The boss of Britain's biggest energy supplier is telling the government to spend less money on energy... Hang on, what? There's a plan to upgrade Britain's electricity grid that's heading towards an enormous £70bn+ bill for consumers. The assumption baked into it is that the only way to get a clean power system to build loads more transmission lines. Greg Jackson’s point in The Telegraph is pretty simple: there's often smarter, cheaper alternatives. New technology can make far better use of the grid we already have. Grid-scale batteries and local flexibility can offer a faster cheaper alternative to building new wires. Network upgrade costs are already set to be the single biggest driver of household bill increases between now and 2030. Bills could be close to £2,000 this winter. The government's instinct is a targeted support package, and we get it. But fix the underlying cost first. Cut the waste from the programme, run a leaner system, and there's far less pressure for bailouts in the first place. Turns out the most effective support package is not wasting £70bn in the first place.

Our partnership with Tokyo Gas goes back to 2020, when we launched energy retailer TG Octopus Energy together and in 2023, Tokyo Gas became the first company in Japan to license the Kraken technology platform. Together we're showing what this kind of partnership can actually deliver: British clean energy technology, deployed at scale, making energy greener and more affordable for millions of Japanese homes. People in Britain want energy security that doesn't depend on what's happening thousands of miles away. As the Middle East conflict continues to shake the world - people are asking us about solar, heat pumps and electric cars in record numbers. Solar sales up 54%. Heat pumps up 51%. EV leasing up 36%. Battery installations nearly doubled. Clean energy and electric tech are becoming the obvious choice for Britain: not just because it's the right thing for the planet. Because it makes financial sense, and the product is simply better. The Financial Times likened it this week to Americans swapping their Cadillacs for Fords in 1973 - and despite everything going on in the world right now, the point stands: people make smarter choices when the old ones stop making sense.

It's official: every new home in England will be built with solar panels and clean heating – like heat pumps – from 2028. It's been a big week for energy, here's what you need to know: ☀️The Future Homes Standard is finally here. After a decade delay (the original policy was scrapped in 2015), from 2028 new builds all get solar, and electric heating instead of gas boilers. Homes will produce at least 75% less carbon than 2013 standard homes. And they'll be up to £830/year cheaper to run. 🏠 (Psst, are you a housebuilder or developer? Right now, the UK spends ~£1.5B a year paying wind farms to switch off - and replacing them with gas. (Yes - that really happens!) The government wants to fix that by trialling discounted bills in those areas instead. It's a step in the right direction. But as our CEO Greg Jackson put it: "We've been pushing for this for years. Don't trial it - go the whole hog." Make it permanent. Let people invest in heat pumps, EVs and batteries knowing cheap clean power is here to stay. 📈 People want out of the fossil fuel rollercoaster. Last night on ITV Robert Peston, Greg Jackson broke down why the countries doubling down on electrification aren't just cleaner - they're building the economies that will leave fossil fuel nations behind. We're not waiting to find out which side of history we land on.

We’ve just acquired a majority stake in Uplight, partnering with Schneider Electric to harness people-powered energy flexibility for millions across North America ⚡️ Electricity demand in the U.S. is surging, driven by AI data centres and the rapid growth of electrotech like EVs, batteries and solar. Utilities need new ways to keep the grid reliable and affordable. Uplight works with over 85 utilities, including eight of the ten largest in the U.S., helping turn customer participation and distributed energy resources into dependable grid capacity. The deal marks a major step for the teams of both Octopus and Kraken – opening the door to accelerate our expansion in the U.S. Together with Kraken, we’ll combine world-class customer and flexibility technologies to scale demand-side response for North American utilities, helping lower costs for consumers while strengthening energy security and grid stability.. Apparently heat pumps don't work, cost a fortune, and your bills will go up… Must have missed that memo. So did our data 🤷 So we did what we always do - showed our working. The Cosy Heat Pump Fleet Performance Dashboard is live. Real performance data from thousands of our heat pumps in real homes across Britain, updated every week. And what's it actually showing? 🔋 80% of Cosy customers are paying less than they would with a gas boiler  📈 The fleet's kicking out 4.12 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity right now - a gas boiler manages 0.85  💷 Customers on Cosy Octopus are saving £219/year on average vs gas We'll let you do the maths on that one.
