De manier waarop het boek is geschreven doet enorm afbreuk aan de inhoud. De auteur springt van de hak op de tak; er zit geen structuur in en de tekst vormt geen samenhang. Daarnaast is de inhoud zeer abstract. Het begint al bij het definiëren van het begrip 'shadow'; het stevige fundament waarop dit boek gebouwd zou moeten zijn; maar dus niet is. Daarnaast gaat de schrijver ook niet echt in op hoe je je shadow zou kunnen 'civiliseren'. Het is alles behalve een praktisch boek.
Er zijn echter ook nieuwe inzichten en ideëen te vinden die op mij reflecteerden en geloofwaardig op mij overkwamen. Ik noem bijvoorbeeld de idee dat men tegenstellingen moet omzetten in paradoxen. Dit klinkt vaag op zichzelf en wordt ook niet duidelijker gemaakt met een voorbeeld, dat vind ik jammer. Het lijkt alsof de schrijver de behoefte aan voorbeelden aanvoelt, maar actief ontwijkt. Ik citeer:
'But if I sit with them [opposing wishes] they will fashion a solution that is agreeable to both; (...). I am tempted to describe such a solution, but that would be misleading since every such solution has to grow from the unique situation that one faces.' zie p. 86 en 87.
Het is leuk om dingen op te schrijven, maar als je de lezer nauwelijks duidelijk kunt maken waarover je het hebt en hoe je het in de praktijk kunt brengen heeft het schrijven van een boek weinig nut.
