El Arco Iris, Galco's Grocery and Donut Friend

Went to Highland Park to get Mexican food, sodas and donuts, in that order! El Arco Iris has been there since the 60's I think!

Vegan burrito on the menu filled with rice, beans, calabacitas and guacamole topped with red sauce (sauce was my request.)

Galco's sells a gigantic assortment of retro sodas and also beers and wines. Fab selection!

Donut Friend has mostly vegan donuts in the most exciting flavor combos.

Top: Nutellavision (not vegan- for hubby), Strawberry So Far, S'Morrissey
Bottom: Cinnamineral, Custard Front Drive, Bacon 182

Lovely day with a Lovely Lady.

Had a lovely day today with my good friend Cam. She and I love to get together at the local Whole Foods for coffee, breakfast and donuts. After a bit of nosh, we peruse the aisles for goods to go. We also went guitar shopping and came back home and had lunch on the patio.

Vegan chocolate donut and coffee. Mmm. They had other flavors like blueberry, maple, cherry, crumb...but I made myself only choose one!

The savory part of my breakfast from the food bar at Whole Foods: sauteed mushrooms, breakfast potatoes, falafel ball(1), garlic sauce, baba ganouj, quinoa, sweet potato, beet salad. So yummy.

Lunch at home. Tofurky, Follow Your Heart provolone style slices, arugula, tomato and red peppers on ciabatta.

Kim and Cam, happy together.

I live for weekend grilling!

This kind of thing makes me very happy. Red and yellow peppers, onions, eggplant, mushrooms, snow peas, pasilla peppers, jalapenos, tomatoes...

Grilled bbq tofu and red potatoes.

BBQ tofu sandwich.

And later in the day, relaxing with tea and a vegan donut from Whole Foods in Venice.

Vegan Donuts in West L.A.!

I walked into Venice Whole Foods yesterday to find a whole case of VEGAN DONUTS. There were about 8 varieties. I was so excited I was literally jumping up and down while my friend Cami laughed at me. They also had vegan turnovers, muffins and cookies.

Look at these beauties.

I'm about to eat my first donut in six years!!! (It's a Chocolate Long John.)

It's got custard inside!

This apple fritter was the apple fritter of my vegan dreams. Can't wait to go back and have a go at the other flavors!

After Thanksgiving Foods.

This morning I was in the mood for a fluffy stack of pancakes so I went with my go-to recipe from Vegan With A Vengeance (also in the Vegan Brunch book). The recipe makes PERFECT pancakes. No eggs or dairy necessary!

When I was little, I used to make scrambled eggs with slices of processed Kraft singles on top which would melt and make the eggs very cheesy. I recreated that today with scrambled tofu and Daiya vegan cheddar. I sort of mixed in small slices of Daiya into the tofu while it cooked in the pan. It got all melty and gooey.

Yesterday's lunch was a very simple congee (rice porridge) made with carrots, celery and leftover Tofurky bits. Sriracha is a must when eating congee.

Fast donuts made out of Pillsbury crescent roll dough. Deep fried and dunked in cinnamon-sugar!

VeganMoFo: Happy Halloween!

Yes, I know Halloween is tomorrow but this is probably going to be my last food post for VeganMoFo. I'm impressed with myself. I made 25 posts this month which is 5 shy of last year's but not bad at all. Considering I've been busy with my new job as well as running my jewelry business part time at home and trying to find time in the mornings to make my meals, it all went swimmingly. I had a great time reading everyone's blogs this MoFo. It is always inspiring. Let's keep this celebration of vegan food going! I'll leave you with a Hallow's Eve treat: mini donut cakes dunked in a powdered sugar glaze and adorned with festive sprinkles. What's better than a sugary sweet treat on Halloween? Recipe to be found here.

4th of July Food.

A very simple and understated menu: Broiled veggies and mushrooms, baked potato and salad with strawberry/jalapeno/balsamic vinaigrette. I marinated the veggies in a garlic/olive oil/vinegar marinade and broiled them on a skewer. I also made the "Backyard BBQ Sauce" from Veganomicon. I brushed some sauce on the veggies while they were broiling. It was the perfect sauce: tangy, sweet and smoky. This was a perfect meal for today which left lots of room for...(wait for it)...deep fried donuts!

I made these because they remind me of childhood. When I was little, my mom and aunts used to fry up pieces of dough for us kids and we just loved them. They didn't add any sugar or anything but these little nuggets of plain deep fried dough were so good. They were golden and crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. I remember thinking they must have made their own special dough for this but found out it was actually Pillsbury Crescent refrigerated dough! It's not in the least bit healthy but I decided to go for it and make some today. (the dough is vegan by the way!) I made some plain like I remember and some of the donuts sweet by dipping them in cinnamon and sugar. The sweet ones tasted like churros!

And you have to have a cocktail to enjoy with all of this food. This is seltzer water, sour cherry syrup and vodka!
