Nature needs action, not just ambition. As the theme of COP17 highlights, the focus is on turning biodiversity commitments into measurable progress. Next week, our team will be in Armenia, bringing expertise across nature, resilience, regeneration, reporting, finance, infrastructure and place-based transformation. Meet our COP17 team: Tom Butterworth, John Tayleur, Laura Homfray, David Young, Sarah Gillhespy, Margot Greenen and Katelyn Nagle. What helps a workplace stand the test of time? White Collar Factory set out to challenge the conventional commercial office model by combining lessons from the past with new technology. The result is a low-energy, adaptable building that continues to perform. Working with Derwent London and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the project was shaped by five key principles: high ceilings, an activated thermal-mass structure, a simple passive façade, flexible floorplates and ‘smart’ servicing. Recognised with the British Council for Offices, Test of Time Award, the building demonstrates the lasting value of integrated design. Nearly a decade on from its opening, many of the ideas that shaped it are now central drivers of high-quality workplaces today: adaptability, lower energy demand and a greater focus on workplace experience. How do you turn a simple wedding chapel into a structural work of art? For Ribbon Chapel in Japan, we helped to create a striking, spiralling steel structure formed by two intertwined stairways. Combining architecture, structural engineering and symbolism, Ribbon Chapel creates a unique journey to the chapel's highest point, giving panoramic views and a memorable setting for ceremonies. Under the theme Density and Identity: Shaping Skylines, Elevating Culture, the VU Summit 2026 will bring together leaders from across the built environment to explore how cities can respond to growth, climate, and mobility challenges while creating places that reflect local identity. We will be represented throughout the summit, bringing expertise from across our global portfolio to conversations on the future of vertical urbanism, including chairing a session on “Low-Carbon Design and Building Performance”. This year’s awards shortlist also recognises ten of our projects, reflecting the breadth of our work across tall buildings. We’re proud to be supporting the VU Summit 2026, taking place in London from 26-29 October. What does it take to modernise spatial planning for one of Central Asia's fastest-growing regions? Working with local partner IKS Group of Companies - Innovation Solutions, we have been appointed to develop an integrated regional strategy for Uzbekistan's Tashkent region, combining global spatial planning expertise with local knowledge. Commissioned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, the programme supports the Uzbekistan 2030 vision for balanced social and economic growth. It is funded by the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Community engagement will help ensure women, young people and vulnerable groups can shape outcomes, while close collaboration with local authorities and communities will support the development of a practical framework for inclusive and sustainable growth. The plans also aim to improve living conditions, reduce inequalities, attract investment and build lasting local capability. Gustavo Goy Garcia, Project Manager for the commission said: "This programme is an important step towards a more integrated approach to regional and urban planning in Uzbekistan, linking regional strategy with district plans and detailed masterplanning." 80 years on, we’re choosing the long view. Today we’ve published our Annual Report for the financial year ended 31 March 2026, ‘Shaping a better world together’. In our 80th year, and the first year of our 2025–2030 strategy, our revenue grew 5% to £2.27bn, as we expanded our presence in critical industries of the future like water, energy, and science, industry and technology. As a trust-owned firm, we’ve reinvested that growth to support our long-term success. We’ve invested in our people, in digital and AI tools, and in a more connected global network that brings the best of Arup to clients wherever they are. You can see the results in our work: → Designing Toronto’s new 18-stop Finch West light rail line, now open to passengers → Using AI to help tackle plastic pollution in Manila’s Pasig River → Protecting low-income settlements in Delhi from rising heat stress → Better protecting more than 2,000 properties from flooding in Newport, Wales Hear from our CEO Jerome Frost, Chair Hilde Tonne and Chair of Trustees Mahadev Raman on the year, and read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eZHdhKGH #WeAreArup

Set against one of the world's most recognisable landscapes, the Grand Egyptian Museum is shaped by the terrain around it. Overlooking the Pyramids of Giza, the museum uses the site's natural topography to integrate a building of extraordinary scale into its surroundings. By aligning the roof with the desert plateau, it blends discreetly into its environment while creating distinctive exhibition spaces and a memorable visitor experience that honours Egypt’s cultural heritage. Working alongside heneghan peng architects and the wider project team, we led the engineering of the complex earthworks, bespoke structural systems and glazed façades that helped bring the design to life. How do you create a long‑span pavilion that is lightweight, expressive, and designed for reuse? Built for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, the Blue Ocean Dome is a unique pavilion formed by three large domes, each constructed from an unconventional structural material. Designed in collaboration with Shigeru Ban Architects, the project showcases how innovative engineering can respond to challenging ground conditions while extending a building’s life beyond a single event. Leading the structural design, we adopted three distinct materials to achieve long spans without piled foundations: recycled paper tubes for a 19-metre dome, laminated bamboo for a second 19-metre dome, and carbon fibre reinforced plastic for a 42-metre dome. Each material was selected for its strength‑to‑weight performance and tested to meet structural and regulatory requirements. The domes are structurally independent, connected through moving joints to accommodate different behaviours and designed for relocation after the Expo. This project demonstrates how structural engineering can combine material innovation, performance and circular design thinking. Exploring designing for reuse? The transition to a lower-carbon future depends on a secure supply of critical minerals. At the same time, mining projects are facing growing expectations around environmental stewardship, social licence and long-term resilience. We've contributed to Environment Analyst's Responsible Mining Guide 2026, which brings together perspectives from across the industry on the challenges and opportunities shaping the sector. Our contribution explores how nature-based solutions can help address water security, biodiversity, climate resilience and mine closure liabilities, supporting more sustainable outcomes throughout the mining lifecycle.
