South Carolina’s measles outbreak keeps growing

The measles outbreak in South Carolina continues to grow. State health officials report another nine cases, for a total of 185. Of those infected, 172 were unvaccinated. There are more than 200 people in quarantine and three in isolation. Most cases were reported in children ages five to 17. The widening outbreak has been reported in the northwest part of South Carolina, which includes Greenville and Spartanburg.

House votes to renew Obamacare subsidies for 3 years

The House has voted to renew Obamacare subsidies for three years. Seventeen House Republicans voted with Democrats to continue the health insurance tax credits that expired at the end of December. GOP leaders were unable to stop the vote because enough lawmakers signed a discharge petition to overrule the House Speaker. The bill now goes to the Senate, where pressure is building for a similar bipartisan compromise.

GOP Promises Thorough Oversight Hearings On Trump Executive Moves

Senate Republicans say upcoming hearings will provide thorough oversight of President Trump’s use of executive power. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) says he;s observed a lot of presidents and says they all try to exert as much executive power as they can. Then he says as a matter of course those decisions often have to face scutiny from the courts and Congress, Thune  told CNN Republican senators “have a responsibility as an independent, coequal branch of the government to make sure that we’re doing appropriate oversight of these decisions.”

Senate to Hold a Vote on War Powers

The Senate is set to vote on a war powers measure following the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This report from Bernie Bennett in Washington.

Virginia Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine said he will force a vote next week to block further military action against Venezuela without congressional approval in the wake of President Donald Trump’s operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he expects “further briefings from the administration on this operation as part of its comprehensive counternarcotics strategy.” House Speaker Mike Johnson added that the Trump administration is working to schedule briefings for lawmakers when they return.
