I thought the beginning and up until the middle were the strongest points of this book.

Up to that point it introduced the idea of the steppenwolf, a metaphor for the jungian Shadow that then morphs into many shadows and many selfs, while simultaneously arguing that none of these selfs are the real one, that there is no main persona that works as the base of the psique, It ponders if maybe, we are many fractions built to react to different situations, and sometimes these fractions don't know how to coexist with themselves because of the world they are in. A world that makes them feel unfulfilled, empty or devoid of any meaning.

I really like how the book explained and first exemplified this concept by like I said, the middle point. The quotes, the changing between writing styles due to there being narrations of characters or notes and the exploration of the idea were super interesting to read. I say this even tho I completely disagree with the idea, or at least I don't think I function this way, not in the extreme it portrays, (I'm more keen to the idea that the self is an illusion) but I find it an interesting point of conversation and like what brings to the table, I also dislike the way the main character reacts to this reality and how the book while not making him a hero, doesn't make him a bad example like many good "bad example" fiction does. Anyways after this, the book doesn't really know what to do with itself, it tries to tell a narrative that first seems to try to be another example of the steppenwolf and maybe try to bring the argument to a crashendo, a thrilling, depressing or satisfactory resolution with the character. But instead it fumbles, characters just appear and become super relevant in the main character's life, the story seems to try to have a structure but then random events start to happen, we jump a lot and by the end you don't even know what its really happening or what it means.
I've searched for reviews and opinions and i don't seem to be alone here so I feel relieved that I'm not just not getting it.

So after some months of having finished this book I finally feel like writing something about it, because it was the biggest disappointment in my reading journey so far.

This book is a good destination with such a long and bad journey, and not even an immaculate ending at that.

Character arcs mostly end well and kaladin's one I think was nailed perfectly and the way it went made so much sense, the reveals were good mostly and lore explanations were mostly satisfying tho a bit too explanatory at times I felt, that said kaladin's arc tho good in nature and direction just becomes actually good in the end execution wise, and Adolin is the spotlight overall of this book.

My main problems with the book come with how much fluff there is, the humor is even worse than it's ever been (which I think wasn't awful in the first books just a bit too teenager in feeling), like cringe bad, the writing's drop in quality is something that was just impossible to ignore, some lines are meme worthy, and all the thematic exploration of things is literally spelled out like I was reading an instruction manual on the subject.
There were some characters that suddenly became oh so important after being in the foreground with no impact for 3-4 1000 page books and their big payoff is some very straightforward "no one loved me until you did" situation were because of this they can suddenly make a big plot thing that needed to happen, happen.
Then the structure is the worst it's been and it's been becoming worse since book 3 and it's very apparent.

So yeah the way it's written, it often doesn't give you context on things and you have to connect names and locations by interpreting each scene in succession with each other which I think is an amazing way of writing a massive world, it skips on a lot of the typical fluff of exposition and makes you have to pay even more attention than usual while bringing an interesting dynamic unique to Erikson's writing.
