  • DIRECTOR OF BRETHREN DISASTER MINISTRIES (remote)
  • The Church of the Brethren is seeking to fill a full-time salaried position of Director of Brethren Disaster Ministries (BDM). The Director of Brethren Disaster Ministries is part of the Brethren Disaster Ministries team and reports directly to the Executive Director of Service Ministries.

    Major responsibilities include providing oversight and administration of Brethren Disaster Ministries with a focus on the home rebuilding program. This includes identifying and opening new home rebuilding sites as necessary, managing long-term and weekly rebuilding volunteers and leading the training of volunteer leaders.

    Required skills and knowledge include strong interpersonal skills; ability to articulate, support and operate out of the vision, mission, and core values of the Church of the Brethren as defined by the Mission and Ministry Board, ability to uphold and support the basic beliefs and practices of the Church of the Brethren as determined by Annual conference, and ability to act within a multicultural and multigenerational team environment.

    Training or experience with making effective presentations and providing adult education, especially in conducting skill training workshops; managing staff and volunteers and in house construction and repair is required. Knowledge of International Building Codes is preferred.

    A Bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree in related field preferred.

    This position is remote and based at the Brethren Disaster Ministries Office, New Windsor, Maryland.

  • PROGRAM ASSISTANT FOR BDM –Children’s Disaster Services (New Windsor, Md.)

    The Church of the Brethren is seeking an individual to fill the full-time hourly position of Program Assistant for Brethren Disaster Ministries (BDM) – Children’s Disaster Services (CDS). The Program Assistant is part of the Brethren Disaster Ministries team and reports to the Associate Director of Children’s Disaster Services. This position is located at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, MD.

    The major responsibilities of this position are to support programming and administration of CDS. These activities include providing administrative, programming, and clerical support to the associate director of Children’s Disaster Services. This includes support of volunteers, volunteer training and response, and assistance with general administration of BDM.

    Skills and knowledge required:

    • Ability to articulate the importance of ministry for traumatized and stressed children.

    • Understanding of child development favorable.

    • Ability to operate with integrity and respect within and beyond the organization.

    • Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to effective interaction and communication.

    Experience:

    • At least two years of experience with Microsoft Office component applications, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

    • Experience with Raisers Edge software is helpful for this role.

    • Capability and willingness to learn new software applications.

    • Two years of office administration experience preferred.

    • Previous experience working with children or in the child development field preferred.

     

    Education: Associate degree or commensurate education, life, and work experience required.

  • Buildings and Grounds Assistant (Elgin, IL)

    The Church of the Brethren is seeking a Buildings and Grounds Assistant for the General Offices in Elgin, Illinois. This part-time, 20-hour weekly position and reports to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

    Perform custodial services for the General Offices. Provides support on services such as room set-up, mail, supplies, equipment, maintenance, warehouse operations and other duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

    Key performance accountabilities

    • Maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
    • Performs custodial services at the General Offices, at the direction of the Director of Buildings and Grounds (Cleaning building floors and restrooms by using the floor scrubber machine, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, etc.).
    • Sort all incoming mail to the General Offices, including incoming package deliveries.
    • Deliver mail and packages within the General Offices, on days the building is “open”, and staff are present.
    • Assist with room set-up, as directed by the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds or Executive Director of Organizational Resources and the General Secretary.
       

    Skills and knowledge required:

    • Able to relate with integrity and respect within and beyond the organization.
    • Knowledge and experience in building operation and facilities management.
    • Knowledge in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical helpful, but not required.
    • Able to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer.
    • Skilled in oral and written communication.
    • Work with minimal supervision.
       

    At least five years of Buildings and Grounds operations experience helpful but not required.

    High School diploma or equivalent required.

    This position is located at the Church of the Brethren General Offices in Elgin, Illinois.

  • Director of Finance, Atlantic Northeast District

    Part-Time Position: 15 hours per week

    The Atlantic Northeast District is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Director of Finance. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the financial stewardship and ministry operations of our district.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Planning & Oversight

    • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Stewardship Commission to develop the annual Ministry Investment Plan
    • Track and analyze District financial statistics
    • Conduct annual District financial reviews and quarterly staff ledger reviews
    • Oversee annual review of special funds

    Investment & Fund Management

    • Work with Eder Financial to oversee investments and investment fund policies
    • Serve on multiple Fund Committees including Barnabas, Seeds of Faith, Facilities Assistance Fund, and Helping Hands Benevolence Fund
    • Serve as Staff Liaison to Germantown Trust Board and Bucher Meeting House Committee

    Strategic Support

    • Partner with the District Stewardship Commission on various initiatives
    • Assist District Executive with legal matters related to District and Congregational properties
    • Support Leadership Development with Stewardship Education programs

    Meeting Commitments

    Regular participation in Stewardship Commission meetings, Fund Committee meetings, Germantown Trust Board, District Board, District Conference, and other meetings as needed.

    Additional Opportunities

  • District Executive Minister Positions, Middle Pennsylvania District

    Note: The Middle Pa District Executive Search Team is announcing new developments in their efforts to discern God’s will for leadership within the District.

    The District’s Coordinating Team has re-evaluated the financial package they are offering for successful candidate(s) and are now able to offer a more attractive package.     The Middle Pennsylvania District of the Church of the Brethren seeks a full-time district executive minister to serve its 53 congregations located in rural, small town and city settings. Middle PA District churches share a heritage that grounds them in a strong relationship with Jesus Christ, enlivened in the activity of the Holy Spirit. They seek to follow Jesus’ teachings and example, living in grateful response to God’s amazing grace, and sharing a cross-shaped love with a hurting world.

    The district executive minister will be expected to work both on location at the Middle PA District Office located in Huntingdon, PA and remotely as needed. Compensation for the DEM will be negotiated in reference to the denominationally recommended Salary and Benefits for District Executive Ministers. Travel is required both within and outside of the district.

    Responsibilities are outlined in the position description available upon request and will include the primary areas of:

    • Pastoral/Congregational Transitions
    • Pastoral Support
    • Leadership Development with respect to calling and credentialing of ministers
    • Consultations with congregations and throughout the district structure, and
    • Management and administration of district staff and oversight of district finances.

    These primary areas of responsibility serve to provide:

    • Direction, coordination, management, and leadership of the district ministries, as authorized by the District Conference and implemented by the District Coordinating team (District Board).
    • Work with the congregations in calling and credentialing ministers, and in the placement/call and evaluation of pastoral staff. Provide support and counsel for ministers and other church leaders, share and interpret program resources for congregations.
    • An important link between the congregations and the district and denomination by working collaboratively with the Council of District Executives, the Annual Conference, appropriate denominational entities and their staff.

    Qualifications/Experience:

    • Ordained through accredited program, minimum of Brethren Academy ACTS level training program; Master of Divinity preferred.
    • Personal skills in organization, administration, and communication.
    • Committed to the Church of the Brethren locally and denominationally and willing to work ecumenically.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills.
    • Pastoral experience.
