singalong

Jang was not only the platoon’s Political Officer he also had ambitions to be a western-style folksinger. In this picture, the last known, he is singing an amusing medley of 1960’s protest songs and EuroVision hits. He was detained shortly after the photograph was taken and sent for rehabilitation to a government facility in the Gobi desert where he at last came to fully understand the implications of “suffering for his art.”

Pete and Jenny had only been an “item” for a couple of months when he invited her to come along to watch him training for the mine clearing posting that he had been hoping for. In retrospect, he was forced too admit, that waving her over to share his lunch had probably been a little unwise

Cho-Li and the guys were pretty pumped at being the Motor Pool Company selected to service and maintain the new all-terrain vehicle that that Army would be introducing next year. Their enthusiasm dimmed a little when they discovered the “locking brake problem,” the “gear-sticking problem,” and the “non-standard bolt and fastening systems.” With the new tool kits unavailable for at least another two years the team was not looking forward to the Winter.

Lin-Jao was pretty much the “go to” guy for basic maintenance and decorating chores back at the base,  but he’d begun to feel like a “fifth wheel” on these mountain training exercises. At least he was doing better than the guys who looked after the camels.

In order to cut costs and speed-up the process, the People’s Liberation Army arranged to have its “mine detecting” dogs trained in France. There was a degree of confusion in the translation of the original contract and although the returning dogs proved useless in combat situations the regular supply of truffles they dug-up was very welcome in the Officers’ Mess.

reduction-plan

President Xi’s decision to reduce the size of the People’s Liberation Army resulted in some hard choices when it came to dishing-out jobs to the less successful recruits, but the desired 10% reduction was achieved on the very first day of the annual marksmanship competition. The new “moving targets” element in the competition proved very popular, especially amongst the drill sergeants.
