The Wise have long known the power of words to shape reality. In late summer 2009, I posted a simple candle ritual which I’ve recently revised and started using again. Both are simple, beautiful, and (for me) evoke strong emotion – I just felt the words could be shifted to enhance the affirmation’s power.

What it was:

May I be like this candle – a gentle and unwavering light in the world, radiating warmth and illuminating truth.

What it has become:

Like the flame upon this candle, may the unwavering light of my soul radiate warmth, illuminate truth, and shine through all levels of my being.

And so it is.

I’ve taken to reciting the following each day before beginning my morning meditation, as I light a candle on my altar. I’ve found it quite moving and profound, in spite of its simplicity:

May I be like this candle – a gentle and unwavering light in the world, radiating warmth and illuminating truth.

And So It Is.

Though I’d been completing the precursors to this ritual subconsciously, on a conscious level the ritual itself was completely spontaneous. In retrospect, I wonder if this is why it was such a profound experience for me.

I had been feeling out of sorts for several days. Mired waste-deep in mud is probably a more accurate description of how I’d been feeling – the absolute essence of the rune Ehwaz, reversed. I went into the room where my altar is and closed the door. Everything that came after was intuited, and it all flowed together strikingly well.

Before I launch into the ritual itself, I want to briefly belabor something witches with far more experience than I have stressed in their writings: Intention and emotional connection to a spell’s outcome trump every other factor. I was in desperate need of the healing that this spell catalyzed – my intent was focused and I was emotionally engaged. This is why my working has been successful. Though factors like the position of the moon and other celestial bodies, the correspondences chosen, (oils, herbs, etc.), and the use of ritual tools can certainly help a spell, they do not make or break it. It is not what you use, it’s how you use it.

That said here are the materials I chose:

  • White sage (also called “Grandfather Sage”), for cleansing/purifying.
  • Sweetgrass, for innocence.
  • Loose tobacco, for offering to the Deities and creating sacred space.
  • Essential oils of sage (for cleansing), basil (for protection), and coriander (for transformation – linked with the element of fire) – a drop or two of each added to the sage/sweetgrass/tobacco mixture. (Be careful not to add too much or your mixture won’t ignite.) I was called to use cedarwood oil initially, but didn’t have any. Cedarwood oil is grounding and purifying.
  • Optional: charcoal burner in heat safe container for burning the mixture created from the ingredients above. (I didn’t use one for my ritual; I simply combined the ingredients in my “heat-safe” container – a large abalone shell – and fanned the small flame while I conducted the ritual. Use whatever method works best for you.)
  • Black candle, symbolizing the death of the Victim, or a white candle to symbolize the birth of the Warrior (I used black.)
  • Music that moves you and something to play it on (this is very important). Suggestion: almost anything by Loreena McKennitt. The Mystic’s Dream, All Soul’s Night, Kecharitomene, Santiago, The Mummer’s Dance, and The Old Ways are a few of my favorites. (Follow this link to preview songs from her most recent album. Her earlier work can be found on iTunes.) If possible, loop your music so it can play continuously.

The ritual itself follows. If you decide to work this magick, don’t hesitate to add/delete/change as you see fit to make it your own.

