DNF @ 50% I'm so sorry, I just can't push myself to read this any further because I find that I'm uncaring of whatever happens next, what with the Manor and Rennedawn and whatever it is, and also I've forgotten half the stuff that happened in the last book (when I tell you I was shellshocked when The Villain said to Blade that they'd *done it* as though I haven't probably read about it in the previous book 😭😭😭) so I was actively forcing myself to read it, and I realized that just won't do because there are so many books I could be enjoying, rather than seeing Evie whine about finally having the means to defend herself, if only with that dark magic she used to find amusing on Trystan but somehow can't fathom when it flows out of her own fingertips. Talk about double standards. And on top of everything, why is no couple in this book willing to admit that they're dating despite having BEEN dating for four books at this point 😔

THIS DAMNED BOOK. I don't have much to say because those song lyrics are doing the work for me. That's it, every word perfectly captures how the romance in this book felt. Agonizing, tender and tentative. Though I've always preferred character-oriented books, this one included a perfect blend of plot and snot and tears (which always flow when I'm reading about any people, in any circumstances, sad or happy) and I had goosebumps throughout the entire last 20%. Perfectly written, not at all a filler book even though it was initially intended to be just a duology and has now been extended into a trilogy, and I took my time with this one to savor it, because Patrick and Nina haven't vacated my mind since I started the first book a few weeks ago, and I wanted to do them justice. How I'll wait for the third book, I have no clue, but we'll stay strong and totally not think of these characters every time 505 plays ✨🥲

I'm not gonna talk much about the characters because I don't want this review to be riddled with spoilers, but I have witnessed my very own opinions on every single character in this series morph and shift with every damn chapter, and indubitably I can't even tell you which ones I fully love and hate anymore (apart from our MCs, they're flawless and I will not tolerate any slander on them) because they're so complex and well-written that you can't quite predict whether they'll destroy the whole fucking town or go save a school of fish in a polluted pond lmao but I loved every page of it. 😌

Now for some quotes, wherein I tried my hardest to keep it appropriate but damn it you guys, it's not my fault the most fervent and heartfelt quotes are whispered during THOSE scenes 😭 and there was a mirror involved, come on now 🧐

“Think about this,” Patrick said. “We’re going to find the Seam, and I’m going to make you more powerful than anyone’s ever been.” Patrick wiped the cloth over the Scribbler’s ink. Her eyes lowered to his lips. Her breaths lengthened. “And you’ll watch ’em all cower at your feet. Every lord, every minister. You’ll go where you like, do what you like, and there won’t be a single person who takes it from you. No one will ever touch you again. And if they try, Nina…” He gripped her thigh with one hand, washed the ink away with the other. “I’ll pull them apart myself, piece by piece.”
“I would have, you know,” he said, leaning against the doorframe. She looked up at him. “Would have what?” “Traded myself if it meant keepin’ you from the whip.” Her eyes shone star-bright. “Why?” He considered his answer carefully. “I’ve seen you bleed enough,” he said, his eyes slipping to her arms. “Don’t think I could watch it again.”
“I’d agree with you, but I’ve found there’s still some good in it.” It was whisper-soft, and her eyes did not turn to Neveretti’s Cross or to the crumbling main street. They turned up to Patrick as though he were the map of stars. Patrick raised his eyebrows. “A gangster?” She shook her head, tilted it. “No, he’s just a man, I’m afraid.”
“He’d forfeit your life to win this war.” Theodore found his head bouncing off the glass window, the pain momentarily blinding him. “Wrong,” Patrick growled, the tendons in his hand flexing. “Never met a man who was wrong so often.”
“Do you want me to tell you what men see when they look at you?” he said, voice deepening. Here was the madness taking over again, flooding him, muting all sensible thought. He ran his thumb over her bottom lip, and she released a small gasp for him. He felt it resonate low in his abdomen, in his groin. “They see every sinful imaginin’ they’ve ever had, all at once,” he murmured. “Every beauty that existed before vanishes from memory, until their whole head is crowded with you. You in their hands, their beds, in every improper way that can be imagined. They see a woman they’d commit terrible crimes for. Something's wrong with me. Every time I read a book as sweet and wholesome and fulfilling as this one, I start ugly crying until I feel physically exhausted. So this story was no exception. While I discreetly try to blow my nose, here are some excerpts I loved. 💜

I also shockingly discovered that I don't necessarily despise Adam, despite knowing... everything. He did wonders for Juliette's confidence and he definitely loved her more than anything, I daresay almost as much as he loved James. That counted for something, and he was literally in love with her for YEARS (though that pales when you read the rest of the series, but that's information I'm not willing to disclose to somebody who's just reading this book for the first time ✨) and he was very, very nice to her. He pissed me off several times because OF COURSE HE DID, he's a man, but I kinda like him in this book only. Then he becomes cumbersome 🩵
Now onto Kenji. I did NOT love him when he was first introduced this time around 🥴 I forgot how mean he was regarding Juliette at first, what with calling her psycho chick and freak, and I decidedly did not remember how much he flirted with her. Literally in every sentence he uttered around her he was hitting on her, until he discovered that she was involved with Adam. I love that he immediately pulled back and only kept on play-flirting because that's literally HIS thing, flirting with everyone and flaunting that gorgeous physique of his. 🤭
And last but certainly not least, Juliette. You can see her develop and morph throughout this book, accepting who she is and viewing her powers as a weapon to wield in order to protect herself, among other things. I also must note here that Warner was obviously very very right in everything he'd said to her about the exhilarating rush of power she felt when she killed or hurt someone, how she kinda liked it, and the fact that she did at some point feel attracted to him, and once again I can't say why I noted that, because it's a massive spoiler, but it's just something that makes so much sense now that I'm rereading it. And back to Juliette— I think her arrival at Omega Point is a pivotal moment in the trajectory of her growth, because she suddenly realizes she doesn't have to be an outcast and she starts truly embracing herself. My favorite moment of hers was when she punched through that metal door, but breaking through concrete and shooting Warner were equally impressive. 😁

I don't even know why I enjoyed this book so much, but all I know is that it had me hooked from page one. Literally: I read the first sentence and I couldn't make myself stop reading. Ignoring the various issues regarding the writing and the nicknames, and ofc the general lack of communication (I'm looking at you Aiden), this was a good story. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.

There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

He only became marginally likable 80ish percent into the book, when you know what happened. The guy broke up with Naomi because he didn't want to get his heart broken????? Make that make sense.
Not a bad book overall, it just changed my perspective on knock knock jokes— I hate them extra now, because "did he make a lot of Knox Knox jokes?" 🥴]]> 4.13 2022

anytime exes persistently appear in books, I'm out. other than that, this was sweet, sad, and endearing, and I only got mad when I realized it was a love triangle, but it was otherwise enjoyable. 😌
