We don’t get to witness a root as it reaches out and absorbs from all around itself. But Piñata Theory by Alan Chazaro is evidence of this Mexican-American navigation—it is the bud and the strange blossom that doesn’t resist itself like Xicanos sometimes do. And in this way, it is like the serious ache a family joke leaves. It’s the men watching other men cry, lost gold teeth and the person that misses it, the thoughts loose like dogs on the street and how in their wildness, we must honor them. These poems reverb under the skin but not necessarily in the colonized body. The speaker in this collection knows better than to make their body fully responsible for the world. And yet, they know where they participate. They don’t “live with dust in [their] eyes,” or with unaccounted admiration for life. Piñata Theory is a record of layer, and speaks of us in a humor that is pure pocho-dimensional. Its truth is a deep wound and the “fuck it” that follows. And still, each poem seems to be written in a special wonder that gathers itself from many places inside the speaker’s one body, one root.

The introduction sets the unusual stage for the texts which follow as the author contemplates Georgia state founder James Oglethorpe's dreams for America's thirteenth colony and his possible reactions to conditions in the city of Savannah today. "What he did not," the author proposes, "and perhaps could not, envision was the extent to which increasing cultural diversity and individual genius would begin to alter our collective experience of history..."

In the title story, a well-known chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance contemplates what there is to gain or lose by editing a series of books on the American Civil War as it impacted, and still impacts, his hometown of Savannah. Without at first realizing it, a dream prepares him (almost) for a number of surprising results, including a flood of compassion for people he had never thought of as anything but enemies.

The city's more cosmopolitan aspect and how that plays into the narrator's emotional and intellectual experiences of it is examined through several stories. They include: "Cities of Lights and Shadows and Dreams," "A Brazilian Thanksgiving in Savannah," and "[Claude] Monet, [Luther E.] Vann, and [Kahlil] Gibran at the Telfair Museum of Art."

The humorous and yet serious tale of "Riding the Bus with Man-Boy and Shaniquananda: And Then Not" takes a look at how traditions and history sometimes clash with modern forms of communication in public spaces. In this case, how should a group of elderly African-American women respond to younger Blacks speaking loudly on cell phones about sexually intimate matters in their lives? "Savannah by the Twenty-first Century Numbers" is the most unusual of the book's narrative's as it combines a study of social realities with metaphysical analysis.

By maintaining a steady focus on the evolving dynamics of his hometown and immersing himself in its cultural currents, Aberjhani has been able to glean and share insights applicable to individuals and communities around the world. From the Website: "The mission of Sword of the Spirit Publishing is to distribute uplifting, inspirational, exhortational and challenging literature, both fiction and nonfiction, that will help non-believers understand and embrace Jesus and solidify the faith of the believers and aid them in the quest to live a Godly lifestyle. Or to put it in just a few words – the dissemination of truth."

But, one of their policies disturbs me greatly:
"We will not allow the use of the Lord's name in a profane way but, vulgar expressions, used commonly by most people will be permitted to heighten the reality of a story." The author's use of vulgar expressions did offend me, and very much. I suggest to Sword of the Spirit that their authors produce two versions of their books. One that has the vulgarity, and one that does not, so their wonderful books will not be closed to a prude like me. If I had read this statement first, I wouldn't have read this book.

I give the book 4 stars of 5. It would be a 5, hands down, if not for having to wade through the 'vulgar expressions'. I disagree with this policy of many Church outreach activities, that one has to use 'vulgar expressions' to reach youth. The author obviously does not use this kind of language/gestures, and it shows in the book.

The story begins with a tale of a farmer boy whose name is Alan Conner. He decides to move ‎from his hometown of Utah to Los Angeles, in order to change his social and financial status. To ‎his imagination, this move could rescue him from a boring and uneventful middle class life. He ‎is striving really hard towards a better life, he as an entire financial outlook on life and he see’s ‎happiness and wealth. Before he moves and leaves his family the book “Purgatory Train” is sent ‎to him. While on the way to Los Angeles to start his new life and his odyssey, he reads this ‎book. ‎

The book tells the stories of three characters. The first character which explains her own life in ‎the Purgatory Train is Amytis, the daughter of the king of Media which takes place thousands of ‎years prior to the death of Christ. This is a romance and portraits life from loves point of view.‎

The next story is of a priest names Antonio form the medieval ages. He explains life from ‎religious point of view and tells the role of religion in people’s life and how it could be placed as ‎a toll in their hands.‎

And the third story is about a girl names salma who lives in Algeria and tells a summary of ‎World War II and beginnings of the Algerian revolution. She explains life in the form of war, ‎politics and how revolutions are shaped.‎

All characters have one thing in common and have a message for Al Conner, but he does not ‎care about the messages the book conveys which is “history is full of mistakes that we continue ‎to repeat” and finally he has a similar destiny of the characters and becomes a passenger on the ‎Purgatory Train and one of the characters of the book, and the book is sent to another ‎individual.‎

This novel a totally new idea which studies humans from a different angles and how people ‎although red about the past, make the same mistakes that have been repeated throughout ‎history. As human mistakes are endless, so are the passengers of Purgatory Train and are finally ‎added to the end of this book.‎
