  1. I read this yesterday but I had to sleep on this before commenting to reduce scorching.
Many people have two major errors in their thought processes. The first is the “gift” of hindsight, where after a tragic outcome many conclude they could have seen the outcome beforehand. The second is wishful thinking where people deeply want a less than tragic outcome, ignoring or diminishing and not act appropriately to the clues provided to them.
Calling 911 can be necessary and useful, but may not be a timely resolution to a problem. When someone has an arterial bleed, a tourniquet and direct compression needs to be applied immediately. If someone is choking or their heart stops, clearing the airway or starting chest compressions needs to be initiated immediately. Waiting for the first responders because they can do the job better can lead to that tragic outcome that you do not want.
Having a fire extinguisher handy and knowing how to use is a good thing. Having working smoke detectors and CO detectors are a good thing. Having an evacuation plan is a good thing. Having first aid training is a good thing. Having firearms and spare ammunition at the ready with training in their use, proficiency and resolve to use them to protect yourself and loved ones are good things. Have the firearm in hand when calling 911 and use the firearm if necessary.
Having 911 respond onsite within five minutes is mostly wishful thinking and depends on availability of resources, distance, weather and traffic. Do call them when needed, but some things need to happen now and cannot wait for others. Do not depend on luck if you are unwilling to do your part in being prepared. That would not be wishful thinking but would be dreaming.

BTW Be prepared to serve on a jury and disagree with the arguments made by the prosecutor if an uninvited person gets shot in someone’s home. That would be an error in the uninvited person’s thought processes.
