upon the wall. I watched as my grandmother set to work on the quiet guest room humming to herself. Ever so often a smile would creep on her small mouth and she would ask how long it had been since I last spent the night; she knew thought that I was just there for a visit today, it had been this way since my own children had been born. Yet she remained hopeful that I would change my mind one of these visits.

The Country Wedding

Nestled outside the ancient building the bride stood watch as the decorators busied themselves with decorating and setup the location. Taking a long slow breath she began to smile as her vision came to life. Most would be bothered by the occasional verbalization from the sleeping dog or from by the gathering chicks as the grass was rustled causing the little seeds to fall to the ground. She enjoyed the country side; she found it soothing and relaxing and the animals that roamed the land made her smile. Eventually she felt someone take her hand and she gave it a squeeze and flashed her fiance a smile, tomorrow they would be married and a new journey would begin.

Where Love Overflows

Wanting a quiet place to call her own the little girl went to work carefully dragging her favourite items from within their home in hopes that her mom would not catch her. The carefully selected couch cushions, throw rug, and the blanket from her parents bed were the first items to disappear. The throw pillows and small table where she planned on putting her favourite book to read were next. Silently she came and went without much notice as she pieced together her little spot by the waterfall. Stopping to get a snack, she smiled at her mom as she ate the cookies on the plate. She watched as her mom disappeared from the kitchen and came back after a short while. Not much was exchanged between the pair as she trotted off to finish her project. She dragged her favourite book outside to read while she surrounded herself with the sounds of the waterfall and nature, only to find some new toys surrounding her little spot of quiet. She smiled as her little heart filled with her mothers love.

Paint could be smelt drifting down the small narrow hallway, letting the others know that something was taking place in the small room at the back of the house. Usually you could hear the whirl of the sewing machine as a new vision came to life. Today though, the medium was paint and the inspiration was the view out the small window in the ceiling as the clouds drifted lazily in the sky. Those who snuck a peak from time to time, could hear the slowly sigh as the individual relaxed within the art room.
