History/Historical, Islam. a member of any of various non-Muslim communities to whom conquering Muslims offered protection and the right not to convert to Islam in exchange for surrender, loyalty, and the payment of annual tribute: a phenomenon lasting from the 7th century until its abolition by the Ottoman Empire in 1839.
