There’s no sugar coating this rune’s message. Hagalaz is CHAOS and CHANGE! I’m just beginning to learn that these things don’t have to be painful and dramatic – they only become so when I am unwilling to let the old ways die so the new can be born.

In the midst of my current transition I’ve been trying to manage my stress by getting more exercise (added bonus – it also helps me sleep better). As I pulled into my driveway after returning from the gym this evening, I saw something beautiful that captured the essence of Hagalaz.

The weather here has been stormy – lots of wind and rain but with occasional sun breaks. As I got out of my car my eyes caught the flailing limbs of the trees behind my house. While partially shadowed by clouds and pummeled by wind, the sun also shone on their leaves. The limbs bent with the howling wind, moving with it instead of against it, while the leaves danced in the light of the setting sun.

Watching this I resolved to embrace the chaos surrounding me. I decided to be the master of the uncertainty I feel now (and have felt every time I’ve transitioned in the past) rather than allow it to master me.

I will dance in the wind like the trees, keeping my eyes fixed on the sun beyond the leaden clouds. I will trust that the new path will steadily become clearer. I will embrace the chaos.

What is most important for me to know about my life right now?

The overview of your life right now: Ehwaz, reversed

You are in a place of stagnation, of lack of forward movement. I see you looking for a path to follow and seeing several, but being hesitant to choose one.

 Your current challenge: Gebo, converse

You have many gifts – the strength of the Warrior and the power to deflect people and situations that don’t serve you are among these. These are either currently unrecognized, or are recognized and are not being used by choice.

Action you’re being directed to take: Ihwaz

This rune offers reassurance that this time of transition won’t last forever. Persevere, get clear about what and who you want and do not want in your life, and use your gifts to create those outcomes. I see you taking walks at night, in a secluded area? If this is not something you currently do, it may be a good way for you to relax and get out of your head. I also feel a draw toward what some would call the “dark arts?” If this is the case, this rune simultaneously cautions you against that path while reassuring you that you can protect yourself provided you don’t get in over your head.

Love and Light,

Jerome

What is this, and how can I participate?

What is the Wisdom of the Runes concerning the space that I am now [in] spiritually?

As I asked my guides and yours this question, these are the runes I drew and the information I received:

Overview: Isa, converse

You are in a place of discovery. In some ways your spiritual journey is just beginning, though you are not what some would call a “novice.” I see you being drawn to spiritual systems that may not completely resonate with you, but that you choose to pursue because the information is readily available and/or because it is what those around you are pursuing. Isa, converse brings a caution against ignoring what your gut tells you about the threshold of spiritual awakening you’re approaching. Don’t rush into a way of thinking or being simply because you feel you should. To do so will not be beneficial and will turn you away from where your spiritual strengths dwell.

Isa is also linked to ice, and hence to the element of water – which I feel is very pronounced in you. Water is the element of healing and deep transformation. Within this energy lies your true identity and what you have come into this life to do for others and for the planet. I see a gift with therapeutic touch and/or energy work of some kind. I also see the butterfly, another symbol linked with transformation.

Challenge: Ingwaz, converse

The challenge Ingwaz, converse reveals is the difficulty you’re having finding that space within where you feel at peace spiritually. Your spiritual growth and wellness is very important to you – do not settle for less than you truly desire. The counsel offered by this rune is simply to persevere. Also consider that nothing external can give you the peace you seek – it must be found within before it can be experienced without.

Action: Eihwaz

Rune of Defense

This rune signals the spiritual transition you’re currently steeped in. This rune is very beneficial – it speaks to your ability to avert danger and achieve your goal, if you persevere. Persevering means accepting the change you’re undergoing rather than resisting it, and trusting that all you’re encountering right now is designed to move you toward your highest good and most joyous potential. Not an easy task, but one you have the power to accomplish if you choose to.

Beyond these things, I saw something else I’d like to share. I saw the spirit of a child in your aura, and it feels like a child that you have not yet given birth to. This child appears as a green spark to me – and I feel an almost overwhelming sense of joy.

Love and Light,

Jerome

Yesterday I drew Raido (RYE-doh), converse. Pronunciation audio provided by Oswald the Runemaker.

(Converse means the rune came into my hand face-down.)

Raido, the Rune of the Journey

One meaning of Raido converse is a meeting that yields something unexpected.

One of my hats is that of a real estate professional. I met with a potential buyer yesterday, a younger man with big dreams – one of which is purchasing a multi-million dollar apartment building. Because he makes less than what’s needed to purchase a one-bedroom condo and has bad credit, I had to carefully validate his dreams while compassionately bringing him back down to reality.

I talked with him about how buying less than the ideal now (a studio condo) and progressively upgrading to a more expensive property every 3-5 years could help him reach his goal in 15 years or so. (I live in one of the few real estate markets in the country where home values are still appreciating, albeit slower than in the past.) He wasn’t having it – he wants what he wants right now and isn’t willing to wait 3 years, let alone 15.

