The NHS needs to catch up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"polaris__simple-grid--main\"><div class=\"polaris__simple-grid--body-content\"><div class=\"-article-content-container tbi-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government is soon to publish its first-ever Men&rsquo;s Health Strategy, in response to evidence that men in England face worse health outcomes than women men and are more reluctant to use certain <a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/life\/health\/nhs-labour-10-year-health-plan\/\">NHS<\/a> services than women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To support this strategy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/EOA_Cv2nAU7Xz6msQfmCQgTkK?domain=healthwatch.co.uk\">Healthwatch England<\/a>&nbsp;set out to understand men&rsquo;s attitudes towards healthcare. A key question for us was &ndash; where do men get healthcare information from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our new research shows that when looking for information on staying healthy, men most commonly turn to the NHS in one form or another for information, including the NHS website, leaflets and helplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/opinion\/can-we-really-trust-ai\/\">Can we really trust AI to tell the truth?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/employment\/ai-jobs-graduates-far-right-politics\/\">Is AI pushing jobless young graduates to the far right?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/opinion\/chatgpt-ai-universal-basic-income\/\">How ChatGPT and AI changed the conversation on universal basic income<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we also found that one in five men are now using social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube for information on staying healthy. Almost one in 10 say they use <a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/employment\/jobs-replaced-by-ai-risk\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) tools, such as Chat GPT. This is a higher proportion than for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, AI brings a range of opportunities to healthcare. It can provide more personalised advice, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Younger men and those from ethnic minority backgrounds are far more likely to seek health advice outside traditional NHS channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly a third (31%) of men aged 18 to 24 use social media for information on staying healthy. They don&rsquo;t know a person&rsquo;s medical history, they&rsquo;re not accountable and they&rsquo;re often designed to maximise engagement rather than accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reliance on them can therefore result in harm. There has been media coverage in recent months about TikTok influencers who have promoted unlicensed <a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/opinion\/mounjaro-weight-loss-jabs-nhs-wes-streeting\/\">weight-loss drugs<\/a> such as Retatrutide, fuelling a black-market trade in the UK. In the United States, a lawsuit has raised concerns about an AI chatbot that appeared to encourage a vulnerable teenager&rsquo;s suicide.<\/p><div class=\"-ad-wrapper polaris__focus-bg ad-mobile\"><div class=\"_ad--label\">Advertising helps fund Big Issue&rsquo;s mission to end poverty<\/div><div class=\"snack-ad-wrapper mpu-repeatable\"><div data-snack-repeater=\"snack_dex5\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many men, possibly including those that are reluctant to visit their GP, these platforms can seem like safe, anonymous spaces to seek advice. A dedicated men&rsquo;s health section on the NHS website, offering clear, accessible information about key conditions, screening programmes and symptoms to watch for should be a first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, one in five men aged 25 to 34 told us that they&rsquo;d be more likely to make lifestyle changes based on information from social media experts including content from influencers. The NHS&rsquo;s role should go further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By developing a stronger and more relatable presence on <a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.bigissue.com\/life\/health\/how-to-stop-social-media-brain-rot\/\">social media<\/a>, it can make sure accurate, evidence-based advice appears in the same feeds where misinformation spreads. Working with trusted public figures, sport organisations and community leaders could help make these messages more relevant and appealing.<\/p><div class=\"-ad-wrapper polaris__focus-bg ad-mobile\"><div class=\"_ad--label\">Advertising helps fund Big Issue&rsquo;s mission to end poverty<\/div><div class=\"snack-ad-wrapper mpu-repeatable\"><div data-snack-repeater=\"snack_dex5\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equally important is building men&rsquo;s digital health literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men want more information about how to stay healthy, but many lack the skills to judge what information is reliable. Resources and information that help people fact-check content, recognise genuine NHS information and spot misleading claims would give men the confidence to make safer choices about their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise of social media and AI tools need not be something to fear.
