JustDave's Notes:
Not Sure If This One Originally Was Done By Draftervoi But I Think It May Be.

Original Notes:
Sourced from pre-FM double compact disc of Westwood One Superstar Concert Series SS # 97-30. Also included is a short broadcast promo.

This is the sourced from the 97-30 broadcast Pre-FM, but is not the complete show. It is missing several songs including "I Was Brought To My Senses", "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot", "Seven Days", "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying", and "Fragile". The 96-37 Pre-FM is the complete show but the only version I've seen of that seems to be lossy. Could be that 96-37 was actually broadcast from a lossy source. The bootleg "Perfect Night In Houston" may be sourced from 96-37, and - no surprise - is lossy too. This 97-30 Pre-FM is actually lossless. I imported the original tracks from drccds into Audacity and removed the commercials, and tracked everything to split up the songs. I kept the J.J. Jackson speaking parts.

LPs cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning system prior to a flat transfer of the vinyl to CD-r. A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used prior to LP playback on said system. The vinyl has some anomalies on every side. These look like dimples and little air pockets. These particular anomalies could not be removed. The LPs were actually almost unplayable until I used the HumminGuru Ultrasonic cleaner, it really made a huge difference.

LPs cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning system prior to a flat transfer of the vinyl to CD-r. A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used prior to LP playback on said system. This and a couple other records, all boots, were found in the basement of my house when I moved in. They were covered in mildew or mold, which was cleaned by the sonic cleaner. There will still be some snaps but the vinyl is now playable and an enjoyable listen.

It sounds as if side one was tracked by a tape with the player's azimuth out of adjustment. You hear backwards music during the whole side. I was able to remove a lot of it but not all. The tape for side two starts out muffled but clears up halfway through "Duece". The quality of the tape used for the album mars the listening pleasure a little. It's a guilty pleasure. Not sure what the line-up for the Ace Frehley demos. The track "Rock Or Be Rocked" has elements of both "We Got Your Rock" and "Rock Soldiors" from the Frehley's Comet debut. Also not sure which demo sessions for KIϟϟ were used.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone! Wanted to let everyone know that Rosebud and I tested positive for covid-19 the day after Thanksgiving. Rosebud shook it off pretty quick, being back to work in 2 weeks. I however because of my Cancer weekend immune system developed a secondary infection in a salivary gland on the left side of my face. I developed a big liquid filled sore under my left eye that had it almost completely shut. The left side of my face was swollen like I had taken a really hard punch from a Heavy Weight Champion Boxer. It was really serious and I was almost put in hospital by my doctor who decided it might make me sicker (a good choice if you ask me). I have finally gotten some relief, my swelling and sores are gone. However I now have some sagging in my face as if I had a stroke. The left side of my mouth also doesn't work right, sagging when I speak. I have a few more so called "long covid" issues brain fog and exhaustion but feeling better every day. I have some new stuff for everyone coming soon!

Thanks For The Christmas Wishes Hope Everyone Had A Great Holiday!

All Holiday Music Links Are Good & Dave Gets A New Toy!!

Well it's that time of year, Christmas Shopping Season. To help keep you entertained while shopping all of our Holiday Music links have been checked and are operating. Also I have posted 2 more Christmas shows.

I also wanted to share a picture of my soon to arrive Christmas Present I bought myself. My Parents and My Mother In Law always give me money for my birthday and Christmas. I have been saving it for the past few years for something I really wanted. It's a HumminGuru Ultra Sonic Record Cleaner. It uses 40khz ultrasonic waves in a liquid bath to remove contaminates from vinyl records. I first learned of this process about 3 years ago. There is a Record Store that I frequent that uses one on every used record they sell. It arrives in about 3 days along with a new needle for my turntable. I can not wait to try it out on some of my vinyl boots I want to encode. Will let you all know how it works!

Yes! This is a Public Image Ltd. Pre-FM recording! Johnny Rotten was not done assaulting the ears of anyone willing to listen. There are those that love PIL and those who think it is just a bunch of noise. Personally I was more impressed with PIL than The Sex Pistols. Don't get me wrong, I was into the Pistols, still am. I just am a bigger fan of The Plasmatics, Johnny Thunders, Black Flag, Dead Boys, Damned, and The Dead Kennedys.

