Moments in automotive history #170

Frankly most people were dubious when Maserati announced their bid to provide the army’s new Rapid Response Vehicle; although the prototype, picture above, was certainly rapid it failed to meet criteria in two other areas of the army’s requirements, it was unable to carry more than two very small soldiers wearing nothing bulkier than Bermuda shorts and, in spite of the prototype’s paint job, would only be made available in Shocking Pink or Gorgeous Gold.

santas

The new urban operations team were not renowned for the subtlety of their approach nor the sophistication of the outfits they chose to “blend in” with their environment. These failings were particularly apparent on their December 24th mission to round-up dissident elements in a number of retail locations. To be honest, disguising the snatch vehicles as reindeer-powered sleighs was a give-away to even the most gullible observer.

kicking off

Ji-Liang had spent 3 months in the hell of officer training when he finally snapped during the marine’s unarmed combat training. His remarkable performance in the rather flooded paddy field outside the camp was further enhanced when the rest of the squad joined in and kicked the training sergeant to death. All of them received a “commendation” on passing out, for their realistic approach to the training regime

photo club

After being conscripted Li-Xso and his chums from university decided to carry on with their small photographic club whose website and Weibo social media accounts had a small but dedicated international following. It was only after posting-up their images from basic training that the group discovered just how sensitive their training sergeants could be: this is the last image from any of the group to appear on-line.

no santa

Pete signed-up as soon as he was old enough, proud to serve the country he loved against the evil forces that beset her. Home-schooled and from a deeply religious agricultural community in the Deep South he found some aspects of military life distressing; the day that his instructors explained to him that there was no Santa Claus was particularly trying for all concerned

It was at this moment that Janice reminded Paul about his long-outstanding promise to do the “decent thing by her” and introduced him to her (rather over-protective) big brother, Karl.

The last run-through for the Liberation Day parade was going really well until someone noticed the pizza stand which had set-up alongside the route.

canteen

To be honest even Luch-Kim had realised, by the second day, that his signature “edible fungus curry” supper was proving to be unpopular with the Brigade HQ staff. His rapid transfer back to the mine clearing team before the end of his first week seemed to be certain.

choppy

The decision to include the Catering Corps in the PLA’s Winter training exercise was met with disbelief and incredulity by the new cadets, right up until they were introduced to the “animal slaughter and vegetable chopping in severe weather conditions,” portion of the programme; at which point they all agreed it was “pretty cool.”

disappointed

It would be fair to say that recruit Jang-Chi was disappointed when the Honor Cadet promotion went to his best friend Xi-Lao. The determination and original thought the he displayed in dealing with the situation resulted in him being awarded the vacated position and his appointment as leader in the full military honours that were granted for Xi-Lao’s funeral.
