Day Three, LA Art Adventure

Image
Yesterday was a fun but exhausting day here in Los Angeles on our Excellent Art Adventure. I was really dragging by the time we got to LACMA, and wasn't able to appreciate it the way I'd like to. I need another week here. We had a great studio visit with Carol Es - will do a proper blog about it after I get home. Her work is even more impressive in person. Then we went to Culver City and Wilshire to visit lotsa galleries . . . Some were revelations, some were disappointing. As soon as I can find the links I'll tell you about my favorites. John took us to one of his favorite Japanese restaurants ( thanks John! ) where my bento box was so huge, I ended up carrying most of it around for the rest of the day and finishing it in the hotel room later. We met our friend Bernard at LACMA (he lives in LA) and traded more art gossip. We'll see him again today at MOCA. Yes, today, today is about to get underway . . . just watched the sunrise over the post office, from the Hotel lo...

Friday in Los Angeles

Drove down here with friends yesterday, with the express purpose of seeing as many galleries and art museums as possible. After arriving mid-day, we toured the downtown "Gallery Row" area. It's somewhat like SF's Tenderloin/Mission. Upper Playground/fifty24LA http://www.upperplayground.com/ has two small gallery areas with orignal art Tshirts, hats, etc. One gallery is photography & video, the other was "Paper Dolls", a delightful group show about female fashion Curated by M.I.S.S. http://www.missomnimedia.com/ Mostly small, well crafted, personal works, with understated humor. One of my favorites for the day. And they're right across the street from Babycakes - a cupcake cafe on cute overload. Seriously, though, these have to be the world's best vegan, gluten-free, no refined sugar chocolate cupcakes. (No really - they're good!) http://babycakesshop.com/ The other highlight for me was the Bert Green Gallery. http://bgfa.us/ Three good-s...

Figure Drawing

Image
I attended the (regular, weekly) figure drawing session at the Mission Cultural Center last week. Wow, was I rusty - no surprise, since it's been a few years since my last one. But it felt good to stretch those muscles, so I think I'll make it a regular habit again.

Welcome to the new decade!

I have a feeling this is going to be a good year. For one thing, we're starting out the year with everybody around here healthy, happy, and inspired (always a good foundation.) Secondly, I have two new bodies of work that will be ready to show this year (more about them later.) And more projects are waiting to occupy the studio, as soon as those two clear out of here. Next week I'm heading down to Los Angeles to see a lot of art, feel the energy, connect with some folks, and maybe meet some new ones. And that brings me to the final good auspice - a massive increase in personal connections, thanks to social networking software like Flickr , Facebook and Twitter . Suddenly, all the disparate parts of my life are meeting each other, combining or combusting but making new things happen. It's a great process for the creatively inclined. This site will just be used for occasional summaries or special projects. Use the links in the previous paragraph for the up-to-the-minute new...
