A tiny retreat is a chance to take a break from the day and, just for a moment, lay down all you are carrying. Retreat to a sacred space of beauty, scripture, and meditation. Be blessed.

Speak

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. appears on the cover of the April 25, 1968, issue of Messenger, the Church of the Brethren magazine. The issue was published after his assassination on April 4. The editors dedicated the inside front cover and the back cover to reflections on the meaning of King’s life, work, and witness for civil rights and for peace.

“I have told the glad news of deliverance
in the great congregation;

see, I have not restrained my lips,
as you know, O Lord.
I have not hidden your saving help within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.”

– Psalm 40:9-10

Activity

In many ways, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, work, and witness can be described by these verses from Psalm 40. On the Messenger cover he is shown speaking to “the great congregation” of the people of the world. How did he speak without restraint of the glad news of deliverance, faithfulness, salvation, and steadfast love? With his model before us today, how can we speak without restraint to share glad news of deliverance?
