CivilWardress-Feb2014Bella Yan had a great time meeting new friends in Second Life tonight!

She got to meet huxleybnw8 – who quickly got the hang of her new BMW motor bike in the UK Second Life island Sandbox – as well as LoreleiShadows.  You can see Lorelei  here in Bella’s snapshot of her drinking hot chocolate after mastering her awesome red race car.BellaFeed-Feb2014

Bella also got to meet blogginginthetardis – but we didn’t get a picture of him zooming around on his NightHawk motorbike because I was laughing too hard when he zoomed off the sandbox into the sky! He quickly recovered however and, as is the custom in Second Life, never got hurt. He’s an expert at flying anyway…

So, for these three as well as several others, Bella was able to go ahead and invite them to the class group as well as the University of Kentucky SL group.  She splurged and gave everyone $50 Linden to use for shopping sprees (though there’s much to find in freebie stores inworld!) and the notecard for when they interview others in Second Life. Bella also shared landmarks to the UK Perennial Peace Garden and to the Sandbox (where anyone can build or rez objects freely).

We’re going to have fun on Tuesday in the M.I.King Science Library computer lab! Bella has a scavenger hunt planned as well as to review some basics of how to get around inworld.

Today on SL, I began to explore other communities outside of Dee. I met this one avatar at a shop and was surprised at how nice he was. I did not get the derogatory comments I received at the beach before but in fact, compliments and just a person looking to see if I needed any help. I began transporting around SL with him where he was showing me different areas where you could receive free money. After we transported to three places, he asked me if I wanted to go to a dance with him. I, however, had to say no since I had to go to class but I became friends with him.

I was very surprised at how nice everyone is in SL. This guy is just one example of someone who has helped me. Two other girl avatars have given me clothes, skins, and hair for free just out of kindness. This was very interesting for me to see and just reinforced what I have been seeing since playing; the genuine kindness that avatars share in the attempt to make friends and just has a happy environment around them.

Through interactions with the “residents” of Virtual Spain, I have begun to develop and understanding of their individual roles in the community and the nature of the island itself.

Even from the first time that I visited the Island, I got the sense that this was a place built for the visitors: dominating the landscape are a large sculpture (for lack of a better description), numerous intriguing landmarks and, perhaps most importantly, a large, flat plaza in the middle of the Island. Without so much as a single exchanged word, it was easy to see that the purpose of this plaza was much like the purpose of its real-world counterpart: a place for meeting people and general relaxation.

As a throng of avatars danced to the music that seemed to envelop the scene, I witnessed many interactions between others. Some were talking, other dancing together, but overall a sense of community and mutual respect dominated the atmosphere. Why had this happened?

After conducting an interview, I discovered that many of the people there (or so I have been told) are young, as in 20s. This explained several phenomena that I had encountered:

  • A general look of modernity as opposed to a virtual Reconstruction of “Old Spain.”
  • The seemingly rampant insouciance on the part of the “residents” there.
  • The starkly noticeable contrasts between people; that is to say, there were many, uh, unique individuals.

Overall, this island has a much different aura than our original place of study. In general, this seems to be a place for people of many different persuasions to congregate, get to know one another and just have a good time. Though one is likely to encounter people of virtually all flavours, one thing seems to unite them: they are Spanish, and proud of it.
