Bu tarihsel oluş özelliği, dinlerin kendisini tanımladığı zamandışılıkla çelişir. Tarihsel olan, bir gün ortadan kalkabilir, çünkü bir başkasıyla yer değiştirebilir. Öyleyse her din, kendisini bu açmazdan kurtarmak üzere zamanı yeniden tanımlamak zorundadır. Mutlak olan ben, farklı olanı da belirleme çabasına girerek yarattığı bu gerilimi sürekli kılar ve tahakkümünü yeniden üretir. Dolayısıyla, her ne kadar zaman zaman aksi dile getirilse de, her üç dinin şeriatı (doğru yol, Tanrı buyruğu), başka geleneklerin değerlerine kendini kapatır; zamanın hâkimi olmak istediğinden, "öteki"ne hayat hakkı tanımaz.

Genel anlamda heterodoksinin zaman anlayışı ise döngüseldir. Çizgisel olarak bütün zamana yayılan, bu yüzden de dünyevî olan zamanla ilgilenmez. Kutsal zaman ile dünyevî zaman arasında bir noktada, bugünü esas alır. Heterodokside dün yoktur; her şey bugün içinde olup biter. Dolayısıyla yarın da bir anlam taşımaz. Tanrı inancı ise ortodoksların başvurduğu dolayımı (Tanrı’nın ayetler aracılığıyla öğrenilmesini) dışlar.

Heterodoks inanç sahipleri Tanrı’nın doğrudan, içte, kendinde, kendini bilmeyle algılanabilirliğini savunur. Bunun için bir araca, dile, dillere gerek yoktur. Bu yüzden de her üç dinin heterodoksileri, kendilerini tarihsel zamana bağlayan verili dil yerine, evrensel, insan için öncesiz ve sonrasız olduğuna inanılan iletişim kalıpları üzerine yoğunlaşmıştır. Matematik, resim, dans ve notaların evrenselliği vurgulanmış, etimolojik yapılarından soyutlanan harfler, bu amaç için kullanılan başlıca araçlar haline getirilmiştir.