Rosebud picked a great one for us! This isn't my favorite era of Journey. The first Journey album I bought was Look Into The Future. The last one was Captured. We do however now have the complete Journey catalog. I was not into the Escape release but up to the last gig Journey was one hell of a live band (yes was, they are nowhere near that now, they are not even Journey). Steve Perry was a great front man, one of the best actually. His energy never slipped, I mean the guy never used a mic stand. He picked it up and ran, literally, around the stage like a man possessed. The band itself contained some great live musicians, able to deliver every song to maximum effect every single night.

The flac file set is a little large so I have divided it in 22 parts. Each part will open separately.

Fortunately for Eric Clapton, he played quite a few shows in 1974. Unfortunately for him most of them were recorded. Eric was not in fine shape at the time. Although recovering from heroin addiction he was sinking deeper into alcohol addiction. Many shows Eric was drunk and the performances suffered for it. This however is not one of those shows. Clapton seems to be in just the right mood here. There are some very fine moments during this show. Unfortunately a complete soundboard or audience recording has not surfaced. We have to be satisfied with what we have. A damn fine performance.

I'll tell you I love my Four Tops albums, my original vinyls, which were all presents actually. I used to get a lot of albums and tapes for Christmas and birthdays. Being from the greater Detroit area you either loved Motown or you didn't, I did! I took my parents to there first ever concert, when I was in my 30's. It was a Four Tops and Temptations show. We had like 5th or 6th row something like that. This guy sitting 2 rows up gets up and starts boogieing with the music. An usher promptly came over and made him sit down. A coupe songs later same man gets up and starts to boogie. Same usher comes over and makes him sit down. My Dad stood up and I thought what the hell? My Dad walks over to the man and the usher and says "Do You know how expensive these damn seats were!? If that man wants to dance you better fuckin' let him!" Dad walked back to his seat, the crowd gave my Dad a round of applause and all Four of the Tops thanked my Dad and told everyone to "...boogie and free the booty!" My Mom & Dad still talk about the show!

Disc Break Goes After Track 07 "Like Someone In Love"

Bill Evans - piano
Marc Johnson - bass
Philly Joe Jones - drums
Lee Konitz - alto saxophone (Tracks 07-10)
Stan Getz - tenor saxophone (Track 13)
Curtis Fuller - trombone (Tracks 10 + 13)
Christian Escoudé - guitar (Tracks 10 + 13)

Now there is a long notes section on how this show was recorded and how it was remastered and reconstructed. I didn't post it all here but it is still included on the info text in the art & info folder. There was a bit of work done and the show does really have good sound. Bill Evans is a great pianist, this show is a compilation from a 9 day stint at Arènes et Jardins de Cimiez, in Nice France. Bill's Trio is joined by some great guests including Stan Getz and Lee Konitz. I bet this will make a great listen in the evening with a glass of wine and a bowl of some nice green stuff.

With the popularity of the last Nina Simone show, I sped up my process a little bit to get this one ready for every one. We have had amazing response to that particular boot. We have actually broken some page visit records. For the past 5 days we have had over 3000 page views a day! So here's another great performance from The High Priestess Of Soul...Nina Simone!!

JustDave's Notes:
I ripped the audio with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit a couple track marks and adjust the volume. The applause was louder than the music at times so I tried to even it. No EQ used or re-mastering done. I also deleted about 4 minutes of applause from the end of the show. Filming the long standing ovation makes for great TV imagery, but does nothing for the listening experience. The DVD had lossy audio so it was encoded to MP3 320kbps.

This broadcast has not been released by The Nina Simone Foundation. It is an unofficial release from Immortal Records which releases nothing but bootlegs. However it is being promoted by the Official Home Of Nina Simone. A website that even markets some of Nina's CDs & t-shirts online. It however doesn't market this 0ne, or any DVD for that matter. So we can share it here. It's kind of like Chicago Live In Canada, they don't get anything for it but they say you should buy it to hear it. If you downloaded the last Nina Simone upload you will love this one. It has better sound and a different set list.