  1. Start your music. (You may want to choose a selection of songs that grow in intensity as they play. For example, the playlist I created started with a couple songs that were very peaceful and contemplative. As the last peaceful song ended, another that was more upbeat and passionate began. I ended the ritual with another peaceful, relaxing song.)
  2. Light your sage/tobacco/sweetgrass/oil smudge.
  3. Smudge yourself and your sacred space.
  4. If possible take your heat-safe smudge pot in your hands as you offer thanks to the Deities, the Earth Mother, your guides, and all beings of Love and Light in the Universe. With joy and humility, invite these to join you in your magickal working. I also invited the element of fire to my ritual – asking that it lend its passionate, transformative presence to my working.
  5. I was not lead to cast a circle for this working. Cast one if you desire. If you choose not to, instead see intense, living, loving white light enveloping you, the room you’re standing in (if any), and your entire home (if inside). The white light is less to “protect” you and more to raise your vibration.
  6. Light your chosen candle, reaffirming its purpose in your mind (i.e. to celebrate the death of the Victim or the birth of the Warrior).
  7. DANCE. There is a technique in shamanism called Dancing the Power Animal. Think of an animal you’ve felt drawn to. Imagine yourself transforming into that animal, and move as you envision it would move. As you dance, feel your energy and passion rise to a fever pitch. As you become the power animal, see/feel/know that you are casting off the energy of the Victim. As you dance, take deep breaths of bright white light from above – see/feel/know that this light is filling your entire being. Perceive the energy of the Warrior entering every part of you, filling you with courage and strength. Exhale sharply, seeing the grey, heavy energy of the Victim being expelled. Continue dancing, breathing in, and exhaling as long as you feel engaged and enlivened. As the last of your energy is spent, your heart racing and the energy of the Warrior lighting you up like a lightning rod in a thunderstorm, kneel to the ground. Place your forehead and both palms on the floor/ground. Inhale and exhale no less than three times. As you do this, see/feel/know that you and the energy you raised are grounding fully into the earth, leaving you fully present in your body, energized, peaceful, and aware of your surroundings.
  8. When you feel ready stand and give thanks to the Deities, the Earth Mother, your guides and power animal(s), any of the elements you called, and all beings of Love and Light in the Universe.
  9. Extinguish your candle if it’s still burning, and extinguish your smudge.
  10. Drink LOTS of water over the next three days (8-12 glasses or so – use your own judgment). You’ll want to flush out the energy of the Victim you released by working this ceremony.
  11. Record any insights you receive during waking hours or while asleep in your Book of Shadows or journal.

Blessed Be!

Jerome

In Part II I discussed the Warrior’s shadow, the Victim. Becoming clear about the characteristics of the Victim helped me identify the beliefs I was carrying that interfered with my growth. But realizing where I was stunted and resolving to heal these areas was only part of the process. Because what we focus on is what we experience, it’s also necessary to turn our thoughts to new and empowering beliefs when we’re trying to replace the outmoded ones. To uncover these new beliefs I asked myself, “Who is the Warrior to me?” This is what I came up with:

Walking like the Warrior, or “Contract with my Selves”

  1. I will not allow myself to be victimized by the words, actions, or thoughts of others.
  2. I will not allow myself to be victimized by my own words, actions, or thoughts.
  3. I thank the Victim for showing me the path to the Warrior. With gratitude and compassion I now dismiss the Victim, and bid him farewell for the rest of this lifetime and beyond.
  4. I will not ignore my highest good or hide from the growth that leads me there.
  5. I will allow myself to feel my emotions.
  6. I will not allow myself to wallow in my emotions, or to shut down and hide from the opportunities for growth they present.
  7. I will walk with dignity, self-respect, and humility. I will honor myself and my gifts without being arrogant.
  8. At all times and in all ways, I will look on myself and others with compassion.
  9. At all times I will acknowledge and appreciate myself and others.
  10. I will see Love in every situation – its presence, the lack of it, the need for it, or the opportunity to create more of it.
  11. I will not allow my external reality to affect my inner peace.
  12. I have decided to have joy, peace, passion, and prosperity in my life, and I will not settle for anything less.
  13. I believe I’m worthy and capable of living a life guided by these principles, and will not give energy to thoughts that say otherwise.

Many of these have been inspired by the book Living with Joy by Sanaya Roman. (Scroll down to the “Book Club Selection” widget in the right margin for info on the book.)

Tomorrow in Part 4, I’ll share the culmination of this process – the healing ritual I recently performed.

Love and Light,

Jerome

In The Birth of the Warrior Part I, I shared an affirmation that served as the foundation for a powerful healing ritual I recently performed. In today’s post I’d like to discuss the shadow the Warrior cannot exist without, the Victim.

The Victim is that part of me that values safety above all else. It doesn’t matter what must be sacrificed to maintain this safety – fulfilling relationships, financial prosperity, personal growth, joy, health – none of these are more important than avoiding pain. He believes in status quo, in not rocking the boat, and in keeping everyone else happy – even if doing so means he’s miserable. He values everyone’s opinion except his own, believes the world is unfriendly, and is convinced daydreams are a waste of time. He believes if you cower in a corner and try not to be noticed, you’re less likely to be ridiculed.

As if the experiences at the root of these feelings weren’t unpleasant enough, we’re also conditioned to feel bad about feeling them! Society tells us the Victim is wrong. We’re told to buck up, toe the line, make no excuses, and deal with life – period. This is particularly true for men. What are sons told when they come crying to their fathers because they’ve skinned their knees? “Big boys don’t cry.” What does this really teach little boys? That it’s not okay to be weak. If you can stand to watch the evening news, look for any of the numerous examples of the damage this causes – domestic violence, chemical dependency, war – it all tracks back.

