Nature Magazine: The Sky Is Falling. Or Maybe Not

From John Sexton at Hot Air: Nature Retracted a Study Predicting Global Economic Catastrophe

In April of 2024, the scientific journal Nature published an article titled "The economic commitment of climate change." The conclusion of the paper's authors was that climate change would lead to spectacular catastrophe for the world's economy both in the medium term and the longer term. This message, that the world's hair was on fire because of climate change, was immediately picked up and spread far and wide by the media.

Central Banks jumped on the insanity to set policy, because of course they did.

In other words, this wasn't just more screechy climate catastrophism it was going to have a major impact on banks around the globe. Only it turned out the paper all of this was based on was bogus. Those terrible predictions were not supportable.

In fact, it turned out that most of the bad news was the result of data for just one country: Uzbekistan.

It took more than a year for the report to be retracted. It was retracted last week.

Why should the public trust Nature when it chooses to publish junk science like this and then takes well over a year to retract it?

Trust the science. Just don't put too much faith in the scientists or their journals.

Third World Villages Destroyed for the Climate

The Left will Kill you to save you. Or something. From Watts Up With That. Ugandan Villages Destroyed To Fight Climate Change

The £33m aid project was designed to help poor Ugandan farmers deal with the impact of climate change.

But the reality saw their crops and homes destroyed in an “inhuman” project that left them “on the brink of starvation”.

That will save them. Or maybe not.

Meanwhile Ugandan farmers seem to be doing pretty well “despite” climate change.

There is a link to the original article at The Telegraph.

Of course, the ones pushing this in the 1sst World are able to keep their hands clean and never pay a price, or even lose sleep, over this.

The UK Will Sacrifice Forests for Solar Power

Even the environmentalists think this is a bad idea. But Net Zero over all. Labour will chop down forests to make way for solar panels

Woodlands face being cleared to make way for solar farms and wind turbines under Labour’s latest plans to hit net zero targets.

Ministers are spearheading a legal change that would open up England’s forests to host massive new renewable energy projects.

If you page down a bit, there is a photo that shows one such "clearing."

But nothing can stand in the way of net zero, not even enviromental devastation. (Hat tip to MGUY Australia)

How Do You Drive an EV Without Electricity?

The short answer is, "You don't!" From the BBC we get the following story. Netherlands' renewables drive putting pressure on its power grid

It is the sign that, in one of the most-advanced economies in the world, something has gone wrong with the country's power supply.

The Netherlands has been an enthusiastic adopter of electric cars. It has the highest number of charging points per capita in Europe.

The BBC is clearly in favor of all this, and they do talk a bit about the chaos that is coming, but (I'm shocked) journalists don't really understand the physics or engineering of power distribution. They also seem to be fine with the fact that it will take the Netherlands years, and billions of Euros to fix this issue. If they can.

Antarctic Amundsen-Scott Station Records Coldest October in 44 Years

Media bias? What media bias? Antarctic Amundsen-Scott Station Sees Coldest October in 44 Years…Mainstream Media Silent!

Why would you report on something that doesn't support the narrative?

While the allegiance of the climate catastrophe continues to report on supposedly melting pole caps, the South Pole is freezing to a cold minimum that has not been measured since 1981. On the 15. October, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station registered an incredible minus 61.3 degrees Celsius – in the middle of the Antarctic spring, at a time when it was supposedly going to get warmer long ago.

For those of you who are Celsius challenged, that is minus 78.34 degrees Fahrenheit.

The original article is in German, though the online translation systems do a pretty good job with German. You can find that article at this link.

Is Consensus Science?

It seems that the climate doom industry is upset. The Consensus Strikes Back: Climate Empire Launches Legal Assault on EPA

Yesterday, [10 August] the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) stormed into federal court, clutching their pearls and a 40-page complaint, to demand that the EPA and Department of Energy be stopped from—brace yourself—listening to people who don’t think “climate change” is the meteorological equivalent of Armageddon.

They have to silence people who don't agree with them. Sounds like cancel culture.

The complaint is a parade of consensus incantations—“overwhelming scientific consensus,” “ocean of evidence,” “confirmed time and again”—interrupted only by ad hominem swipes at the Working Group’s résumés and reading lists. Curry, they note with horror, has criticized the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for “corruption.” Koonin once worked for BP. Spencer testified on behalf of a coal company. In other words, these people are contaminated by thoughtcrime.

William Teach at Pirate's Cove on the Climate Change Hysteria

First William Teach has a story about air conditioning. The Atlantic: Summers Are Like Winters, With Americans Stuck Inside

The folks at The Atlantic can't go outside because they like to stay in the air conditioning, and somehow that is my fault.

Well, I guess if you’re soft and weak like the barking moonbat Warmists at the Atlantic you avoid a little weather

I'm old, and I'm fat. I still manage to get outside during the summer, and do things like cut grass and trim hedges and other things like that. Do I like it as much as I used to? No. But I'm old and I'm fat, and I'm not willing to give up the privacy I have with my multiple acre yard.

