I am proud to have contributed to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ updated Maternity Service Standards Framework, published today. It is a practical roadmap to support safer, personalised and consistent maternity care. The framework sets out clear priorities for maternity services across the UK: Key focus areas: 🔹 Governance & leadership – clear accountability and stronger safety systems 🔹 Workforce & supportive culture – safe staffing, training, and empowered teams 🔹 Evidence-based clinical care – personalised care across the maternity pathway 🔹 Antenatal, intrapartum & postnatal standards – clarity at every stage 🔹 Pathways for complex care – robust guidance for medical, obstetric, or mental health needs 🔹 Culture & communication – promoting inclusive, respectful, and culturally safe care for all women and families. We're pleased to reveal our new impact evaluation into hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting. Ten years after the first study, the Hospital Broadcasting Association have published a second independent evaluation of the impact of hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting in the UK. This UK-wide study involved patients and their families, clinical, administrative and management staff in hospitals alongside volunteers from hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting stations themselves.  The research revealed that alongside a huge impact on volunteers, NHS staff and the wider community, hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting has a positive impact on the psychosocial health outcomes for patients; provides much needed social interaction and a sense of calm and reassurance; and helps people to feel like an individual, while enhancing health and wellbeing.  As the NHS rolls out plans for more integrated community-based and preventative healthcare. These national strategies emphasise community care, improved wellbeing and digital transformation, all areas where hospital radio has been evolving for over a decade. 🗣️ Sam Smette, Chair of Trustees, said: “We are pleased to be able to publish this new report into the benefits and value of hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting. The media landscape is changing the way people access and consume radio. In an increasingly crowded market, it’s important that hospital, health and wellbeing radio stations can continue to remain relevant, expand the ways in which audiences listen and engage with, and this latest research captures some of the key shifts shaping that evolution.” 🗣️ Ian Pinnell, Vice-Chair of Trustees said: “This impact evaluation of hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting across the UK shows the continued importance of the work our member stations do, both within the hospital setting, but now within the wider community. While the main focus is still on supporting patients in hospital settings, many of our member stations now broadcast to local communities on DAB, FM and AM, and as more NHS care is moved into community settings such as in patients homes or urgent care centres, this report demonstrates there is still a need for hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasting in the UK. Our member stations are pivotal in delivering that, no matter the platform.” The evaluation report was launched at the HBA’s Annual Conference in Bolton, Greater Manchester, where the Association celebrated 100 years of hospital broadcasting in the UK. This new impact research and report, commissioned by the Hospital Broadcasting Association shows how hospital radio has evolved over the past 10 years, into hospital, health & wellbeing radio, and is well-positioned to help patients as the NHS transitions to prioritise more integrated community-based and preventative healthcare. Winchester Radio was one of the early adopters of the community health & wellbeing community radio model, alongside our long-standing (almost 42 years!) hospital radio service - we've been on-air on 94.7FM across Winchester and the surrounding area for 7 years (to the day!) now, and on DAB digital radio since 2022. This important piece of research validates our operating model. We look forward to continuing to not only entertain and inform patients of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, but also to encourage those in the local community to live healthy, active, socially-connected lives - so that they have quality-of-life as well as longevity.