After years of trying to defeat the Victim within by making him wrong, I’ve finally realized that the only way I can leave him behind is to love him. I’ve started thanking him for keeping me safe during my childhood, and reassuring him that the people who hurt me then can’t hurt me now. I’ve started telling him, gently but firmly, that his part in my growth is done – that it’s time for him to leave so the Warrior can arrive.

With gratitude and compassion I dismiss the Victim. Let the Warrior now be born!

So now I know where I’ve been – but do I know where I’m going? In Part 3 I’ll share who the Warrior is to me.

I thank the Victim for showing me the path to the Warrior. With gratitude and compassion I now dismiss the Victim, and bid him farewell for the rest of this lifetime and beyond. Let the Warrior now be born!

Yesterday I did a spontaneous ritual centered on this affirmation. It comes from what I’ve named “The Contract with my Selves,” a list of 13 affirmations I’ve created to aid me in moving into the position of the Warrior and away from the position of the Victim.

Without conscious intent, this affirmation fell onto the page as item number 3, which numerologically is associated with birth energy – the result of the union between numbers 1 and 2. It’s neat that it came in this order, given its emphasis on the “Birth of the Warrior.” If we quiet our minds, still our bodies and ask for guidance, it really does come.

This ritual was very positive and powerfully transformative. I’m looking forward to sharing it in detail.

In tomorrow’s post, Part 2 of 4, I’ll give some background regarding my experience with the Victim and share the key role s/he plays in our spiritual and emotional growth. Wednesday I’ll discuss the role of the Warrior in Part 3, and on Thursday in Part 4 I’ll post the complete details of the ritual for any who’d like to work it on their own.

Happy Ostara!

The vernal equinox is a time when rebirth and renewal are celebrated in many religious and spiritual traditions. For me it’s a happy time that marks the end of winter’s darkness and beginning of longer days and nicer weather. In years past it was a time when the earth was tilled, seeds were planted, and hopes of an abundant harvest filled the minds of many.

Here’s a simple and enjoyable ritual you can use to connect with the earth and use the power of the runes to help you manifest what you desire.

Materials you’ll need:

  1. Handful of beans OR a Chia Pet (or similar product).
  2. If using beans, you’ll also need a medium sized pot filled 2/3 full with soil and some plastic wrap.

After gathering these, decide what rune’s energy you’d like to manifest more of in your life. A few suggestions are given below, along with links to more.

Wealth

Fehu, rune of nourishment and wealth

Who couldn’t use more prosperity? Use Fehu to manifest money.

Remember that showing gratitude for what you’ve already been given naturally attracts more…

          Love

Inguz, the Rune of FertilityAre you ready for a relationship that’s mutually beneficial in all ways? One in which you love passionately and are passionately loved in return? One in which you teach and are taught, give joy and receive it, nurture and are nurtured? Plant Ingwaz!

When using this rune for love magick, allow the Universe to bring you the best and highest relationship possible by focusing on the qualities you desire in a mate rather than on a specific person. The latter interferes with that person’s free will – something that is not only unethical, but also won’t bring you what you truly desire.

Personal Power

Perth

Are you depressed, sad, or angry more frequently than you’re happy and at peace? Use Perth to help you remember that you have the right and the power to choose how you feel, regardless of your circumstances.

     Protection

Algiz, rune of protection and refuge

Are you feeling drained by others? Is every inch you’re giving being taken a mile? Use Algiz to help you create healthy boundaries. This rune’s energy can also be used to make and keep your home a peaceful refuge.

More rune meanings can be found here and here.

Once you have your magickal goal in mind, strengthen your intent by doing any of #1-#3, plus #4:

  1. Imagine how you’ll feel when you have more of the desired energy in your life. Feel how empowered and peaceful you are. Make this real for yourself! Our imaginations are an in-road to our Higher Selves, and ultimately to the Divine.
  2. Visualize yourself moving through your life with more of the desired quality. What does that look like for you? (Remember – do not attach yourself to specifics. Focus on the essence, and allow the Universe to bring you the form. Doing this will help the Universe bring you what you desire in the quickest and most efficient way.)
  3. Focus on the image of the rune you’ll plant, either in your mind or with your eyes. Hold it in your mind or look at it for as long as you can, feeding the emotions and/or images from #1 and #2 into it.
  4. Hold your beans or Chia seeds in your hands. Take a deep breath, feeling and/or seeing bright white loving light entering your lungs. Exhale this breath onto your seeds, and feel your magickal goal infuse them.

