BSPC Standing Committee meets in Neustadt in Holstein
The Standing Committee of the he Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference, which brings together national and regional parliaments as well as parliamentary organisations from across the Baltic Sea Region, met in Neustadt in Holstein on 17-18 May 2026.
MEP Sabrina Repp, whose constituency Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is one of the 16 entities that were represented at the Standing Committee, attended the gathering on behalf of the European Parliament's Delegation for Northern Cooperation (DEEA).
Considering current developments, the Standing Committee adopted a statement condemning hostile drone incursions into the airspace of democratic Baltic Sea states. The statement expresses solidarity with Finland, the Baltic States and Poland, which have faced repeated violations linked to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The Committee also called on governments in the region to strengthen air-defense cooperation, invest in surveillance capabilities, and ensure that civilian populations are protected and kept informed. The statement stresses the importance of parliamentary oversight in these efforts, reflecting the BSPC's role as a forum for democratic coordination and regional resilience.
The agenda further included discussions on strengthening cyber and information resilience, youth policy, sea pollution and maritime security in the Baltic Sea region. The programme also included a field visit to the Federal Police Maritime Inspection in Neustadt, highlighting the growing relevance of maritime security in the Baltic Sea region.
The recommendations for the BSPC's work will feed into the preparation of the resolution for the 35th Annual Conference that will take place in Lübeck from 30 August to 1 September 2026.
