Money forms part of our everyday lives – but how many of us know how it really works? And how do we fix things when they go wrong? 📚 Bank of England economists Rupal Patel and Jack Leslie introduce their new book, Money: The Inside Story, and explain why they wrote it. Through the book, they will take us behind the scenes at the UK’s central bank to explore how money is supposed to work, what happens when it doesn’t, and where it might be going next – drawing on insights from deep within the Bank of England. The book is the follow-up to the international bestseller Can’t We Just Print More Money? Money: The Inside Story is published by Cornerstone Press on 11 June. Over £4 million donated to charities through our charity of the year partnerships in the last 20 years 💷💷 Bank of England staff have raised over £4 million in donations to over 40 of our chosen charities over the past 20 years. This is through staff fundraising, matched funding from the Bank, and charity banknote auctions. Our charities of the year 2023/5 were Shout, The Childhood Trust and Trussell. As a result of this two-year partnership over £553,000.00 was donated between the three charities. For over 10 years, staff have also donated via Microhive, a simple scheme with staff choosing to donate their pennies from their monthly payslips. In recognition of this, the Bank of England has recently been awarded with the Microhive Platinum Award 2026 for microdonations to charities. 💬 Caroline Westley, Director of Income, Mental Health Innovations, the charity that provides the service Shout said: "The Bank of England’s incredible commitment to championing their charity partners and their generosity will help us be there for people who feel they have nowhere else to turn. "The support from the Bank of England during our two-year partnership has enabled Shout to provide a vital lifeline to over 10,000 conversations from individuals across the UK who so desperately need it. It has been an absolute pleasure working with the team." 💬 Josephine McCartney, Chief Executive, The Childhood Trust said: “During our two-year partnership, the Bank of England’s vital support to The Childhood Trust has made a significant and meaningful difference to children growing up in poverty across London. "Your generosity — through fundraising and the banknote auction — has helped us reach 26,000 children and young people, creating safe spaces to play, opportunities to thrive, and brighter futures for those facing circumstances no child should ever have to endure.” 💬 Zoe Pate, Assistant Director of Income, Trussell said: “Thank you so much for all the support we have received from Bank of England in our partnership together. We are delighted that over £170,000 has been raised which equates to providing emergency food to over 12,700 people facing hunger. "Your vital support, alongside staff volunteering and engagement with our work, has enabled us to continue to provide a lifeline of support in communities throughout the UK, where people face hunger and hardship, as we work towards a future without the need for food banks - thank you!” Read more about the Bank’s current and previous charities of the year here: https://lnkd.in/eNnSXvu5

The conflict in Iran has had a profound impact on the global economy, sending energy prices soaring. In the UK, signs of the inflationary impact of the shock have already emerged, raising important questions about how it may propagate over time. In this speech, Megan Greene outlines the price- and wage- setting channels through which energy shocks can feed into broader, more persistent inflation dynamics. She compares the current episode with recent previous shocks and draws lessons for assessing the extent of second-round effects and the appropriate monetary policy strategy.