With your goal still firmly in mind, prepare your pot of soil or Chia product.

If using a pot of soil, smooth the surface and use your finger to make small holes no deeper than your first knuckle, one for each bean. As you plant your beans, think about/visualize/feel what concrete, real-world things you’ll do going forward to help manifest what you desire. Simply planting the beans is not enough! You must meet the Universe half way. When finished, water the soil and place plastic wrap over the top. Store your pot in a warm place, like on top of the refrigerator (the heat will help them sprout). Check your pot regularly – if the soil dries out, be sure to water it. When the beans sprout, you can move them to another location in your home or plant them in your garden (if it’s warm enough where you are). Every time you see or water your rune, remember your goal and see/feel it manifesting as the plants grow.

If using the Chia, prepare the seeds as instructed. But instead of spreading them over the entire surface of the terra cotta, spread them in the shape of your rune. You may find it helpful to arrange the Chia seeds in longer lines about the width of your finger. Echoing what I said above, as you spread the seeds think about/visualize/feel what concrete, real-world things you’ll do going forward to help manifest what you desire. Simply planting the seeds is not enough! You must meet the Universe half way. Every time you see or water your rune, remember your goal and see/feel it manifesting as the Chia grows.

If your seeds don’t sprout, you may need to rethink your goal. Are you too attached to the exact form of your manifestation? If careful thought and reflection reveals this to be true, try again – and let the Universe fill in the details. 🙂

I’ve shied away from posting spells on this site up until now, for a few reasons.

Those unaware of its true nature and origins – Christian fundamentalists and Wiccans/Neo-Pagans alike – make inaccurate assumptions about witchcraft. These assumptions have long distorted the truth of what it is and is not – a quagmire impossible to remedy with a single post on a little-known blog. While I don’t claim to know everything there is to know about The Craft, I do know it is not many of the things close-minded religious zealots and novice Neo-Pagans think it is. I’ll write more on this topic in the future, but for now I offer this:

Witchcraft is nothing more and nothing less than focused intent united with action. It does not spring from anything supernatural or inherently evil. Christian religions have been practicing it for centuries, though they’ve given it names like prayer and communion.

Contrary to popular Wiccan opinion, witchcraft as we know it today is not ancient – it’s probably less than 200 years old. (Read Dr. Ronald Hutton’s book Triumph of the Moon to learn more).

Also, casting a spell you find on the internet or within the pages of that book you bought at Barnes & Noble won’t yield the results you desire unless you invest personal time and energy. (That is, more than using a search engine or handing the clerk your debit card).

Disclaimers behind us, here is a short and simple spell I use regularly to focus protective energy on my pentacle necklace. It can be adapted as you wish and can be used on any type of jewelry.

*** *** ***

Holding the pendant in my left hand, I raise it skyward and extend index finger and thumb (tips pointing up) with the other fingers holding the jewelry. (This hand gesture is symbolic of the crescent moon and the Goddess, or the feminine aspect of the Divine.)

“By the grace of the Goddess [insert name of a particular Goddess if you wish]…”

(As you speak these words, perceive the Divine Feminine in any way you wish. Make it real for yourself. Sometimes I see Her face, sometimes I feel Her feminine energy wash over me.)

Moving the pendant to my right hand, I again raise it skyward with my index and middle fingers pointing upward and the other fingers holding the pendant. (This hand gesture is symbolic of the Horned God, or the masculine aspect of the Divine.)

“By the grace of the God [insert name of particular God if you wish]…”

(As you speak the words above, perceive the Divine Masculine in any way you wish. Sometimes I see His face, sometimes I feel His masculine energy.)

“And by my own will, I now don this sacred symbol to protect me from all types of harm – and to illuminate the Path of Power before me. So mote it be!”

As I speak the last part above, I trace an invoking pentagram on the face of the pendant. (Refer to the illustration below. Using your index finger, trace an unbroken line from point 1 to point 5 and back to 1 while visualizing blue-white fire illuminating the path you trace. Blue-white is a protective color, and fire is the element that rules protective magick.)

Invoking pentagram
