The two were more then just dancers at the Nine Bells – they were sisters in spirit, bound by shimmering hip scarves and the infectious rhythms of the drum.

Each night as the candles flickered and the raucous laughter of revelers filled the smoky air, they would take to the small stage, eyes lined with kohl and jeweled castanets adorning their delicate fingers. One was lithe as a sapling in the wind, her undulating movements hypnotic and ethereal. The other danced with the passion of a storm, her powerful hip work and exuberant shimmies igniting sparks of joy.

Though their styles were contrasting, they moved in perfect unison, anticipating each other’s transitions with ease. As the show reached its captivating crescendo, coins would rain down upon them in appreciation, clinking musically as the dancers laughed and bowed with wild abandon.

It’s that time of year: Shopping Season. Everywhere shores were offering goods with low percentages and people were racing to and fro to the best deal before anyone else. True, there was some sense of urgency as the stores had time limits on the deals, so the throng of people she saw everywhere was understandable.

Of course, she wasn’t excluding herself from the madness. She stepped out of the subway with bags in both of her hands. She had gotten the early jump on some of the sales and had beaten the more dense crowds. She glanced over the street were she saw a congestion of people at nearby shops. Her apartment wasn’t far and she had planned on going straight there after getting off the train.

Shaking her head she started walking home, but only was able to take a few steps before she looked behind her. The bags she held were not too heavy, and the store was (kind of) on the way home. She turned and headed towards the stores. Besides, it was just one more stop.

•{ The enemy is Cancer – Why I Relay

When a loved one is fighting a battle for their life we want to do whatever we can to help them win; at the very least we want them to know that they are not alone. Battles are long, hard, and they test a person in ways they never imagined. No one goes into a fight expecting to loose. One such fight, is the fight against cancer.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI)  reports that, “In 2018, an estimated 1,735,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 609,640 people will die from the disease.”

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) there are more 70 different types of Cancer. It takes many forms and doesn’t discriminate on age, gender, religion, or ethnicity. It can attack anyone. While some risk factors of this disease can be changed, there are those that cannot.

Cancer not only affects its chosen target, but the lives of the people around them. My grandmother – on my mother’s side – died of cancer after a year of fighting in 2007. After a two-year battle my mother also died of cancer in 2009. I have seen first hand how the disease takes once vibrant person and slowly strips them away.

The weight a person feels when the report comes in that they have cancer, or says that there’s nothing to be done, is nearly indescribable. How does a person go on with a time-bomb over their head? How do you deal with the fact that any time you see the person could be the last time? Currently I am in the process of watching my other grandmother loose her 5-year battle with cancer. This is the third time I am having to watch and go through seeing someone I love die due to this disease. Sometimes it is too much to bear.

While it may be too late for my grandmother, and all the others who have lost their battle with cancer, there is still hope for others.

Relay for Life (RFL) is a principle fundraiser from the ACS encouraging people to raise money for cancer research. In SecondLife one of the largest RLF events is the Fantasy Faire which, so far, has raised over $20k US for the cause. The event has over 100 shops with designers giving percentages of sales to the cause. RLF reports that in August of 2018 $410 million had been raised to fund cancer research. This organization also helps provide resources, free rides, and places to stay near hospitals.

Relay for Life gives people a chance to help fight. Donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word. With everyones help, someday, this battle could be won.

•{ Don’t Think About You . . .

Things had been going well. It took some time but now she felt that she finally got her life back on track. Removed some people from her life and had started over from the bottom. When everything is working out, that’s when life tosses in a wrench. The phone rang. Without checking to see who it was she answered, “Hello?”

“Did you forget about me?”

The voice on the other end was unexpected. Her whole body clenched and she felt her heart start to beat faster as anxiety started to creep over her. She looked at the phone. His number was blocked so he had called from a new one.

“Oh, you tore me to pieces
Turned my strength into weakness…”

Her shock lasted only a moment before she was able to reply. “You must be bored and lonely. I’m hanging up now.” Amidst his pleads on the other end for her to hear him out she hung up.

“I feel freedom where I stand now
And I feel proud from who I am now
Yeah, I learned a lot along the way
I love the woman that I became . . .”

Before she put her phone away she labeled the number. If he called again from that number she would be prepared.

The day progressed normally and whenever her phone rang again she checked the number before answering. He didn’t call back. She wondered if some part of her did want him to call. It was crazy. Insane. It took her forever to get past what had happened between so there was no way she would want him around again. Right? Right.

The phone rang again as she was getting ready for bed. She thought about letting it go to voicemail, but she reached over and got it. She knew it was him even before she looked at the ID.

She answered the call.

“I’ve changed,” said the voice. “Think about it.” That was all they were able to get out before she hung up and tossed the phone to the side.

Letting out a deep exhale she laid across her sheets. “I don’t think about you . . .”