Nina Simone's contributions to Jazz, R & B, Gospel & Soul are immeasurable. Her performances of "The Ghetto" and "Strange Fruit" alone are measuring sticks by which all Lady Soul Singers would be compared to for many generations. From Slave Spirituals "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" to Pop Rock Hits "Turn! Turn! Turn!", when Nina sings it...she owns it. There is no real way to describe Nina's influence, nor her genius talent. The only way to describe Nina Simone to anyone really, is to play her music!! So ladies and gentlemen, The High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone!!

Nice sounding recording from Sister Rosetta Tharpe, one of the biggest influences on the many founders of Rock & Roll. Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Chuck Berry & Elvis Presley have said Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a huge influence on them. When asked about Rock & Roll Sister Rosetta has been quoted as saying "Them boys ain't playing nuthin' but rhythm n blues sped up. I been playin' that for ever".

Sly Dunbar - drums
Nils Petter Molvær - trumpet & electronics
Eivind Aarset - guitar & electronics
Vladislav Delay - keyboards & sampler

This is a Remastered and Lossless version of a show we had previously posted in MP4 vbr, so this is a major upgrade for all that downloaded that particular Sly & Robbie Meets Nils Petter Molvær show. If you been around this blog a while you know that I love Nils Petter Molvær's music. Combining Jazz and Electronic Music to spearhead the Future Jazz movement. Other Jazz musicians that helped to pioneer and refine Future Jazz were Dave Douglas & Arild Anderson. All of course personal favorites of mine, each with there own take on the genre. Sly And Robby are a Jazz/Hip-Hop Electronic musicians who when joined with the Nils Petter Molvær Trio make pure magic on stage. The band uses their recorded songs as a blue print to venture of into fresh improvised destinations.

This is actually the first full Nirvana show posted on The New JDP. We have posted a Westwood One Best of collection with 1 song on it. We have also posted some Foo Fighters which is only Nirvana related. So this is a nice way to start the Nirvana section of our little shop. I personally was more into Mother Love Bone and Soundgarden when it came to the 1990 Seattle take over. I liked Nirvana but felt they had not done anything that The Ramones, Johnny Thunders and some Post Punks hadn't already done a couple decades earlier. If MTV had been around when either Punk Icons debuted the impact of Nirvana may not have been so big. Just my opinion, and I did not say Kurt & Company didn't write some damn good songs. They did, and here is a nice sounding recording of Nirvana playing those songs!

JustDave's Notes:
If burning to CD-r you will have to decide where to put CD breaks. My divisions where just made to make it easier for download with CD breaks not in mind at all.

Cult Legends is a label that releases bootlegged radio broadcast recordings of international stars. They also release legitimate commercial recordings of Scandinavian musicians. I guess that makes them a little more legit than say Godfathers or Darker Than Blue which only release bootleg recordings.

Compilation of radio broadcasts made by the original (and best!!) Ted Nugent Band during the 1977 & 1978 American tours. It's the only live recording I have of "A Thousand Knives". I can see why it wasn't played live a lot. The dual vocal harmony arrangement didn't quite come off right live. The crowd reaction was also slightly tepid.

The Flac file set is rather large so they have been split into 2 parts. The parts will unzip separately.

JustDave's Notes:
The Palace Of Auburn Hills had opened it's doors on August 13, 1988. Pink Floyd were the first band of any Rock genre to play The Palace. My friend Gypsy Dan and I were in attendance the first night. The show was sponsored by WRIF-FM 101 Detroit so it cost each of us a $1.01 US for our ticket's, which were great seats. The Pig during "One Of These Days" shone directly at us for the long bassy synth solo in the mid section. It was blinding, the next day my bass player tells me that a Pink Floyd Roadey came into his Autoworks Parts Store to buy like 8 high-brightness halogen headlights for the Pig.

This recording covers both nights of Pink Floyd's 2 night stint as the opening Rock band of The Palace. Crosby, Stills & Nash played the next 2 nights for only $.98 US. I remember joking that David Crosby looked like Grandpa Jones from Hee Haw!

This is a large file set in both Flac and MP3. The Flac CDs have been uploaded separately and the MP3 has been uploaded in 2 parts. All parts may open separately.

