Wednesday 4 February is the World Cancer Day. Committee on Public Health will mark this important occasion already on the 2nd of February at it's committee meeting with an exchange of views with experts. Members of the SANT committee will debate actions already taken by the European Union and possible further actions in the fight against cancer.

On the 2nd of February, Neophytos Charalambides, Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus will present the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency in the field of public health. It will be followed by the discussion between the Members of SANT committee and the Minister.

On 27 January, Members of the SANT and ENVI committees jointly heard a presentation of the Commission on the proposal of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism and Union support for health emergency preparedness and response.

On 27 January, Members of Committee on Public Health held an exchange of views with Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, on Public Health Policy Frameworks and Implementation.

World Leprosy Day raises awareness about leprosy - a neglected tropical disease affecting over 120 countries, with more than 200,000 new cases each year. It is an infectious bacterial disease that can cause skin lesions and nerve damage and is transmitted through prolonged close contact with droplets from an untreated individual. The day highlights the need to reduce stigma and emphasizes that leprosy is a curable bacterial infection when properly treated.
