Over the course of the previous week I have messaged over 20 people on Second Life in the world Arab Avatar. What I quickly found was that most people were either unable or unwilling to speak to me. Most of the avatars were actually gathered extremely high above the actual city, taking a good five minutes to get there before reaching them. However, even after locating them they still refused to speak to me and continued to go about their business otherwise.

Arab Avatar was the only world that had any avatars in it so it was very disappointing that people would not respond. I had only got one person to respond to me, but they stopped replying very soon after the conversation started and would not answer any of my questions.

The only thing I truly got to enjoy from this experience was being able to see many different types of settings in this one world. It was everything from a detailed city to just a lone square of grass with flowers and work out equipment. Very strange!

From what my group members have told me, all of them have had the same difficulties coming into contact with people in general, much less people who wish to speak to us. One of my group members was lucky enough to interview two people, but for now all I can say is that the cold shoulder I have been receiving is very discomforting. Perhaps it has something to do with me being new or being from the United States. Either way, I’ve been having no luck.

The estate was very much uninhabited when I arrived, myself being the only person there. I could not say whether this community is particularly open or closed considering I have yet to meet a single person here. The community itself is visually appealing. It’s very well done and nice to look at.

There are no people around whatsoever in this estate. I cannot tell whether it is open or closed based on this. Visually, it’s very stunning. It gives me a very “Pirates of The Caribbean” feel.

There are most definitely people in this one. Quite a few people, actually. The more I kept going the more I ran into. The community seems very closed, however. They refused to acknowledge me and would not reply. Other than that, it is very visually appealing. It looks much like a beach resort.

From what I found after reading the bulleted list, most of them tend to agree with what Appiah said. However, there are a few that seem to be a bit different than what Appiah would have stated. For example, feeling “obligated to help others in need” seems to come close to what Appiah said, though it’s not quite there. This relates to the drowning child, where you could save the single child, or sell your clothes to save many.

One of the bullets seems to be repeated, but is slightly rewarded. The second bullet states “don’t impose your beliefs on others.” A later bullet states “respect other’s beliefs.” These could easily be linked into one bullet instead of two, as not forcing your beliefs on someone else is, in itself, a form of respect.

I believe that I, myself, could live by this list. I believe that, however, I may have trouble with strangers not truly being strangers. It would be hard to not see someone as a stranger, and that one might not be easily be used literally. It is hard to put trust in people that you do not know, after all.