Not to be left out, the Chicago Tribune also has to get into the act. Your Fault: Larger, More Damaging Hail To Happen More Often

Two Fires in Four Months at this EV Battery Facility

So, if a bunch of lithium-ion batteries catch fire, are they still "green technology?" West Michigan auto parts facility catches fire for second time in 4 months

Fire crews with the Holland Department of Public Safety responded to the facility, at 926 Waverly Road, shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9.

The auto parts manufacturing facility also caught fire overnight on March 30.

There are details at the article, but I recommend the StacheD Training video below. Patrick Durham is Fire Department captain in Michigan.

Electricity Rationing Coming to Europe and the UK

The Netherlands is up against rationing of electricity already, with Britain not far behind. Netherlands RATIONS electricity as country struggles to cope with turning away from gas as part of green policies - as expert warns Britain is also 'in trouble'

The Netherlands is rationing electricity as its overloaded power grid buckles under the pressure of rapid electrification and ambitious climate goals.

More than 11,900 businesses are stuck in a queue for access to the network, alongside public buildings including hospitals, schools and fire stations.

Thousands of new homes are also waiting to be connected, with some areas warned they may have to wait until the 2030s.

Belgium, France, and Germany will not escape much longer. European energy rationing is a dire warning for net zero Britain

Likewise, shortages are emerging in Belgium and France, and Germany may not be far behind. We should not kid ourselves that this is an issue restricted to the Netherlands or to continental Europe.

This is the MGUY Australia video Electricity RATIONING is coming to a town near YOU! MGUY Australia gets the whole

Electricity rationing is the inevitable, and completely predictable, consequence of extreme climate policies and the net zero by 2050 agenda. By imposing artificial and unachievable deadlines to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, before the market or the technology has evolved to cope with it, governments around the world are not only crippling their electricity infrastructure, they're crippling their economies.

NY Times and Climate Doom

From William Teach at Pirate's Cove: NY Times Goes All Satan And Fall Of Man For European Climate Doom

I wonder if NY Times Warmist Jason Horowitz even understands the meaning of Paradise Lost?

I doubt he read more than the CliffNotes version of Paradise Lost. William Teach gives you the introduction to Paradise Lost, in case you haven't read it.

I also wonder if he took a fossil fueled trip in order to “report from Barcelona, Spain”, considering he is stationed in Rome

Go see what the Europeans are so bent out of shape over.

For reference, here is a story from the BBC, on Monday, July 14th. Road closed as surface melts in hot weather

According to the Met Office, temperatures in Cannock reached highs of 29C (84F) on the weekend

So I'm not too worried about the Brits, anyway, even though they can't stop complaining about the heat. (84 would be great right now, and I'm only in Ohio.)

According to Accuweather, which is subject to change, as I type this the heatwave is going to see 90 degrees F on Wednesday in Barcelona, Spain. They are also suffering from Poor air quality, with high mold, extreme dust and dander, and an unhealthy level of pollution. Barcelona is where the NY Times Journalist went to wring his hands over the climate doom.

For comparison, as I type this (on Monday), Phoenix, Arizona is at 108F/42C, and Miami, Florida is cooling down for the evening, but expecting to see 89F/31.6C on Wednesday. Minneapolis, Minnesota is 90F/32C. Which are all seasonable for this time of year.

Spanish Battery Recycling Plant Fire

Google translate is needed because the English-language stories are missing some details. A fire at a battery plant in Azuqueca de Henares has led to the lockdown of several towns.

I looked at several English-language sources, but none of them mentioned the fact that Envirobat Spain deals with recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

A fire broke out this Friday at a lithium battery recycling plant located in the El Ródano industrial park in Azuqueca de Henares (Guadalajara), causing a thick column of smoke visible for tens of kilometers. The release of toxic gases has forced the activation of regional emergency plans in both Castilla-La Mancha and the Community of Madrid.

Because when lithium-ion batteries catch fire, which they do quite a lot, they become toxic hazards, both in terms of the gasses they emit, and residue they leave behind. So no, they are NOT environmentally friendly.

The fire broke out in the early afternoon [July 4th] and quickly mobilized emergency services . At 8:15 p.m., the Government of Castilla-La Mancha activated the Territorial Plan of Castilla-La Mancha in alert phase for the entire province of Guadalajara, due to the severity of the fire and the possibility of smoke affecting the nearby population.

Azuqueca de Henares is about 20 miles northeast of downtown Madrid.

The Environmental Impact of Electric Vehicles

So if an electric vehicle catches fire, sets other vehicles, electric and gas, on fire, is it still "zero emissions?" Burned-Out Car Carrier Sinks in Pacific Three Weeks After Fire Began

MV Morning Midas a car carrier en route from China to Mexico caught fire 3 weeks ago. It contained 3,000 vehicles, of which about 800 were EVs. It sank in approximately 5,000 meters of water, about 360 nautical miles southwest of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

And then there is the vessel that sank.

As a precaution, two salvage tugs containing pollution control equipment remain on site to monitor for any signs of pollution or debris. A specialized pollution response vessel is also en route to the location as an additional precaution. The vessel also reportedly had 350 metric tons of marine gas oil (MGO) and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) onboard.