John Zorn is as much of an experimentalist as Mike Patton from Faith No More. If you're a fan of either musician you will appreciate the other as well. Although it's not every music fan that thinks a melding of Grindcore, Noisecore and Free Jazz is a great idea. For me it was a big "Oh my Efin' God I Have To Her This..." moment. I loved every noisy moment of it!!! I admit this show will be a little too much for some...If you are a fan of Grindcore acts such as Nazum, Napalm Death, Gadget, Exit-13, Gruesome Stuff Relish or East-West Blast Test (which is the closest thing to Naked City). You have an idea what Naked City is like. If your a Faith No More fan that fell down the Mike Patton side project Rabbit Hole to Fantômas or Mr. Bungle you also kind of know what to expect..I truly think though that Frank Zappa would love it, Noise as art... If there is interest I have another Naked City show and a show where John Zorn, Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo improv 2 great sets of Naked City-esque music (fabulous stuff).

From Wikipedia:
Géraldine Laurent (born 18 January 1975) is a French jazz alto saxophonist.

Laurent studied classical piano at the Niort Conservatoire before changing to alto saxophone at the age of 12. She has been a member of the Christophe Joneau Quartet. In parallel with her main trio with Yoni Zelnik and Laurent Bataille, she also had a trio with Hélène Labarrière and Éric Groleau, concentrating more on free improvisation. She prefers to play jazz standards to original compositions, and cites John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy among her influences.

Now she's not really a huge name but I'm willing to bet she will be. This is actually my introduction to the playing of Géraldine Laurent. Actually I probably haven't heard of the rest of her Quartet. I will say I love the way they play together. There is something interesting about the arraignments as well. Maybe phrasing or it's possible that the that the voices of the instruments could be swapped. Like the piano playing the horn's part etc...I'm not sure but I've been addicted to this show, I think you will be too...

Draftervoi's Notes:
The disc label is "Live From Gilley's, but the cue sheet says "Westwood One Presents." These were two different shows, which used different record labels on the discs.

The show introduction by Jim Duncan says "Westwood One Presents the Jerry Lee Lewis show, live from the Palomino Club in North Hollywood." but the "outro" after the show says "join us next for Johnny Rodriguez show, live from Gilley's!"

My guess is that it's ridiculous to introduce the show as "Westwood One Live At Gilley's presents a show recorded live at an entirely different night club 1,579 miles west of where Gilley's is located," so they opted for putting this on a Westwood One Presents cue sheet, introduced it as a Westwood One Presents show, and then reverted to the Live From Gilley's outro.

As if that's not confusing enough......

There's an album out there called "The Complete Palomino Club Recordings" which OF COURSE is not complete, as it only compiles performances from 1979-81 and 1985Jerry Lee Lewis performed at the Palomino every year from 1957 until 1987, sometimes playing three or four times a year.

This Westwood One show was released in Europe in 1988 on 2 LP's entitled "Live From Gilley's Volume 1," and "Live From Gilley's Volume 2," and the records look like a "no label" unauthorized release.

There's also ANOTHER "Live From Gilley's" album with an entirely different track list combining songs from '83 and '87 that appears to be a legitimate release, as it's up on Amazon.  There's also ANOTHER show derived from 1984 Westwood One shows, ALSO named "Live At Gilley's."

This version digitized January 2016 from the syndicated transcription disc.

Been a while since I've brought The Blues, even longer since I brought The King. So not only did I bring The King, I brought 2 Kings. Not only that but I even brought a man who's middle name is Blue. Albert King opens the show and is soon joined by Bobby "Blue Bland. After that warm up B.B. King drifts in to let the good times roll (ok so I'm not a good comedian). At the end you get B.B. King, Albert King and Bobby "Blue" Bland jamming together. It could be longer but it couldn't get any better. I mean, how much Blues could one stage hold. Maybe some Paul Butterfield on the harp and Pine Top Perkins on the piano. A little Eddie "Bluesman" Kirkland or "Honey Boy" Edwards for some diversity in the guitar style. If you can't tell I been listening to some of my old Blues records...

justdave's notes:
I ripped the audio with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to index tracks, then add a fade in at the beginning and a fade out at the end. No EQ or noise reduction used. No remixing or remastering. There were 2 videos, 1 at the beginning and the other at the end, which are commercially available so the audio from them was edited out. The DVD audio was MP3 based so I used Trader's Little Helper to encode the waves to MP3 320kbps.

Jerry Lee Lewis passed away October 28, 2022 at the age of 87. The many Architects Of Rock And Roll are gone.....
