Our group has decided to use Egypt as our location. I have traveled to different places in Second Life that represent Egypt. I have tried to interview many different people but we have one question so far that no one that I have interviewed will answer. This question is about their presidential election. I would ask if they knew about the conflict going on in the election and they would either stop responding or they would say they couldn’t answer this question.

After this occurred multiple times I decided to look up what was going on with the election. According to CNN, Egypt is trying to come up with a new constitution. They were hoping that this would be finished before the presidential election in May, in order for the new president to be able to have guidelines and rules to promote. The original constitutional assembly broke up. It was believed that it was over run by Islamists. Because of how much power they held it was thought that the constitution would not properly support the country and it would be in favor of Islamic rule.  Not having a constitution in place will affect the presidential election because who ever is elected will not have rules to follow that a constitution would put in place. Another worry many Egyptians have is that a lot of the progress that has been made in Egypt may fall backwards depending on who is elected. Currently voters do not know who they will be able to vote for in the upcoming election.

This article, “Cosmopolitan Canopy,” by Elijah Anderson makes very valid points. Many times when I am walking around Lexington and I pass by someone I don’t know I look at them and then look forward and act like they are not there. People avoid eye contact with people they pass by without even thinking twice about it. I personally do not agree that race has anything to do with it though.

Downtown Cleveland, Ohio

I grew up 15 minutes south of Cleveland and grew up with a diverse group of people. I was never taught to judge someone by their skin color, so I don’t act differently when I see a black man on the street compared to a white man. There are a lot of creepy people of all skin colors that you can encounter. However, I understand that many people grow up in a different setting. My senior year of high school I moved to Litchfield, Connecticut.

Litchfield is a small historical town. Every house has to be painted a certain color and any home improvement that can be seen from the street has to be passed by the town before you are allowed to do it. In this town there was absolutely no diversity. My graduating class had 80 people in it, and all of them were white. A lot of the people that went to this school were racist because they never really met anyone that was of a different race or ethnicity. They would constantly say harsh things if they did see someone that was different. I understand that they didn’t know any better but I would try to tell them to get to know the person before make such quick judgments.

I realize that everyone judges everyone, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get to know that person. We all have first impressions of someone before they even speak but those impressions can be completely wrong. Just because someone looks different than you does not mean they cannot be a good person or friend.

Professor Appiah first describes The Golden Rule in two different lights. He mention the positive version, “What you wish done to yourself, do to others,” and he mentions the negative side as well, “What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others.” I believe that each of these versions give off very different meanings. One is asking you to do something, when the other version is asking you to avoid doing things. However, both versions are about respecting views that you may not agree with.

I think that his argument used a good example. Talking about how the Jehovah’s Witness would rather die than betray her way of life. Many people would see not getting a blood transfusion as crazy, but in her mind getting the transfusion would be going against everything she believed in. I believe that people do not necessarily have to agree with everyone else’s beliefs, but they should respect them. This is a simple idea that we were taught a young age, but as we grew up many people do not follow it.

This photo shows that many religions have a different way of stating The Golden Rule, but the teacher wouldn’t accept any answer just because it wasn’t quoted from the Bible. All of the other kids had the correct idea, just the wrong source. Many people today are just as judgmental of others because of their religion or way of life.

Another point that I liked that Appiah pointed out was trying to imagine walking in someone else’s shoes. Many people do not take into mind how other people might view a specific topic. People rather just believe in what they think is right and assume everyone believes in the same ideals. Thinking this way will make for hardships when trying to interact with people that are from different areas. I am not even from a different country and I hold very different beliefs than a lot of people that I have met in Kentucky. Just because I may not agree with their way of going about things does not mean that I should judge them. People are brought up differently, and taught different ideals; this does not mean they should be harshly criticized by me or anyone else. It may be easier to believe that your ideas are the “right” ideas, but every once in a while you should take into account how others around you may feel about it, and view your way of life from their eyes before you make judgments about their life.
