We will be shining a spotlight on one of our consultants that is directly making a positive impact on the environment through #tech 🌱🌍 Jennifer Wagstaff originally studied Biotechnology at university before working as a #Science Technician at a local high school. She eventually sparked an interest in #IT where she joined FDM without any prior coding experience. She now works as a Software Developer at one of the largest #Energy companies in the world. “Alongside running practical science lessons as a Science Technician, I took over managing the exam results trackers in #Excel. This led me to become comfortable with basic Excel formulas and macros. FDM picked up on my logical mind and potential IT aptitude and recruited me for the #Java Development stream in their Graduate Programme, without me actually having any prior #coding experience. I am now a Software Developer working on-site with one of FDM’s largest energy clients, where I build IT solutions (usually in .NET/C#) to facilitate trading in power markets, primarily with #renewable assets. I was one of two developers working to set up the second largest offshore wind farm in the world. We collect real-time meter data showing energy production, asset availability data and forecasts. It’s been terrific to work in a project so integral with making renewables profitable, and assisting our grid’s transition into utilising more renewable electricity.” Want to start a tech career that fits your passion? Jennifer Wagstaff reacted on thisJennifer Wagstaff reacted on thisAfter an incredible two years at Paragon Brokers, where I supported the delivery of a full brand refresh and worked with fantastic colleagues on a range of exciting projects, I decided to take a short break to tick off a few bucket-list adventures. Travelling through South America and parts of Central America, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to experience new cultures, food and music. I climbed the Acatenango volcano in Guatemala, trekked the four-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (with a broken shoe!), and took in the Sambadrome in Rio - all while reconnecting with old friends along the way. I’m now back in London and delighted to share that I’ve joined Howden as Senior Marketing Executive for Education and Charity. I’m really looking forward to this next chapter and to working with such a talented and passionate team.

After a fun but slightly weird week settling into life back in London (or, coming to terms with the fact I don’t live in Lisbon anymore!), I’ve thought a bit about how much I’ve learned and changed since I first arrived in that summer of 2021 into a Lisbon emerging from the final pandemic lockdown, and an Embassy navigating the UK’s first full year post EU Exit. I’m taking away loads of great memories, but some highlights for me have to be: ➡️Working with the brilliant Consular team in Lisbon and Portimão to help the 40,000 British residents in Portugal access their residency, driving and healthcare rights under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement ➡️The trust placed in me to lead the programme for UK ministerial and royal participation at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, and a few other VIP visits since ➡️The real privilege of visiting and forging new relationships in Cabo Verde 🇨🇻 since our Embassy took on responsibility for this growing bilateral relationship in early 2024, including an unexpected daytime TV debut alongside Angelina Popovych…! ➡️ Working as a team to enhance policy and operational cooperation on justice and home affairs issues - which I leave safe in the hands of Henrietta Dillon and João Porciuncula do Monte to take much, much further! ➡️ And getting to spend every day with the best team I’ve ever been part of, meet so many Portuguese and Cabo Verdeans across government ministries, NGOs and beyond, and make connections with brilliant diplomats from all over the world that I can call friends, Padel and 10k teammates, fellow travellers and even Mt Pico climbers! Adeus e até breve, Portugal!

I’m positive neither party knew what might happen. What I did learn very quickly, is that this megacorp does eCom. Retail. Loyalty. Aviation. Marine. eMobility. Legal. Technology. The AI. Exploration. eTrading. Marketing. Brand. Sales …and a whole lot more. Building Experience Design [EXD] was like having an end to end Experience agency with an enormous multi sector omnichannel footprint. No way I could have made this work without the people and experiences gained client and agency side that came before. One minute you’re working on a huge eCom platform then later that afternoon a soil / rock sampling application which analysts will use to make billion dollar decisions of where to source core commodities… and literally everything in between. Six and a half years later I’m leaving probably one of the best companies I’ve worked at. Thank you Shell Building and maturing a multi-disciplinary, multi-geography design capability in the hundreds. A working methodology. A unified Design System. A Career pathway. A pipeline from college to real, meaningful work. For those in career transition—the opportunity to explore, reinvent and shine. Real people, developing skills. Delivering value. Together. All with a governance wrapper supported by IT. We saved millions by bringing work in-house and introducing DesignOps. Contributing to billion-dollar projects and introducing design to ways of working, all the while collaborating with some ridiculously smart people throughout the organisation. Best of all? Curating a culture that hands down was the envy of our peers—in and outside the company. Having our work included in Shell’s Brand Expressions proposition was a very cool thing too. I’m incredibly humbled to have had this opportunity. People. Process. Technology. In that order. It works. Fast forward… Things change. New leaders. New visions. I’m confident for all the Thinkers and Makers who, with me, are looking to the future. Heads up. Eyes forward. It’s what we do. It’s what makes us all so different, necessary and utterly amazing. Explore. Empathise. Create. Test and Validate. So…. To the Thinkers and Makers… Believe in YOU. I DO. Keep your eyes peeled for some exciting things I’ve been cooking up. I’ll be working on the performance of OVO's Zero Carbon Living suite of products. From home batteries to heat pumps, I’m eager to dive into the data behind this growing green tech and explore how we can optimize its impact for a sustainable future. Looking forward to contributing to OVO’s Plan Zero commitment to reach net zero by 2035 and connecting with others passionate about decarbonization and clean energy along the way! ☕ P.S.