As I watched him talk about what he wanted – his eyes aglow and his gestures animated – I realized I was seeing a reflection of myself 10 years ago. We should all have big dreams – dreams that should never be allowed to crumble under the weight of day-to-day living and circumstance. But what this man lacks (and what I have always struggled with) is the will and the patience to make dreams become realities.

And so my meeting with him yielded something unexpected: the realization that the only ways for me to achieve my dreams are hard work and patience. There are no shortcuts.

When you draw Raido converse, become receptive and observant when meeting with others. Look for an unexpected opportunity for growth.

Today’s Rune is Fehu, reversed (FAY-hoo). Pronunciation audio provided by Oswald the Runemaker.

Fehu, reversed

One possible meaning for this rune is “health problems.”

Something I enjoy about the runes is how literal and straightforward their messages are.  Sometimes this is so much the case that it’s humorous, as with Fehu’s message for me today.

I didn’t think much of this rune after drawing it early this morning. As the day progressed, I realized I was having serious stomach issues (to put it politely). These weren’t so serious that I was incapacitated, but were serious enough to be a real distraction.  About half way through the day I remembered drawing this rune, and had to chuckle.

The moral of the story? Avoid eating Korean BBQ if you don’t want to see Fehu, reversed. 🙂

Today’s Rune is Sowulo (soh-VOO-low), converse.

Sowelu, Rune of Lifeforce and Wholeness

Keyword: Wholeness

Duality: Masculine

Element: Fire (the Sun)

(Converse means the rune came into my hand face down.)

The spiritual principle Sowulo embodies is complete and utter wholeness – mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. The journey toward wholeness (and what “wholeness” means) is different for everyone. It’s a winding road with change and self-discovery at every turn.

Sowulo converse indicates the path to wholeness isn’t currently visible – it lies in the dark, waiting to be illuminated. Receiving this rune is a good opportunity to get honest with yourself about what wholeness means to you. Approach this with the knowledge that your quest for wholeness is yours alone – convincing yourself that you need a specific person or object(s) to be whole will bring you discontent at best, and absolute misery at worst. Beyond this allow yourself the freedom to answer honestly and without self-censorship, and don’t feel like your decisions are set in stone. What wholeness meant to you 10 years ago is probably different from what it means today, and will likely be different again 10 years from now.

Today, Sowulo converse reflects the anxiety I’m feeling about the uncertain direction of my career. I have a lot of unanswered questions. Should I stay or go? Where/how will I be most fulfilled? Which choice will bring me the most joy and prosperity?

Though it’s easier said than done, it really does come down to just deciding what I want. Getting clear about how I define wholeness will help.

Today’s rune is Ansuz (ON-sooze), converse. Pronunciation audio provided by Oswald the Runemaker.

(Converse means the rune came into my hand face down.)

Ansuz, the rune of messages

Key concepts: Hidden messages/information to be discovered; avoiding denial.

A message isn’t getting through – the truth is being obscured.

Today I’ll pay closer attention to the messages I receive from others, and allow my discernment to help me determine truth.

In retrospect, this rune’s lesson for me today was to avoid letting my insecurities convince me that everyone’s “out to get me.”

I tend to be over-sensitive to criticism. It’s a humorous dynamic I suppose…I find fault in myself easily, so I expect others to do the same (and then I’m surprised and dismayed when they do!).  I’m working on a somewhat difficult and time-consuming project at work, and today two colleagues were discussing ways it could perhaps be done more efficiently. My knee-jerk reaction was to take their scrutiny and suggestions personally, but I later realized I was reading things into their feedback that weren’t really there.

The message – the truth that was obscured – was that I am more than adequate for any task I’m presented with.

(I wrote this while offline yesterday…)

Today’s rune is Ingwaz.

Inguz, the Rune of Fertility

The energy of this rune has affinity with the Third Fourth (heart) Chakra.

Today I have the energy, focus, will, and inspiration to bring recent endeavors to a successful conclusion.

It’s fitting this rune should come on the last day of the year.

Typically I don’t believe in what some call “omens” or fate. These related concepts are rendered impotent by free will and the ripples of cause and effect it creates.

That said, I feel strongly that drawing this rune on the last day of the year bodes well for 2008.  May it be the same for you and those you love, in accordance with the free will of all.

🙂

Today’s Rune is Algiz (UHL-heeze), reversed. Pronunciation audio provided by Oswald the Runemaker.

Algiz, Rune of Protection, Boundaries, and Open Space

Keywords: Encroachment, Trespass

Today I’m being warned to be aware of trespasses against me, as well as against trespassing upon others.

