In my view, among global central banks, the Bank of England has set the clearest path for ISO 20022 structured data adoption. Why? - Mandatory timelines for Purpose Codes, LEIs, and structured addresses. - Enforcement through CHAPS & the RTGS renewal programme. - A phased, consultative rollout balancing adoption with regulatory certainty. - A vision for cross-border transparency and compliance. 👉 This clarity places the UK CHAPS ahead. But globally, the picture is more fragmented: ⚠️ Legacy systems still resist structured fields. ⚠️ Cross-border corridors break when counterparties don’t align. ⚠️ Compliance burdens fall unevenly across participants. ⚠️ Standards evolve faster than implementations. The outcome: inconsistent, incomplete, and non-interoperable data — undermining the very purpose of ISO 20022. I’m really proud to see one of our key Bankline Transformation milestones go live this week. Bankline Transformation is a multi-year, strategic technology investment which will make Bankline simpler to use, easier for customers to access other NatWest products, and improve the speed we can deliver change by migrating the platform to Amazon Web Services (AWS) (compute, data, and insights). Before the transformation started, the Bankline mobile app wasn’t available to Royal Bank customers. To address this, my team delivered a new multi-brand mobile architecture, designed to scale functionality across our Commercial and Institutional brands. The platform is now cloud-hosted, allowing us to accelerate release cycles, improve service resilience, and lay the groundwork for future enhancements across channels and journeys. Since launch, we’ve added additional enhancements to achieve feature parity across our brands, the latest being digital cheque scanning for Royal Bank customers. Now that we’ve achieved feature parity, we will follow a “build once, deploy once” model.
