About
Mastery 2 builds on the knowledge and clinical proficiency gained in Mastery 1 with continued emphasis on skill development to manage a broad spectrum of cases and severities of obstructive sleep apnea. Lectures will develop a more in-depth understanding of all aspects of dental sleep medicine, including administrative strategies for practice growth. An in-person, two-day workshop will provide clinical chairside confidence and prepare students to submit two required oral appliance therapy cases on real patients.
Completion of Mastery 1 is required to participate in Mastery 2. After completing both courses, eligible dentists can apply for the ABDSM certification examination. To learn more about the ABDSM exam, click here.

Prerequisites
Successful completion of Mastery 1, including all clinical competency assignments and the Mastery 1 Quiz, is required to participate in Mastery 2. Additionally, those who register for Mastery 2 are required to carry professional liability coverage that includes coverage for training and educational activities sponsored by the AADSM.
Recorded Lectures
Mastery 2 includes pre-recorded lectures that are available on-demand in the AADSM Online Learning Center so you can access the lectures when it works best for you. Participants are strongly encouraged to complete the Mastery 2 recorded lectures before attending the in-person Mastery 2 Practical Workshop, however it is not required. The deadline to complete Mastery 2, including the Mastery 2 Practical Workshop and two patient cases, is as follows:

Clinical Competencies
Mastery 2 includes several clinical competency assignments that require patient interaction. These assignments are required to successfully complete Mastery 2. For an overview of the clinical competency assignments, click the button below.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the significant benefits of healthy sleep and the risks associated with inadequate or compromised sleep.
- Develop critical understanding of OSA pathophysiology and co-morbidities such as cardiovascular, metabolic and neurocognitive concerns.
- Explain the influence of confounding respiratory influences and possible remedies.
- Improve OAT outcomes by understanding maximum medical improvement (MMI) and exploring combinations of therapies
- Prepare patients for oral appliance wear and titration, monitoring signs, symptoms and side effects.
- Anticipate and manage side effects that could compromise treatment objectives.
- Incorporate protocols to maximize staff efficiency following a medical practice model, with an understanding of medical insurance coding and billing requirements.
- Clearly communicate device design to laboratories, avoiding costly mistakes, and consider benefits of digital technology in practice.
- Explore alternative and emerging therapies for SDB.
- Anticipate oral appliance efficacy for individual cases and consider combinations of therapies for best clinical outcomes.
- Confidently manage OA side effects and patient expectations
- Explain the etiology and prevalence of pediatric SDB, the differences with adult SDB and the efficacies of treatment options.
- Incorporate pediatric screening and referral protocols.
- Continue to build an understanding of the medical practice model with medical-legal considerations.
- Perfect an appropriate algorithm for patient management that begins with screening and ends with long-term follow-up.

The AADSM does not offer payment plans for the AADSM Mastery Program. Credit cards are charged for the full registration fee at the time of registration.
Attendance at the Mastery 2 Practical Workshop is required with registration for Mastery 2. This experiential, two-day workshop will take place at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry in downtown Chicago, IL.
Attendees will participate in small-group, roundtable discussions focused on challenging case presentations involving treatment planning, device selection and design, finding therapeutic position, side effect resolution and long-term patient management. Under the supervision and guidance of Mastery faculty, attendees will also participate in chairside exercises designed to apply their didactic learning from Mastery 1 and Mastery 2. Attendees will gain confidence in their clinical abilities and to provide optimal patient care. The oral appliances that will be used in clinic and for close inspection will include all common styles, materials, retention mechanisms and calibration strategies.
Following interactive demonstrations, attendees will be encouraged but not required to participate clinically in peer-to-peer comprehensive head/neck and oral examinations, full arch impressions and construction bite capture. All appropriate materials, equipment, scanners, instruments, and PPE to participate in the workshop will be provided by the AADSM. Oral appliances consisting of various materials, styles and design features will be manufactured and ready for small group delivery on Mastery faculty, all necessary supplies provided. Key learning objectives for delivery exercises include insertion considerations, adjustment techniques and patient coaching.
Recognizing that advanced clinical practice weighs heavily on patient history, differential diagnosis and decision making, attendees will treatment plan real patient cases including device design, calibration strategies and identification of treatment endpoints.
The Mastery 2 Practical Workshop includes in-kind donations from the following companies: Airway Management, Apnea Sciences, Dynaflex, EMA-Now, Good Sleep Company, Great Lakes Dental Technologies, Kettenbach, LeBlanc Dental Products, Inc., Max-Air Nose Cones, Modern Dental Laboratory, Myerson, LLC, Nexus Dental Systems, OADS, OASYS, Panthera, ProSomnus, Respire Medical – Whole You, Serena Sleep, and SomnoMed. The Mastery 2 Practical Workshop will feature up to nine tabletop exhibits. Workshop attendees will be provided the opportunity to interact with industry representatives and learn more about products and services.

I understand it is my choice to participate in the clinical skills taught, performed and/or demonstrated on course participants and faculty. Clinical skills include:
- performing a comprehensive examination focused on signs and symptoms of sleep-related breathing disorders and evaluating oral structures for compatibility with a mandibular advancement device.
- techniques for full arch digital and analog impression takings along with bite registration with a variety of bite gauges.
- strategies for delivery of an oral appliance designed for purposes of protruding and stabilizing the mandible.

- I hereby release the AADSM and their agents, representatives and assigns from any responsibility or liability for any injury, illness, reactions, or damages arising from my participation.
- I consent to be interviewed about my health conditions and have an exam and consultation as part of the Mastery 2 Practical Workshop, which will be presented before course participants and faculty.
- I understand that full participation in the Mastery 2 Practical Workshop requires that I consent to role-play as a patient for the purpose of a visual examination of my intraoral structures, manual palpation of my craniofacial muscles, measurements of my jaw movements, and use of bite registration material intraorally. I understand that if I choose not to participate in this manner, I am still required to observe other participants.
- I understand that I will NOT receive an oral appliance for my personal use after the Mastery 2 Practical Workshop.
- I certify that I have read the contents of this informed consent, am aware of the benefits or potential harms from my participation in the clinical skills given my training in dental sleep medicine and will comply with any applicable dental licensure laws and/or equivalent laws.
- I understand that it is my right to discontinue my participation in the clinical skills at any time. However, should I choose to do so, my attendance for the duration of the workshop in the form of observation is still required.
- I recognized that AADSM has advised me to review my professional liability coverage to make sure that it includes coverage for training and educational activities sponsored by the AADSM.

AADSM, as the course provider, and the course instructors will follow all applicable standards for patient consent and protection during the training. As a course participant, you should be aware of the ADA CERP standards (specifically Standard XIII. Patient Protection) that AADSM, the course instructors and you as a participant are expected to follow.
The AADSM is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. The AADSM designates the 2025 and 2026 AADSM Mastery Programs for the following number of continuing education credits.