Is there someone to whom you’ve given an inch, and they’re taking a mile? Are they pressing your boundaries, and not respecting your time and energy? Before you fly off the handle and “put them in their place,” consider that they may not be aware they’re stepping over the line. Your first step should be gentle self-reassertion. If this doesn’t work, reassert yourself more firmly. You will know if this meaning applies to your situation because you will be (in the least) drained of energy and (at the most) in fight or flight mode.

Conversely, is there a person you’re railroading into thinking and/or behaving like YOU think they should? Are you having difficulty respecting someone else’s boundaries? This lack of respect could be as seemingly harmless as a slight (but ill-timed) chiding. Be cautious of needlessly adding to the burdens another is carrying.

Carnac the MagnificentWhether on the streets of New Orléans or in that quaint shop down the road that reeks of Nag Champa incense, psychic readers are found plying their craft in many places.

Perhaps you’ve been curious what one of these “fortune tellers” would tell you about your life, your relationship, or your career. Maybe you’re feeling unsure about a particular course of action, and are wondering if having a reading would clarify your options. So what’s stopping you? Maybe you’re unsure how the process works. If so, this uncertainty is probably tied to one or more of the following questions:

• How do you know if a particular reader is “good”?
• Which tool is most accurate? Is it better to have a reading with tarot cards, runes, crystals, or nothing at all?
• Will the psychic be able to see all my deep, dark secrets?

Reader Qualifications

Everyone has psychic potential (yes, everyone). It’s true some are born with greater psychic sensitivity than others, but that doesn’t mean a “born psychic” will be any more accurate than a “trained” one. Psychic sensitivity is a skill, and can be developed and honed just like any other. It sends up a red flag when I see things like “natural born psychic,” “hereditary psychic,” or “So-And-So has been psychic for many lifetimes” printed on other readers’ brochures or business cards. Though I had pronounced psychic ability from a young age, I feel like trumpeting this on my printed marketing materials would be slightly pretentious and a little sensational.

That said it’s alright to ask a reader how long they’ve provided readings. Get a feel for their experience and talk with them about how they work. Do they offer an audio recording of your session? What tool(s) do they use, if any (tarot cards, runes, etc.)? Why did they choose that tool? Check in with yourself emotionally and mentally. Do you feel comfortable with this person? If so, ask for the reading. If not, don’t hesitate to leave and seek out another reader who is a better fit.

Many of the most skilled and in-demand readers share a common profile:

  • They share their gifts in ways that encourage and support the growth of their clients while also creating joy and prosperity for themselves.
  • They communicate the information they receive accurately, truthfully, compassionately, and without ego or judgement.
  • They enjoy reading for clients who place value on personal growth.
  • They attempt to help clients reframe disempowering questions to uncover the underlying opportunities for growth. For example, Is my partner cheating on me? becomes What can I do to experience deeper love and trust in my relationship? and Will I be rich someday? becomes What can I do to find work that is prosperous and joyful?
  • They may refuse to read for clients unwilling to accept responsibility for their own growth. Clients who can’t make a decision without consulting their psychic or those who believe they are victims of circumstance are good examples. It is not a reader’s place to tell anyone else what to do or how to live. While unscrupulous readers will happily take these people’s money and tell them what they want to hear, the best readers will not. Instead they’ll encourage the client to recognize their beauty and worth by claiming their lessons as their own.

Also I don’t ask my clients to verbalize their questions before I begin an in-person or phone reading, though I’ve met many readers that do. One way isn’t necessarily right and the other wrong, but I have found (through self-observation and by observing other readers) that those who ask you to speak your question aloud may be doubting themselves and/or be more focused on telling you what you want to hear instead of what they truly see.

Which tool is most accurate? Are tarot cards better than runes?

Society at large is probably most familiar with the tarot cards, which usually comes to mind first when one thinks of psychic readings. In truth there are as many ways to give a psychic reading as there are people offering them. Some use tarot, some use runes. Others may use your palms, crystals, coins, or pendulums. Some might use nothing at all! So how do you know what kind of reading is best?

Tarot cards, runes, etc. are like any other tool – they don’t do the work by themselves. One is not inherently “better” or more accurate than any other. It’s the skill, intent, and integrity of the reader that makes the difference. Let me say that again – it’s the skill, intent, and integrity of the reader that makes the difference.

I’ve studied the Elder Futhark Runes for almost 20 years, and have used them to give psychic readings for about 15. I’ve read at a few different locations in the greater Seattle, Washington area including the occult bookstore I owned for a couple of years. I’ve spent many hours reading, meditating, and writing on the meanings of the runes. Experience is not the only measure of skill, but it does play a prominent role.

Will the psychic be able to see things I don’t want them to?

Maybe, maybe not. But a reader with integrity won’t judge you on what they see. The best readers out there are actively working toward greater self-improvement and are humbled and honored by a request to assist you with yours.

The bottom line? Take your time, ask questions, and find a reader you “click” with. Focus more on how you feel when you’re with them instead of what they say in their brochure or how many tarot decks they have.
