On Wednesday 15 July 2026, Mr Simon Harris, ECOFIN President, Tánaiste and Minister of Finance of Ireland appeared before ECON to present the priorities of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the area of economic and financial affairs.

On Wednesday 15 July, Dominique Laboureix, Chair of the Single Resolution Board, made his second appearance of 2026 in ECON and presented the Board’s annual report for 2025. The Commission is expected to publish its communication on the competitiveness of the banking sector shortly and the exchange of views was also an opportunity for MEPs to discuss with Mr Laboureix expectations and hopes for that document and for the subsequent legislative proposals.

Taxation

The ECON Committee is also responsible for tax matters and is assisted by a subcommittee on tax matters, for tax-related matters and particularly the fight against tax fraud, tax evasion and tax avoidance, as well as financial transparency for taxation purposes.
