It seems that people are buzzing about Apple in the realm of technology these days. This is hardly surprising; when are people not buzzing about every single thing that Apple does? However, what did surprise me is that scrolling down the CNN Technology webpage, four out of the first seven articles were all about Apple.

It appears as though even without it’s CEO and founder, Steve Jobs, Apple is still going strong. They nearly doubled their profits last quarter thanks to “stronger-than-expected” iPhone sales. I’m not sure why anyone would be shocked by this, though. Whenever Apple comes out with a new product, whether it be a new version of the iPhone, iPad or iPod, customers around the world flock to stores to buy it. Even if the product weren’t very good (which rarely happens), people would still buy it because it’s an Apple product. The iPad rose quickly in the ranks and is now Apple’s best-selling product.

So what does this mean for consumers? Is Apple taking over the world? Are their products really the best, or is it just the brand name that we like? Are other technological companies going to go bankrupt because Apple is outselling them? These are the questions that I think about when scrolling through a technology webpage and seeing so many articles about Apple…

Yesterday (or technically, two days ago) I was able to get into contact with several individuals in the realm I’m working in, “FRANCE3D.” It’s pretty interesting stuff; I speak a bit of French and soccham speaks a little bit as well, but xB3LIEVEinBLUEx speaks none. We’ve tried to mess around a bit with a translator device on the game but to no avail.. Nonetheless, we’ve done our best to utilize freetranslation.com and google translate, with the former being a more accurate translation that puts our questions into words that the people we interview would more easily understand.

We’ve been using a set of questions translated into French from our original questions and have been copy and pasting them into dialogues. I’ve had a bit of fun trying to translate on my own what everyone’s saying; it’s very interesting to see how their language is used informally compared to our own. For example, both say “lol” but the French say “mdr” instead of “lmao” (another common saying).

While the topical focus of this class is an anthropology and cosmopolitanism, it is also largely about technology (hence, it’s a part of the “Wired” program) because we are doing our research through an online game and blogging about it on the internet. As a student living in Keeneland, we are a part of the beginnings of major changes not only in the way that we learn, but in the way that we live as well, and I think it is important for us to question these things. Technology is advancing exponentially, and things could be radically different even by the time that we graduate. I found this video when I was surfing YouTube, and aside from being mind-blowing, I think that it is very thought-provoking when it comes to where we might actually be in 2019.

I happened to stumble upon this because I was talking with my dad, who owns a business solutions company, about what will happen when we don’t need paper anymore. Much of what his business does involves either making copies and prints or selling copiers and printers for other businesses, and he told me that what they do probably won’t be necessary 15-20 years from now, and that they’ll most likely have to sell their company. This was a somewhat depressing thing for me to hear because I remember when I was younger and he always took me with him to work and I played with the copiers, but it also made sense.

In terms of cosmopolitanism, the internet and cell phones already make communicating with people around the world extremely convenient and more accessible than ever, but if we could do things like the beginning of this video suggests, we would be able to achieve even more. With the end of paper, technology is a green solution, but could it also provide solutions to world conflicts? Could technology provide us with the ultimate cosmopolitan canopy?