But hey, go ahead and pretend that they are good the environment.

The Environmental Devastation Caused by EV Production

From the BBC: Race to mine metals for EV batteries threatens marine paradise

Nickel mining in Indonesia, in response to the demand from EV manufacturing, is destroying some of the most pristine environments in Indonesia.

Stark images, captured from a drone by environmental campaigners and shared with the BBC, appear to show how nickel mining has stripped forests and polluted waters in one of the most biodiverse marine habitats on Earth.

This is amazing, not because it is new news, but because it has been reported by the BBC.

This is MGUY Australia's video Electric cars are TERRIBLE for the environment

In the blinkered rush towards EVs and net zero, which is supposed to save the planet, the Greenies have been remarkably selective about what environmental issues they focus on. Their tunnel vision regarding climate change has meant that they have conveniently ignored the myriad other unforeseen consequences of this mad push for net zero. Many of which are far worse for the environment.

The video is about 8 minutes long.

The European Green Cult Is Suicidal

I believe in preserving the environment, but the way Europe is going about things looks insane to me. Green rules ‘stop Europe preparing for Russian invasion’

European countries have blamed EU environmental regulations for hindering their preparations for defending against a possible Russian invasion.

In a leaked letter obtained by The Telegraph, the nations’ defence ministers argued that the rules had stopped the expansion of military bases and prevented fighter jet pilots from training.

The United Kingdom is upping its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027. The continent is dragging its collective feet.

They said this was “mainly (but not exclusively) in the areas of procurement legislation, nature conservation and environmental protection, and more generally the administrative burden on defence organisations deriving from various EU legal acts”.

The letter was signed by the Dutch, Swedish, German, Belgian, Czech, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Finnish, Estonian and Danish governments.

I'm old enough to remember how the Europeans laughed at President Trump, during his first term, for insisting that they increase defense spending in the face of Russian aggression. I don't think their laughing so much now.

The commission had promised to ease regulations that could hinder the rearmament efforts, but has yet to do so in any significant way.

It would seem that they would rather live under Putin, than give up the control they've siezed of life in Europe. Bureaucracies NEVER yield power.

And yes, Putin is acting like he wants to take on NATO. Putin is building new force to take on Nato

Russia is building bases and expanding its military footprint near the Finnish border, in a sign of where its swollen army could be moved after a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Hat tip to William Teach at Pirate's Cove LOL: Europe Not Ready For Russian Invasion Due To Climate (scam) Rules.

Eco-zealotry is damning Europe. Putin might have an easier time rolling over the EU than Ukraine.

Chinese Solar Panel Inverters Contain Kill Switches

I'm shocked that the Chinese might be preparing to disrupt the electric grid. Hidden communications devices found in Chinese solar power inverters spark security alarm

What happens when you buy critical technology from a country that might not consider you to be a friend? Nothing good.

Undocumented communication equipment discovered in renewable energy infrastructure could allow remote grid disruption

While it is typical for there to be internet connections for firmware maintenance, this is something else entirely.

However, rogue communication devices not listed in product documents have been found in some Chinese solar power inverters by U.S. experts who strip down equipment hooked up to grids to check for security issues, the two people said.

Yeah, this won't come back to bite the West in the ass.

The Worst Idea in Green Power? Maybe Not the Worst

This sums it up quite nicely. From The Political Hat: Bird Slaughtering Death Ray To Be Shut Down

A powerful weapon of avian devastation, which for years now had slaughtered innocent birds, is likely going to be finally shut down.

Concentrating solar power with mirrors into intense heat to generate power. What could possibly go wrong? And yes, it does kill birds.

It can't compete economically with regular solar power, which doesn't incinerate birds.

Lawsuit Over Toxic Battery Fire in California

When is Green Technology not so green? Residents sue energy firms after toxic battery fire at Moss Landing - Los Angeles Times

After a massive lithium-ion battery storage site exploded into flames in Monterey County — spewing toxic gases into the air and scattering heavy metals over the ground — residents have filed a lawsuit accusing multiple energy companies of failing to maintain adequate fire safety at the facility.

Monterey County, which includes Monterey Bay, is about an hour drive south of San Jose.

Lithium Ion batteries make sense for our phones. They are relatively lightweight in comparison to the energy density. Battery installations that do no move, like power stations, or your home solar installation, do not need lightweight batteries since they never move. There are better choices.

Also lithium ion battery fires are a major problem, for several reasons. First there are the fires themselves.

Lithium-ion battery fires are notoriously hard to extinguish because the use of water can trigger a chemical reaction that causes more batteries to ignite. As these batteries burn, they release a toxic cocktail of gases, including hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds.

Hydrogen fluoride is a corrosive gas that can kill, after it burns you.

And aside from the fires, there are other problems.

In the fire’s aftermath, heavy metals have been measured at levels 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal in soil within a mile of the facility, and residents have reported experiencing skin, eye and respiratory irritation.

But don't worry, the people pushing this Green Technology insist that there is nothing to worry about.
