"A shortlist in six hours. A placement within 72...Eight years on, that placement probably made my career." Jack Lane #privateequity #hiring #finatal

8 years ago in May, I signed the contract for Philip Jan, FCA to support the exit of wagamama. In October 2018, Duke Street agreed to sell the business for £559m.   I was given the opportunity by the FD John Rooney, who I’d met only 2 months prior in a Starbucks on Wardour Street. I’d spent months trying to get to grips with multi-site hospitality, I had spoken to dozens of restaurants CFOs and had just about gotten my head around Netsuite implementations. I was pretty confident I'd be able to convince John I could help him.   I’d returned to the office somewhat deflated having felt rather stupid for not knowing what the Coffer Peach Business Tracker was and for having been confidently told ‘We probably won’t ever need you since our finance team is stable and we get everyone via Linkedin’.   Exactly 57 days later, John reached out on a 'confidential project' that may need some extra resource. I was genuinely beaming to have got the call.   Dominic M. sat across from me in Finatal's old office on Riding House Street – I had Phil Jan’s name, his CV and his deal sheet in my inbox from Dominic before I’d finished the call with John. His transaction experience was a superb fit for what we needed. An outrageously good shout – and one that, candidly, I wouldn't have found on my own. Dominic knew Phil well. I did not.   I will never forget that day and that deal. John had a shortlist in 6 hours. A placement within 72. Phil started 5 days after my first ever phone call to him.   That placement probably made my career. As soon as the deal was announced I was free to tell everyone I’d supported a PE backed business with resource for an exit. Wagamama was a hot topic and I rode that wave for as long as humanly possible. If you were a restaurant CFO in 2019 you could have barely told me your name before I’d have told you my magical success with Phil and John.   With each and every opportunity to help an exit I am always firmly reminded of Wagamama in 2018. A placement made because a colleague paid attention.   I bought Dominic a nice lunch at Hawksmoor (the irony of which is not lost on me) – Chateaubriand for two and a £40 bottle of wine.   In hindsight, probably should have gone for the vintage.

3️⃣ Three things investors need to rethink about AI and cybersecurity. In this second video on how AI is rewriting the economics of cybersecurity, Finatal's Director of Data and Technology Leadership, Max Yish, sets out what this means for investors: 📉 Vulnerability is now scalable: hidden technical debt is more likely to surface ⚡ Speed is now a core risk factor: it's not about how secure you are; it's how quickly you can respond 📐 Risk is becoming measurable: cyber posture can be benchmarked, priced and improved "AI risk is now actual deal risk and the firms that are winning are the ones that are building AI-specific cyber questions into the valuation." 🧠 As AI continues to reshape recruitment, one thing hasn’t changed: this is still a human judgement business. Paul Blant, Finatal’s Group CEO, recently contributed to a Financial Times piece exploring how AI is being used across the industry. At Finatal, our view is simple: in private capital, recruitment is still at least 95% judgement. Yes, we're early adopters of AI across our workflows. It’s embedded in how we operate day to day, driving speed, insight and efficiency. But the outcomes we’re accountable for don’t come from tools alone. They come from: ⚖️ Judgement on leadership fit in high-stakes environments 🔬 Deep understanding of funds, situations and context 🤝 Relationships built over time with clients and candidates That’s what underpins successful mandates - and long-term credibility. So the question isn’t whether you’re using AI in recruitment. It’s whether you’re applying the judgement around it, because that’s ultimately what drives hiring decisions - and outcomes.
