repair crew

Even with the corporal helping Jan-Xi realised he was never going to get the damn truck going with a “bump start”, and without a set of jump leads things did not look good; at this rate the rest of the Company might as well have been on the other side of the moon. He was definitely not going to make it to base in time for dinner tonight!

pla gamesnight

Basic training in the PLA was generally dull, tiring and severely lacking in fun, but things began to look up after the Special Forces training unit introduced “Games Night”. Pretty much every training platoon joined in the fun and the rate of enlistments after conscription was gratifyingly improved across all of the armed forces.

The PLA’s Undercover Urban Response Unit was trained to the highest standards possible; as was demonstrated when No. 2 Company, pictured in training above, won the World Break Dance & Hip Hop championship in Detroit.

kicking off

Ji-Liang had spent 3 months in the hell of officer training when he finally snapped during the marine’s unarmed combat training. His remarkable performance in the rather flooded paddy field outside the camp was further enhanced when the rest of the squad joined in and kicked the training sergeant to death. All of them received a “commendation” on passing out, for their realistic approach to the training regime

singalong

Jang was not only the platoon’s Political Officer he also had ambitions to be a western-style folksinger. In this picture, the last known, he is singing an amusing medley of 1960’s protest songs and EuroVision hits. He was detained shortly after the photograph was taken and sent for rehabilitation to a government facility in the Gobi desert where he at last came to fully understand the implications of “suffering for his art.”

call home

Xo was 35 years old, he had been in the army for twelve years, had become corporal and platoon leader five years ago and was currently bucking to be kicked-up to sergeant; and still his mother phoned him twice a day to make sure he was eating properly and had clean underwear.

ant racing

For those posted to the more remote rural provinces life was dull with little opportunity to relax and enjoy the finer things of life; that was until Lian-Xi came up with the brilliant idea of ant racing. Not only did it provide entertainment for his fellow conscripts, it also allowed Lian-Xi to leave the army, after 6 months, as a full colonel, buy a large home in Beijing and subsequently acted as the prototype for his nationwide chain of gaming establishments.

chase

The longer-term effects of a skewed “one child” policy combined with the introduction of Tinder into the People’s Republic of China made life increasingly difficult for the female members of the People’s Liberation Army. Avoiding the romantic inclinations of her fellow platoon members led to Chi-Gai achieving a sub-4 minute mile and marriage to a 3 star general.

photo club

After being conscripted Li-Xso and his chums from university decided to carry on with their small photographic club whose website and Weibo social media accounts had a small but dedicated international following. It was only after posting-up their images from basic training that the group discovered just how sensitive their training sergeants could be: this is the last image from any of the group to appear on-line.

The last run-through for the Liberation Day parade was going really well until someone noticed the pizza stand which had set-up alongside the route.
